Book A Letter Book Selected with an Introduction on the History and Art of Letter Writing Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Letter Book Selected with an Introduction on the History and Art of Letter Writing Classic Reprint written by George Saintsbury and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-28 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Letter Book, Selected With an Introduction, on the History and Art of Letter-Writing When my publishers were good enough to propose that I should undertake this book, they were also good enough to suggest that the Introduction should be of a character somewhat different from that of a school-anthology, and should attempt to deal with the Art of Letter-writing, and the nature of the Letter, as such. I formed a plan accordingly, by which the letters, and their separate Prefatory Notes, might be as it were illustrations to the Introduction, which was intended in turn to be a guide to them. Having done this with a proper Pourvu que Dieu lui prete vie referring to both book and author, I thought it well to look up next what had been done in the way before me, at least to the extent of what the London Library could provide me in circumstances of enforced abstinence from the Museum and from "Bodiey." From its catalogue I selected a curious eighteenth-century Art of Letter Writing, and four nineteenth and earliest twentieth century books - Roberts's History of Letter Writing (1843) with Pickering's ever-beloved title-page and his beautiful clear print; the Litterature Epistolaire of Barbey d'Aure-villy - a critic never to be neglected though always to be consulted with eyes wide open and brain alert; finally, two Essays in Dr. Jessopp's Studies by a Recluse and in the Men and Letters of Mr. Herbert Paul, once a very frequent associate of mine. This book was released on 2017-01-13 with total page 728 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Letter-Writing, From the Earliest Period to the Fifth Century On these and other like evidences of fraud, Dr. Bentley has spared neither wit nor learning. His style of ridicule, as it is entirely his own, so is it above competition for scholastic humour and controversial raillery. His finishing topic is the long oblivion in which the letters must have reposed between the time of their composmon and the date of their discovery - a thousand years; covering a period which may be regarded as the greatest and longest reign of learning that the world has seen: in all which time these famous letters were never heard of. They first came to notice, says Dr. Bentley, in the dusk and twilight which preceded a long night of ignorance. During this interval various writers tell us things of Pha laris which are entirely at variance with the supposed letters. There was also within that period frequent controversy re specting the bull of Phalaris. Timaeus, the Sicilian historian, who wrote in the 128th Olympiad, treats the whole as a fiction, notwithstanding all that had been said of it by historians and poets. He, therefore, could have heard nothing of the letters, br, if he had heard of them, he passed them by in silent contempt. But it is still a stronger fact, that Poly bins and Diodorus, who both endeavour to refute Timaeus, and establish the story of the bull, do neither of them call these letters to their aid, which, had they been in existence, and their existence known, would have furnished them with a decisive argument; and one of these writers was a Sicilian. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Specimens of Letter-Writing The letters in this volume have been chosen primarily with a view to serving the needs of college students in English composition. They are intended to provide for such students illustrations of the art of letter-writing in their own tongue, from the earliest published examples of that art to those of the present time. The opportunity afforded by the letter for the teaching of all forms of discourse, and the necessity of offering instruction in. letter forms and practice in letter-writing, are each year more clearly recognized, but the practical impossibility of obtaining, for large classes, examples of good letters, when separate collections of various authors must be used, has made the teaching of this subject very difficult. Book Letter writing Manuals and Instruction from Antiquity to the Present

Download or read book Letter writing Manuals and Instruction from Antiquity to the Present written by Carol Poster and published by Univ of South Carolina Press. This book was released on 2007 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Once nearly as ubiquitous as dictionaries and cookbooks are today, letter-writing manuals and their predecessors served to instruct individuals not only on the art of letter composition but also, in effect, on personal conduct. Poster and Mitchell contend that the study of letter-writing theory, which bridges rhetorical theory and grammatical studies, represents an emerging discipline in need of definition. In this volume, they gather the contributions of eleven experts to sketch the contours of epistolary theory and collect the historic and bibliographic materials - from Isocrates to email - that form the basis for its study.

Book Letters and Letter Writing

Download or read book Letters and Letter Writing written by Charity Dye and published by . This book was released on 2015-09-27 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters and Letter Writing: As Means to the Study and Practice of English Composition This book has been prepared in the belief that there is a place for the emphasis of heretofore undeveloped possibilities in composition writing, and that contributions yet to be made to the teaching of English will consist of chapters on single topics thoroughly treated, rather than of books covering the whole subject and containing a re-statement of what has already been so well and so satisfactorily said. The specimen letters in Part I commend themselves by their own value; many of them have not before been given to the general public; some of them are old and very well known; all of them are precious. The annotated list of letters at the end of this part calls attention to many letters not given in the text. The work in Part II aims to show what practical use can be made of the letters in Part I, as models for composition through letter-writing, and to illustrate the adequacy of the epistolary forms for securing ease and fluency in written expression. It further aims to show that the average school situation through its studies, through the experiences of its student life, and through the larger social life surrounding it, is rich in genuine motives for letters.
