Book Letters to My White Male Friends

Download or read book Letters to My White Male Friends written by Dax-Devlon Ross and published by St. Martin's Press. This book was released on 2021-06-15 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Letters to My White Male Friends, Dax-Devlon Ross speaks directly to the millions of middle-aged white men who are suddenly awakening to race and racism. White men are finally realizing that simply not being racist isn’t enough to end racism. These men want deeper insight not only into how racism has harmed Black people, but, for the first time, into how it has harmed them. They are beginning to see that racism warps us all. Letters to My White Male Friends promises to help men who have said they are committed to change and to develop the capacity to see, feel and sustain that commitment so they can help secure racial justice for us all. Ross helps readers understand what it meant to be America’s first generation raised after the civil rights era. He explains how we were all educated with colorblind narratives and symbols that typically, albeit implicitly, privileged whiteness and denigrated Blackness. He provides the context and color of his own experiences in white schools so that white men can revisit moments in their lives where racism was in the room even when they didn’t see it enter. Ross shows how learning to see the harm that racism did to him, and forgiving himself, gave him the empathy to see the harm it does to white people as well. Ultimately, Ross offers white men direction so that they can take just action in their workplace, community, family, and, most importantly, in themselves, especially in the future when race is no longer in the spotlight.

Book Always Rachel

Download or read book Always Rachel written by Rachel Carson and published by Open Road Media. This book was released on 2022-03-08 with total page 857 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These letters between the pioneering environmentalist and her beloved friend reveal “a vibrant, caring woman behind the scientist” (Los Angeles Times). “Rachel Carson, author of The Silent Spring, has been celebrated as the pioneer of the modern environmental movement. Although she wrote no autobiography, she did leave letters, and those she exchanged—sometimes daily—with Dorothy Freeman, some 750 of which are collected here, are perhaps more satisfying than an account of her own life. In 1953, Carson became Freeman's summer neighbor on Southport Island, ME. The two discovered a shared love for the natural world—their descriptions of the arrival of spring or the song of a hermit thrush are lyrical—but their friendship quickly blossomed, as each realized she had found in the other a kindred spirit. To read this collection is like eavesdropping on an extended conversation that mixes the mundane events of the two women's family lives with details of Carson’s research and writing and, later, her breast cancer. . . . Few who read these letters will forget these remarkable women and their even more remarkable bond.” —Publishers Weekly “Darting, fresh, sensuous, pleasingly elliptical at times, these letters also serve to tether the increasingly deified Carson firmly to earth—just where she’d want to be.” —Kirkus Reviews (starred review) “It is not often that a collection of letters reveals character, emotional depth, personality, indeed intellect and talent, as well as a full biography might; these letters do all that.” —The New York Times Book Review “Provides insight into the creative process and a look into the daily lives of two intelligent, perceptive women whose family responsibilities were, at times, almost crushing.” —Library Journal “Dotted with vivid observations of the natural world and perceptive commentary on friendship, family, fame, and life itself, Always, Rachel will appeal to readers interested in biography and women’s studies as well as those drawn to nature writing and the history of the environmental movement.” —Booklist Online

Book Advice to a Young Woman at Service

Download or read book Advice to a Young Woman at Service written by Sarah Savage and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2019-02-11 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Advice to a Young Woman at Service: In a Letter From a Friend When I first heard that you had come to town, in order to go to service, I was exceedingly anxious for you. For several nights my sleep was disturbed, by thinking of the temptations to which you were expos ed among strangers in a great city. Your sister call ed yesterday, on her way home, and told me that you -had got into a respectable tamily. This good news relieved my mind very much; but still my-thoughts dwell upon the trials that every day will bring with it; for'you have left your native village, your pious parents, your snug and quiet home, and have placed yourself in a situation where every thing is new: you will therefore have other temptations to resist, and other exertions to make, than have ever been requir ed of you before. M y age and long experience, and especially my friendship for your mother, entitle me to some of your regard. I know that your disposition is good, and that you are ready to listen to advice. I have therefore determined, as I cannot conveniently come to you, to write you a letter; it will be a long one, and will cost me a good deal of pains, for I do not often write letters. I shall not expect you to read and destroy it, nor to lay it away in a drawer where it will not be seen; but keep it where you may fre quently look at its contents, and always remember that it was written by one who has lived many years, and experienced many changes, and can 'now say in her old age, that she has never been so happy as when she most nearly conformed to the rules which she now gives to you.
