Book excerpt: Yet there is in Dugald Dalgetty's professional ethic, his blundering Latin, his loving care of his horse, and his own self-absorption, more genuine humanity than in the political and religious principles of Royalists and Covenanters alike. And the picture which emerges is not of violence imported into Scotland from Germany but of a country destroyed by uncompromising religious hatred, political bigotry, tribal feud and personal enmity.

The men go on a physical and emotional journey that will put their loyalty to the test. Allan M'Aulay and Earl of Menteith are royalists in favor of Montrose. Allan has a personal vendetta against the MacEagh clan, who previously brought harm and death to his family. Both Allan and Menteith are in love with Annot Lyle, a young woman who grew up as an orphan. She has no memory of her parents or life prior to being captured as a child. When Annot’s parentage is revealed, the stakes of love and war come to ahead. A Legend of Montrose is a fascinating novel that dives into the passion behind the politics. Sir Walter Scott delivers action, adventure, humor and romance in one compelling narrative. It’s an engaging tale led by bold characters and Scott’s signature prose. With an eye-catching new cover, and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of A Legend of Montrose is both modern and readable.

Although he was an advocate and legal administrator by profession, Scott is most famous for his great literary works and activities in the Royal Highland Society. Book excerpt: It was during the period of that great and bloody Civil War which agitated Britain during the seventeenth century, that our tale has its commencement. Scotland had as yet remained free from the ravages of intestine war, although its inhabitants were much divided in political opinions; and many of them, tired of the control of the Estates of Parliament, and disapproving of the bold measure which they had adopted, by sending into England a large army to the assistance of the Parliament, were determined on their part to embrace the earliest opportunity of declaring for the King, and making such a diversion as should at least compel the recall of General Leslie's army out of England, if it did not recover a great part of Scotland to the King's allegiance. This plan was chiefly adopted by the northern nobility, who had resisted with great obstinacy the adoption of the Solemn League and Covenant, and by many of the chiefs of the Highland clans, who conceived their interest and authority to be connected with royalty, who had, besides, a decided aversion to the Presbyterian form of religion, and who, finally, were in that half savage state of society, in which war is always more welcome than peace.

Book excerpt: A Legend of Montrose By Walter Scott Against the background of Montrose's campaign of 1644-5, this spirited novel centres on one of Scott's most memorable creations - Sir Dugald Dalgetty of Drumthwacket. This hard-headed Aberdonian contrasts tellingly with the weird and passionate Highland feud in which he becomes perilously entangled, as the narrative moves from Dalgetty's unflinching encounter with the Duke of Argyll, to his dramatic escape from Inveraray Castle, to the battle of Inverlochy. Book excerpt: Notwithstanding the proverbial epicurism of the English, --proverbial, that is to say, in Scotland at the period, --the English visitors made no figure whatever at the entertainment, compared with the portentous voracity of Captain Dalgetty, although that gallant soldier had already displayed much steadiness and pertinacity in his attack upon the lighter refreshment set before them at their entrance, by way of forlorn hope
