In this volume, a range of voices address the issue of dance preservation through memory, artistic choice, interpretation, imagery and notation, as well as looking at relevant archives, legal structures, documentation and artefacts. The intertwining of dance preservation and creativity is a core theme discussed throughout this text, pointing to the essential continuity of dance history and dance innovation. The demands of preservation stretch across time, geographies, institutions and interpersonal connections, and this book focuses on the fascinating web that supports the fragile yet urgent effort to sustain our dancing heritage. The articles in this book were originally published in the journal Dance Chronicle: Studies in Dance and the Related Arts.

Book excerpt: My Uncle Caleb I was just five or six years old. The last memory I have of him at our house was the only time I remember him with two legs. After that, we got news he had been shot by a man he thought was a friend. Shot at close range through his knee and half of his left thigh. Gangrene set in and took a long time to heal. He was in the hospital for quite some time. Dad brought him to our home with one leg and a crutch. He had to carry him across the high river to keep his cast and crutch dry. For the next few years we kids, who were older, helped take care of him. We would take the train to stay with him and Grandma for two or three weeks at a time. We would work the fields and river banks. Uncle couldn't get a job, so he started his own business making fishnets to sell to neighbors and keep himself busy. He would set traps in the winter to capture animals for skins and sell them to a Louisville fur company. Sometimes I would go to the woods with him. Those woods were full of all kinds of fur creatures. Uncle would tell me how he owned land up on the mountain, and one day he was going to cut trees from his property and have a houseboat made from the wood. Many years passed. I lived in Ohio and would take trips to visit my hometown when I could. I had heard Uncle Caleb had built his houseboat, so on one trip, I ventured to find Uncle Caleb's houseboat nestled under the river bridge. Boy, was he surprised when I knocked on his door. We had a wonderful visit--my last one. Later I went to his funeral on the mountain, where the trees that made his home were cut from. I am so glad I got that unplanned wonderful visit.

Historic preservation is the most recent arrival in the collection of built environment disciplines and therefore lacks the pedagogical depth and breadth found in allied endeavors such as architecture and planning. As the first degree programs in preservation only date to the 1970s and the first doctoral programs to the 1990s, new faculty are confronted with pedagogical challenges that are unique to this relatively nascent field. Based on a conference that included educators from around the world, Barry L. Stiefel and Jeremy C. Wells now present a collection that seeks to address fundamental issues of preservation pedagogy, outcome-based education and assessment, and global issues of authenticity and significance in historic preservation. The editors argue that the subject of the analysis has shifted from, "What is the best way to fix a historic building?" to, "What are the best ways for teaching people how to preserve historic properties (and why) according to the various standards that have been established?" Yet there is a concurrent and strong tradition of a God who actively hides. The two traditions have led to a tension between a God who is simultaneously accessible to humanity and yet inaccessible, a God who is both immanent and transcendent, present and absent. Western Gnostic, esoteric, and mystical thinking capitalizes on the hidden and hiding God. He becomes the hallmark of the mystics, Gnostics, sages, and artists who attempt to make accessible to humans the God who is secreted away. 'Histories of the Hidden God' explores this tradition from antiquity to today.
