Book excerpt: The purpose of A Legacy of Wisdom is to enrich the lives of Christian women by enabling them to gain spiritual wisdom and encouragement from the examples of biblical women who touched the lives of the great biblical men of God as well as the Lord Jesus Christ. The Christian women featured in this book are excellent examples of faith and character. As partners to men like Abraham, Jacob, Moses, Samuel, King David, King Solomon, the Apostle Paul, and our great Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, they were real women who left a legacy of faith. They showed us how the presence of God guided their everyday lives. Understanding the partnership each of these women had with God and with the great men featured in this guidebook will enhance your everyday life as you deal with decision-making, joy, sorrow, your personal walk with God, and everyday family life. Through the lives of these women, God provided us with valuable examples of good and bad decisions that produced good and bad consequences. Using A Legacy of Wisdom as a guide, women can learn from the examples set by these inspiring women and apply those lessons learned to develop a stronger relationship with Jesus Christ and live righteously.

Book excerpt: A myth-shattering view of the Islamic world's myriad scientific innovations and the role they played in sparking the European Renaissance. Many of the innovations that we think of as hallmarks of Western science had their roots in the Arab world of the middle ages, a period when much of Western Christendom lay in intellectual darkness. Jim al- Khalili, a leading British-Iraqi physicist, resurrects this lost chapter of history, and given current East-West tensions, his book could not be timelier. With transporting detail, al-Khalili places readers in the hothouses of the Arabic Enlightenment, shows how they led to Europe's cultural awakening, and poses the question: Why did the Islamic world enter its own dark age after such a dazzling flowering?

Book Throne of Wisdom

  • Author : Ilene H. Forsyth
  • Publisher : Princeton University Press
  • Release : 2019-01-29
  • ISBN : 0691657165

Download or read book Throne of Wisdom written by Ilene H. Forsyth and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2019-01-29 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The wooden statue of the Mother and Child enthroned, known as sedes sapientiae, the Seat or Throne of Wisdom, reached the brilliant culmination of its development as a genre of religious sculpture in the twelfth century. As a visible expression of the mystery of Incarnation, its iconography dated back to the early church. Translated by the Romanesque sculptor into a fully plastic, freestanding form, its style conveys convincingly the medieval vision of humanity and divinity interfused. The recent cleaning and restoration of a number of these wood-carved figures of the Madonna in Majesty has now made possible a full appraisal of the genre. Mrs. Forsyth's discussion examines the character, function, iconography, and history of the statues; distinguishes types and regional styles; considers their role within the broader context of medieval art; and assesses their artistic merit. Her register of principal examples includes 110 sculptures dating from twelfth century France, some of which have never been published before. 192 illustrations accompany the text. Ilene H. Forsyth is Associate Professor in the Department of the History of Art, at the University of Michigan. Originally published in 1972. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. This is a book to keep by your bedside and return to often.”—Amy Dickinson, nationally syndicated advice columnist "Ask Amy" More than one thousand extraordinary Americans share their stories and the wisdom they have gained on living, loving, and finding happiness. After a chance encounter with an extraordinary ninety-year-old woman, renowned gerontologist Karl Pillemer began to wonder what older people know about life that the rest of us don't. His quest led him to interview more than one thousand Americans over the age of sixty-five to seek their counsel on all the big issues- children, marriage, money, career, aging. Their moving stories and uncompromisingly honest answers often surprised him. And he found that he consistently heard advice that pointed to these thirty lessons for living. Here he weaves their personal recollections of difficulties overcome and lives well lived into a timeless book filled with the hard-won advice these older Americans wish someone had given them when they were young. Book The Wisdom of Generations

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Wisdom of Generations, the sixth book in the Language of Conscience Evolution series, exposes a method of thinking that already has the world's greatest influencers, policy makers, and leaders applauding because the book touches the very heart of cultural existence at every level at home, in the community, in the country, and across the globe. The book focuses on many of the issues our world, and each one of us as an individual, face today. It reveals how economics and politics often serve self-interests, however culture includes values-based decision making. These ideas present what a world-renown author calls Enlightened Conservatism an appreciation for the free-market system guarded by values-based self-regulation. Through thought-provoking dialogue, The Wisdom of Generations analyses some uniquely specific cleavage points and decisions that ultimately changed history, and it challenges the reader to recognize similar points of current opportunity."
