Book excerpt: Excerpt from Exhibition of Illuminated Manuscripts Nevertheless the skill of hand and power of design which are seen to such advantage in the English books of the ninth to the twelfth century, which comprise the majority in Case A, Show no falling off in Case B, which contains an incomparable series of Psalters, mainly of the thirteenth century, from Canterbury, York, St. Albans, Peterborough, Salisbury, and other great monastic centres. To continue the survey of the English manuscripts in this exhibition, Case C contains the earliest known Sarum Book of Hours (58) side by side with a fine Psalter (59) partly decorated by the same illuminator, W. De Brailes. In Case D are two more kindred books, an East Anglian Psalter (64) and a Missal of great splendour partly decorated by the same unknown hand. In Case E are the Gorleston and St. Omer Psalters (67 two justly celebrated examples of the East Anglian school of the beginning of the fourteenth century, as well as a book of absorbing interest to the student of art, of heraldry, and of mediaeval lore written and illuminated in 1327 for Edward III. In Case F we have again two Psalters richly illuminated by the same anonymous artist, the one (72) for the use of John of Gaunt, the other (73) for that of his kinsman Humphrey, Earl of Hereford, the last male representative of the great house of Bohun. In Case G are notable series of English Bestiaries and Apocalypses. In Cases H and I are some fine Bibles, including a volume of the famous Winchester Bible of the twelfth century. The English books end in Case L, and include the Psalter of Eleanor de Bohun, Duchess of Gloucester, elder daughter of the above-named Humphrey; the Psalter of Henry Beauchamp, Duke of Warwick, side by side with a smaller book of the same style, which probably belonged to his wife, and afterwards to Elizabeth, Queen of Henry VII; and finally a remarkably beautiful volume written and illustrated by'thomas Chaundler, Chancellor of the University of Oxford. The notes are numerous and copious, but I trust they will commend themselves as not of the kind that paralyse the student's own mental activity by superseding the necessity for it; but rather as stimulating it by presenting suitable material in a workable form, and furnishing guidance in such a way as to lead to future independence. The material has of course been supplied in the first place by the text itself. This has been to a small extent supplemented, but chiefly elucidated and illustrated, by matter drawn from sources many of them inaccessible to the English reader. A not inconsiderable element may lay some claim to origi nality, and perhaps this will be the most valuable part of the book to the real student, because treating from the objective standpoint of the foreigner, specially of the Englishman, matters of idiomatic difficulty upon which only scattered hints are to be found in sources English or German. I may refer particularly to the notes on the particles, on the exact force, as felt in the original, of words like erst, z'ibrzlgms, vol lends, &c., and of certain familiar but peculiar modes of con ception and expression which are too completely ingrained in the consciousness of a native for him easily to make them the objects of analysis or of explanation to others.
