This book was released on 2003-05 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The tragedy of King Lear is transformed and taken to a different level in the title work of this collection of three shorter works by the great Russian classical writer Ivan Sergeevich Turgenev (1818-1883). Harlov, the "Lear," and in particular his daughters are vivid and lifelike; indeed, Turgenev has a penchant for portraying sympathetic profoundly spiritual women. A LEAR OF THE STEPPES AND OTHER STORIES also contains "Acia" and "Faust."

M Village, 6th June 1850. I HAVE been here for three days, my dear fellow, and, as I promised, I take up my pen to write to you. It has been drizzling with fine rain ever since the morning; I can't go out; and I want a little chat with you, too. Here I am again in my old home, where--it's a dreadful thing to say--I have not been for nine long years. Really, as you may fancy, I have become quite a different man. Yes, utterly different, indeed; do you remember, in the drawing-room, the little tarnished looking-glass of my great-grandmother's, with the queer little curly scrolls in the corners--you always used to be speculating on what it had seen a hundred years ago--directly I arrived, I went up to it, and I could not help feeling disconcerted. I suddenly saw how old and changed I had become in these last years. But I am not alone in that respect. My little house, which was old and tottering long ago, will hardly hold together now, it is all on the slant, and seems sunk into the ground. My dear Vassilievna, the housekeeper (you can't have forgotten her; she used to regale you with such capital jam), is quite shrivelled up and bent; when she saw me, she could not call out, and did not start crying, but only moaned and choked, sank helplessly into a chair, and waved her hand. Old Terenty has some spirit left in him still; he holds himself up as much as ever, and turns out his feet as he walks. He still wears the same yellow nankeen breeches, and the same creaking goatskin slippers, with high heels and ribbons, which touched you so much sometimes, . . . but, mercy on us --how the breeches flap abo...

His novel Fathers and Sons is regarded as one of the major works of 19thcentury fiction. After the standard schooling for a child of a gentleman's family, he studied for one year at the University of Moscow and then moved to the University of St Petersburg, focusing on the classics, Russian literature and philology. Turgenev was impressed with German Central-European society, and believed that Russia could best improve itself by imitating the West. Like many of his educated contemporaries, he was particularly opposed to serfdom. He first made his name with A Sportsman's Sketches, also known as Sketches From a Hunter's Album; or, Notes of a Hunter. He wrote several short novels like The Diary of a Superfluous Man, Faust and The Lull. In them Turgenev expressed the anxieties and hopes of Russians of his generation. Amongst his other works are Liza: A Nest of Nobles, The Jew and Other Stories, On the Eve, A Reckless Character and Other Stories, The Torrents of Spring, and The Rendezvous.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Lear of the Steppes: And Other Stories This sense of inevitability and of the mystery of life which Turgenev gives us in A Lear of t/ze Steppes is the highest demand we can make from art. Add, the last story in the present volume, though it gives us a sense of mystery, is not inevitable: the end is faked to suit the artist's purpose, and thus, as in other ways, it is far inferior to Lear. Faust, the second story, has consummate charm in its strange atmosphere of the supernatural ming ling with things earthly, but it is not, as is Lear, life seen from the surface to the revealed depths it is a revelation of the strange forces in life, presented beautifully; but it is rather an idea, a problem to be worked out by certain characters, than a piece of life inevitable and growing. When an artist creates in us the sense of inevitability, then his work is at its highest, and is obeying nature's law of growth, unfolding from out itself as inevitably as a tree or a flower or a human being unfolds from out itself. Turgenev at his highest never quits nature, yet he always uses the surface, and what is apparent, to disclose her most secret prin ciples, her deepest potentialities, her inmost. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1870 ‘King Lear of the Steppes’ is a novella by Russian writer Ivan Turgenev, loosely based on Shakespeare’s tragedy. The story takes place in the Russian countryside, where a trusting father decides to retire and divide his property between his two daughters. The move proves to be a mistake however, and throughout the story Turgenev raises questions about love, life, and family. A captivating read for fans of Russian literature. Ivan Turgenev (1818-1883) was a Russian novelist, playwright, poet, and short story writer. Born in Oryol, Turgenev spent time studying at the University of Moscow, the University of St. Petersburg, and the University of Berlin. His 1852 collection of short stories, ‘A Sportsman’s Sketches’ catapulted him into the literary limelight - a series of observations on nature and the evils of serfdom, Turgenev regarded it as one of his most important moral works. In 1854 amidst an oppressive atmosphere in Russia for writers and artists, Turgenev emigrated to Western Europe where he would spend a great deal of time throughout the latter part of his life, and which would lead to his belief in Russia’s need to westernise – an outlook which set him apart from his contemporaries Dostoevsky and Tolstoy. Some of Turgenev’s best-known works include ‘Rudin’, ‘A Nest of the Gentry’ and ‘Fathers and Sons’. He died in Paris in 1883.
