Book A Layman s Look at Life

Download or read book A Layman s Look at Life written by Sean Ferguson and published by Covenant Books, Inc.. This book was released on 2024-05-16 with total page 109 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Consider this small book to be a message in a bottle cast in the ocean. If you should find it washed up on your shore, you will find it is not a request for help or rescue. Rather, it's more of a treasure map pointing to a road less traveled by many. Using science, religion, philosophy, observation, common sense, thousands of hours pondering, and hundreds of hours studying, the author offers some interesting thoughts about life. It's not an attempt to sell you anything but an effort to pique your curiosity, fire your imagination, and hopefully point you to a path of new discovery. As a recovered alcoholic who has suffered from lifelong clinical depression, the author shares a perspective gained by painful experience and a newly discovered strong foundation upon which to stand. The result is a new way to view the world, which will lead you to your own path of discovery. It should make you question and verify everything you believe. Keep asking questions, eliminate the frivolous, and find your rock to stand on.

Next to Psalm 23, the Lord’s Prayer is perhaps the most universally beloved passage in Scripture. It has been repeated millions of times by countless individuals for nearly 20 centuries. Yet, in spite of so much use and familiarity it has never lost its luster. A Layman’s Look at the Lord’s Prayer presents that luster in a fresh way to help you rediscover its incredible power. It is mostly devoid of theological terms, so it is easier for the average person to understand. There are applicable illustrations to help people comprehend the message from Scripture and its application to the message of the day. There is a devotion for every day of the year, and several devotions for specific days in the Christian calendar, as well as for days on which we honor both mothers and fathers. The reader will likely gain a closer relationship with their Lord and Savior Jesus Christ through daily use and may also develop a closer relationship with family members when used as a family devotion. The changing and challenging circumstances in our world today require closer relationships with both God and family. A Layman's Daily Devotional lends itself to development of both relationships. With few exceptions, each devotion is a stand-alone devotion. This book would make a meaningful gift to a young person venturing out on their own, who could develop the habit early of spending time each day with God, which is always a good way to start every day. A Layman's Daily Devotional is written such that it can be used year after year throughout one's life.

Download or read book The Lay Saint written by Mary Harvey Doyno and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2019-10-15 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Lay Saint, Mary Harvey Doyno investigates the phenomenon of saintly cults that formed around pious merchants, artisans, midwives, domestic servants, and others in the medieval communes of northern and central Italy. Drawing on a wide array of sources—vitae documenting their saintly lives and legends, miracle books, religious art, and communal records—Doyno uses the rise of and tensions surrounding these civic cults to explore medieval notions of lay religiosity, charismatic power, civic identity, and the church's authority in this period. Although claims about laymen's and laywomen's miraculous abilities challenged the church's expanding political and spiritual dominion, both papal and civic authorities, Doyno finds, vigorously promoted their cults. She shows that this support was neither a simple reflection of the extraordinary lay religious zeal that marked late medieval urban life nor of the Church's recognition of that enthusiasm. Rather, the history of lay saints' cults powerfully illustrates the extent to which lay Christians embraced the vita apostolic—the ideal way of life as modeled by the Apostles—and of the church's efforts to restrain and manage such claims.

Book A Layman s Christianity

Download or read book A Layman s Christianity written by Ken Dickason and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2010-11 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sordid romance! Gripping intrigue! Fast-paced action! None of these really describe a book about theology, and they, surprisingly enough, do not apply to "A Layman's Christianity," either. However, if you are looking for a well thought out book, replete with scriptural references, written, not by a dreary doctorate of theology nor by a "hip," "young" pastor of a mega-lo-church, but by an average joe, then look no further. Written from a young man's perspective, "A Layman's Christianity" is a book that delves into the belief that every man has the right to think about who God is and what He wants from our lives and that phrase, "every man," is not restricted to age, gender, or educational background, but rather should be based on the author's commitment to God and his love for His Bible. "A Layman's Christianity" is not a "how-to-manual" for living a better Christian life, but is rather an outline of several characteristics and ideas that, taken together, form the author's ideal Christian. Leaving room open for argument and individual thought, "A Layman's Christianity" refuses to be taken at face value and insists that the reader check its assertions with the Bible, thus fulfilling the purpose of the book: that every man and woman who follows after God has the right and responsibility to think about Him and upon Him.
