Book excerpt: The ontology translation problem (aka ontology interoperability problem) appears when we decide to reuse an ontology (or part of an ontology) with a tool or language that is different from those ones in which the ontology is available. If we force each ontology-based system developer, individually, to commit to the task of translating and incorporating to their systems the ontologies that they need, they will require a lot of effort and time to achieve their objective. This book presents two contributions to the current state of the art on ontology translation among languages and/or tools. The first contribution is a proposal for a new model for building and maintaining ontology translation systems. The second contribution characterises existing ontology translation approaches from the perspectives of semantic and pragmatic preservation, that is, consequence and intended meaning preservation respectively.

In total, 1,630 papers were submitted to FGIT 2010 from 30 countries, which - cludes 150 papers submitted to the FGCN 2010 Special Sessions. The submitted papers went through a rigorous reviewing process: 395 of the 1,630 papers were - cepted for FGIT 2010, while 70 papers were accepted for the FGCN 2010 Special Sessions. Of the 70 papers, 6 were selected for the special FGIT 2010 volume p- lished by Springer in LNCS series. Fifty-one papers are published in this volume, and 13 papers were withdrawn due to technical reasons. We would like to acknowledge the great effort of the FGCN 2010 International Advisory Board and Special Session Co-chairs, as well as all the organizations and individuals who supported the idea of publishing this volume of proceedings, incl- ing SERSC and Springer. The motivation for using graphs, trees and sequences. Is that they are 1) more expressive than flat representations, and 2) potentially more efficient than multi-relational learning and mining techniques. At the same time, the data structures of graphs, trees and sequences are among the best understood and most widely applied representations within computer science. Thus these representations offer ideal opportunities for developing interesting contributions in data mining and machine learning that are both theoretically well-founded and widely applicable.
