The system adopted for the compilation of this Index, may be seen from the first three or four articles (a) under a are given the words in which a represents some other letter, or combination of letters, or from which a is omitted. 80 also under 6, c and all the other letters of the alphabet. (8) the second a, or prepmn'tion, records all the places where it may be-found in the text. (7) the lemmata are printed in Clarendon or black type, ex. Gr. Aablta (3cd article of the Index); the figures after this lemma and the Glossator's interpretation or gloss on the lemma, refer to the text (see p. Chapter in, gloss then follows, between the source from whence the lemma has been extracted, with a short quotationi from this source showing the lemma in its context. After this follow editorial observations wherever necessary. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Early Medieval Winchester

Download or read book Early Medieval Winchester written by Ryan Lavelle and published by Oxbow Books. This book was released on 2021-11-30 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winchester’s identity as a royal centre became well established between the ninth and twelfth centuries, closely tied to the significance of the religious communities who lived within and without the city walls. The reach of power of Winchester was felt throughout England and into the Continent through the relationships of the bishops, the power fluctuations of the Norman period, the pursuit of arts and history writing, the reach of the city’s saints, and more. The essays contained in this volume present early medieval Winchester not as a city alone, but a city emmeshed in wider political, social, and cultural movements and, in many cases, providing examples of authority and power that are representative of early medieval England as a whole.

Book Herbs and Healers from the Ancient Mediterranean through the Medieval West

Download or read book Herbs and Healers from the Ancient Mediterranean through the Medieval West written by Anne Van Arsdall and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-22 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Herbs and Healers from the Ancient Mediterranean through the Medieval West brings together eleven papers by leading scholars in ancient and medieval medicine and pharmacy. Fittingly, the volume honors Professor John M. Riddle, one of today's most respected medieval historians, whose career has been devoted to decoding the complexities of early medicine and pharmacy. "Herbs" in the title generally connotes drugs in ancient and medieval times; the essays here discuss interesting aspects of the challenges scholars face as they translate and interpret texts in several older languages. Some of the healers in the volume are named, such as Philotas of Amphissa, Gariopontus, and Constantine the African; many are anonymous and known only from their treatises on drugs and/or medicine. The volume's scope demonstrates the breadth of current research being undertaken in the field, examining both practical medical arts and medical theory from the ancient world into early modern times. It also includes a paper about a cutting-edge Internet-based system for ongoing academic collaboration. The essays in this volume reveal insightful research approaches and highlight new discoveries that will be of interest to the international academic community of classicists, medievalists, and early-modernists because of the scarcity of publications objectively evaluating long-lived traditions that have their origin in the world of the ancient Mediterranean.
