Book excerpt: 'An expansive novel reminiscent of the literary breadth, humanity, and historical depth found in Vasily Grossman's Life and Fate' Christophe Boltanski, winner of the 2015 Prix Femina for The Safe House 'A captivating sweep of a novel about love, resilience and impossible choices... I loved it!' Christina Lamb, chief foreign correspondent Sunday Times Seventeen-year-old Debora Rosenbaum, ambitious and in love with literature, arrives in the capital of the new Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic, Kharkiv, to make her own fate as a modern woman. The stale and forbidding ways of the past are out; 1930 is a new dawn, the Soviet era, where skyscrapers go up overnight. Debora finds work and meets a dashing young officer named Samuel who is training to become a fighter pilot. They fall in love, and begin to mix with Ukraine's new cultural elite. But Debora's prospects - and Ukraine's - soon dim. State-induced famine rolls through the over-harvested countryside, and any deviation from Moscow-dictated ideology is punished by disappearance. When Samuel is sentenced to ten years' hard labour, Deborah is left on her own with a baby. And this is only the beginning. As advancing Nazi armies move through Ukraine during World War II, its yellow fields of wheat run red with blood. Forced to renounce the man she loves, her identity and even her name, Debora also learns to endure, manipulate and resist. No Country for Love follows the hard choices Debora makes as Ukraine, caught between two totalitarian ideologies, turns into the deadliest place in the world - while she tries to protect those she loves most. A sweeping, stunningly ambitious novel about a young Ukrainian girl arriving in Kharkiv in 1930, determined to contribute to the future of her country, and her struggle to survive the devastation and trauma that ravage Ukraine.

Book excerpt: Usually someone’s life story starts with chapter 1, but not in this case. When many women become slaves in the world even before they were born and they are raped before they have a chance to become a young woman and are uprooted the day the age of a teen ends to become a full grown-up, they will not have any chapter. Especially in the third world, for them, chapter 0 comes to life before their life starts and stays with them until they are old and vanish from this world. But sometimes it takes only one hero to come in your dream to pull you out of your hurtful childhood and help you to find a way to the healing future, and you decide to fully immune your soul and spirit and protect the childhood of many other children. That is when you know that you are on the path to be able to start your chapter with number 1—a chapter that you can write about, even if it hurts to write. You can tell the world that you have your own head to write your own destiny you are proud to have. That is when you are determined to go extra miles to write the history of your lost childhood. The word destiny in Farsi means “head wrote.” How do you write one’s own destiny if there is nothing to put in the head in the first place, I wonder? In many countries, the practice of raising slaves is still active in some villages and even in some cities. And that gives birth to ill society. Ill society doesn’t stay still; it wanders around the globe to collapse on noble society. That’s when victimization claws women back over and over again, even when you are in a civilized country. Because the mind and the body both are equally damaged. Perhaps the reason for me to become a volunteer for a woman who was running for election in 2007 was born in my heart when I was seven years old and my grandma gave me a pen for a New Year’s present and said, “You too can write!” And I kept the dream of writing about women in my mind since I was a little child who stood up to walk and was trained to walk a few steps behind the brothers. So I think starting to write my side of story with chapter 1 will be a little confusing for everyone. And I know it is impossible for a civilized world to imagine not having rights. But even in civilized countries, still many people think there is no such thing as an invisible chapter, or if they hear of it, they will say, “Who cares, let it be, it is on the other side of the earth, not our problem.” So they decide to see this system of women slavery as an invisible society that is not a great threat to the society of our future generation.

Duncan West would like nothing better than to have his connections to the East Coast severed. He wants to be in Hollywood making feature films, not adhering to the whims of a diva. Aurora is tied to the East by a suffering parent. And Duncan wants to seek his fortune in the West. Can East and West meet?

Download or read book Women and Politics written by Lynne Ford and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-05-15 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Women and Politics is a comprehensive examination of women's use of politics in pursuit of gender equality. How can demands for gender equality be reconciled with sex differences? Resolving this paradoxical question has proceeded along two paths: the legal equality doctrine, which emphasizes gender neutrality, and the fairness doctrine, which recognizes differences between men and women. The text's clear analysis and presentation of theory and history helps students to think critically about the difficulties faced by women in politics, and about how public policies in education, labour and the economy, and family and fertility, impact gender equality. The fully-revised fourth edition explores new critical perspectives, recent political events, and current challenges to gender equality, including the 2016 presidential election and Hillary Clinton's candidacy, the fight for equal pay and paid leave, and the debate over reproductive rights and campus sexual assault. It also includes current scholarship on the intersections of race, class, and gender, and expanded coverage of minority women, women in the military, and conservative women. This text, and its two-path framework, is essential to understanding women's pursuit of equality via the political system.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To a conservative, this book is kryptonite. But, for liberals who love to hate George W. Bush, Our Brave New World is addicting. Rants, which originally appeared on the internet concurrent with his Presidency, will take you back to the inanity and malfeasance of Bush and his cronies - Cheney, Rumsfeld, Rice, Rove, Ashcroft, 'Brownie,' Gonzales and Abramoff. Relive such unforgettable moments as Bush proclaiming 'mission accomplished,' the search for the weapons of mass destruction, the revelations at Abu Ghraib, the paranoia of Plamegate, the horror of Hurricane Katrina, and the helplessness of financial meltdown. With sardonic wit, and allusions and quotations from anti-utopian literature, popular culture, and the works of authors like T.S. Elliot and Joseph Conrad, Our Brave New World chronicles a nightmare era in American history.
Download or read book A Country With No Name written by Sebastian De Grazia and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2011-04-27 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In an imaginative and masterful work of history, Pulitzer Prize-winner Sebastian de Grazia has created two memorable characters. Nineteen-year-old Oliver Huggins is in for the tutorial of his life. For twelve afternoons, Claire St. John, a beguiling British graduate student, will reveal to him the untold story of American Constitutional history. Her means: the Socratic method. Her message: that the Constitution was itself unconstitutional, and that its authors' inability to choose a name for the republic muddied the document's meaning for the future ahead. Through these "tutorials" de Grazia passes in review our most revered heroes—Jefferson, Washington, Marshall, Lincoln, and Thoreau—revealing the complexity of their characters. St. John's unsettling tales arouse more in her disciple than intellectual curiosity. Their relationship unrolls in so humorous and seductive a way that only a musty academic could object. Satirical, intelligent, and sure-handed, A Country with No Name combines history and literature, politics and law to reinvigorate our best traditions.
