Book An Investigation of Spray Velocity Resulting from High velocity Penetration of Thin Plates by Disks

Download or read book An Investigation of Spray Velocity Resulting from High velocity Penetration of Thin Plates by Disks written by John D. Di Battista and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An analysis based on one-dimensional shock-wave theory is presented to study the maximum velocity of the spray emanating from the rear surface of a thin meteoroid bumper. A set of experiments was designed to evaluate the analytical results. The targets used were 0.0025-cm-thick 11 aluminum foil and 0.041-cm-thick 1100 H14 aluminum plate. The projectiles used were made of tungsten and were disk shaped, 0.56 cm in diameter, and either 0.076 cm or 0.038 cm in thickness. The target and projectile dimensions used in the experiments insured that the one-dimensional assumptions used in the theory were valid. In addition, using a very dense tungsten projectile to impact the aluminum targets produced aluminum spray velocities well in excess of the tungsten projectile velocity. With this technique, the projectile and target materials were clearly differentiable in the spray. The experiments were conducted in the impact velocity range of 0.089 to 0.295 cm/micronsec. The ratio of maximum target-material spray velocity to projectile impact velocity is defined and is plotted against projectile impact velocity. The ratio predicted by using the theory agrees well with the experimental results in the range of impact velocities investigated. Representative series of photographs are presented and analyzed for the experiments conducted in both thicknesses of aluminum targets.

Book A Peridynamic Simulation of Repeated Projectile Impacts on a Steel Plate

Download or read book A Peridynamic Simulation of Repeated Projectile Impacts on a Steel Plate written by Jacob Williams and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Understanding multi-projectile impact events is important for a wide range of military and aerospace applications. However, experimental studies in this field remain technologically challenging. In this thesis, simulations of two 20 mm caliber projectiles impacting a steel target above the ballistic limit were performed. Peridynamics, a non-local, particle-based computational method, was used to simulate the impacts. The spacing between the two impacts on target was varied to study the effects on projectile residual velocity, projectile deformation, and fragmentation. To optimize the Peridynamic parameters, the simulation results from a single impact were compared to experimental data available in the literature. Methods to track and quantify the kinetic energy, direction, mass, and velocity of individual fragments, including the projectile post impact, were developed. The size of the fragmentation field, the variation of individual fragments, and the residual velocity of the projectile post impact were studied. From the double impact study, we find increased projectile residual velocity, reduced projectile deformation, and greater variation in the fragmentation field with impacts from a second projectile compared to a single impact. It is observed that the increases in projectile residual velocity and reduction in projectile deformation diminish to near first impact levels as the projectile spacing is increased. The projectile is also found to ricochet in closer spacings causing large velocity components normal to the projectile's flight path and reduced damage to the plate. The overall size of the fragmentation field of double impact cases is found to be similar in size to single impacts, however, the number of fragments produced from the impacts are different. In cases where the second projectile impacted closer to the initial impact, only one fragment was formed, while cases with spacing 1.25 calibers and greater produced more fragments than the initial impact. This thesis proved to be successful in employing Peridynamic theory to study complex impact and fragmentation related problems.

This book was released on 2016-08-18 with total page 622 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This unique compendium contains a vast systematized data of 14,000 experiments on high-velocity penetration into metals, concrete, reinforced concrete, and geological media which were published in the open literature (journal papers, reports, conference proceedings) during the last 70 years. Data presented in this edition are related to the initial and final stages of penetration and include: parameters which characterize mechanical and geometric properties of the striker and the shield; striking and residual velocities of projectile or depth of penetration; changes of mass and size of projectile; angles that determine the initial and residual position of the projectile; ballistic limit velocity; basic characteristics of plug and deformation of the shield.Unified form of data representation and common notations are used throughout the book. All information is presented in numerical form in SI units. The book also contains indices which allow a fast search of the authors' publications and related experiments. Theoreticians, design engineers and experimentalists will find this handbook a valuable reference material.

Book Effects of Projectile Shape on Thin Plate Perforation at Normal Incidence

Download or read book Effects of Projectile Shape on Thin Plate Perforation at Normal Incidence written by R. T. Sedgwick and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 63 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Analytical, numerical and experimental results are compared in a systematic investigation of the effects of projectile shaped on thin plate perforation. The analysis of five low velocity impact involving optimal-, ogival-, Russian-, conical- and cylindrical-head projectile comprise the study. A three-way comparison of simple perforation theory predictions, HELP numerical solutions and available experimental data is made for the five problems. The HELP solutions are in excellent agreement with the experimental data. Although the simple perforation formulas are sensitive to projectile shape, they do not provide adequate residual energy predictions. Further numerical studies of this type should provide additional insight into the penetration process and eventually lead to improved perforation formulas. (Author).
