Book A Laboratory Manual in Astronomy Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Laboratory Manual in Astronomy Classic Reprint written by Mary E. Byrd and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-07-27 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Laboratory Manual in Astronomy The present laboratory manual has grown out of the needs of my own students during the past fifteen years It is based upon a primer called Questions on the Sky, which was printed in 1893, especially for the use of students at Smith College. Teachers who have expressed their approval of the primer may be interested to know that the questions given there are republished here with some modifications and addi tions. After the introductory chapters on almanacs, maps, and globes, all the questions proposed are designed to be answered directly from observation or by data obtained from observation. The one aim and object of the book is to lead to direct study of the heavens. For the convenience of teachers and students the number of observations suggested is large. Few of them, comparatively, should be undertaken by any one student. But it needs only a modicum of experience to show that astronomy more than other sciences demands large room for choice and adaptation. The factors which condition the work of young observers are so many and varied that teachers within a few miles of each other may require different sets of topics, and students in the same class often work to the best advantage along different lines. The manual is designed to be used in connection with one of the standard works on general astronomy, like those of Young and Newcomb and while it has seemed necessary to include a few definitions and explanations, no inroad has been made into the province of the regular textbook, and it has invariably been left to the teacher to call attention to inferences and conclusions which depend jointly upon reading and observing. The references made to Young throughout the book refer to the revised edition of Young's General Astronomy, and Elements of Astronomy. The letter E. Before the number of the article indicates that the reference is to the Elements. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Laboratory Manual in Astronomy The laboratory method of instruction is growing in favor so rapidly with astronomical teachers that there is little occasion for any plea in its behalf. It is a recognized fact that the direct investigation of celestial phenomena gives a vividness and reality to the subject and arouses interest and enthusiasm difficult to obtain by any other means. Indeed, to require the study of the heavenly bodies and provide no means for observing them is somewhat like restricting the student of botany to text-books and to pictures of plants. It cannot be urged as a valid objection to this method that large mathematical attainments and expensive equipment are prerequisites. Laborious investigations necessitating telescopes and observatories are not the ones which should engage the attention of our students at the beginning; but rather the simple observations which teach them how to see and enable them to gather at first hand a store of pleasant astronomical information. Whether the study of astronomy is taken up first in secondary schools or colleges, years of experience have convinced me that it is best to devote at least one term to general astronomy and naked-eye observation. An unobstructed place for watching the heavens, a few home-made instruments, and evening hours of laboratory instruction will, I believe, do more to foster a genuine interest in astronomy or prepare for the use of instruments of precision than any amount of text-book study which is supplemented only by desultory star-gazing. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Physical Laboratory Manual This manual has been adapted particularly to the present equipment and requirements of a course in experimental physics in Harvard College known as Physics C. This course is accompanied by a series of illustrated lectures to the class as a whole, two each Week, and one hour each week of recitation and problem work to the class in small sections. A knowledge of algebra and plane geometry, and a slight acquaintance with the notation of trigonometry are necessary. Familiarity with the use of logarithms or the slide rule is strongly recommended for reducing the labor of computation. The course should properly be preceded by a more elementary course in physics. Small type has been used for a few descriptive and explanatory sections of the text which are not immediate parts of the specific directions of the experiments. The small type does not, however, signify relative unimportance of the material. Introductory remarks setting forth the application of the principles involved precede each experiment or each group of experiments involving the same principles. In writing this manual, some material, for which much indebtedness is expressed, has been freely taken from Professor Sabine's Laboratory Course in Physical Measurements. For two reasons a revision of this book has become necessary. The distribution of time in Physics C has been so altered that the laboratory work now occupies a shorter time than formerly, and the exercises have therefore become unduly long. It is also desirable to include a wider variety of experiments in the manual, so as to fit the somewhat different needs of the various classes of students who use it. In the course of the revision many experiments have been altered, where experience has shown this to be advantageous, or on account of changes in the apparatus. Book A Laboratory Manual of General Chemistry Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Laboratory Manual of General Chemistry Classic Reprint written by William J. Hale and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-12 with total page 492 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Laboratory Manual of General Chemistry A special chapter has been introduced for the study of negative radicals. A differentiation is here made between the reactions of a few special reagents upon compounds before and after heating. Finally, the highly objectionable method of recording in the laboratory those observations which are only to be trans ferred later to a so-called notebook is now eliminated. A student who but once engaged in this indefensible practice is far too prone in later years to record weighings and other data on scraps of paper. When such useless records seem to attain a reasonable degree of satisfaction to his untrained mind he may actually transfer them to a more desirable location, but neither to the credit of the location nor the student. This manual is so constructed that all questions under each heading are consecutively numbered. These same numbers appear also upon the opposite or blank pages and indicate positions for the records. Upon the form and accuracy of these records the student himself must expect the proper estimate of his scientific ability. For the interest and care with which the manuscript has been read by Professor William G. Smeaton of this laboratory and for his many valuable suggestions the author wishes to express his gratitude and appreciation. This book was released on 2017-09-16 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Laboratory Manual of Physical Chemistry In view of the fact that there are, as a rule, available for laboratory work' not more than two and one-half hours at a time, it has been found desirable to have the different pieces of apparatus set up beforehand by the instructor. To this end, each experiment is preceded by an exact list of the appa ratus and chemicals needed. It is believed that this will materi ally aid the instructor in assembling the necessary equipment. At the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, the laboratory course immediately follows the completion of the theoretical course in physical chemistry, and students are thus prepared to take up the study of any experiment herein listed. It is therefore found practical to prepare the equipment for one or two units of each exercise before the laboratory course starts, and to shift the student successively from one experiment to another. In this way, an excessive amount of preparatory work is avoided. Many of the experiments have been in use in their present form at this Institute, and elsewhere, for a number of years, and have been found to be thoroughly satisfactory. Download or read book A Laboratory Manual for Work in General Science Classic Reprint written by Otis W. Caldwell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-28 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Laboratory Manual for Work in General Science Laboratory work and the experiences of home and school furnish an important basis for the course in general science. The following outlines for experiments and demonstrations have been developed so as to include the exercises which have proved most valuable for use in the first year of the high school. The outlines are the result of the cooperative work of several high-school teachers through a period of years, and have been tried with more than a thousand pupils. Experiments other than those here included have been tried, but through constant trial, elimination, and addition the work has assumed its present form. It is the purpose of the outlines to direct the pupils into the habit of finding out about many kinds of common problems in science. To do this in the best way common materials are used for experi mentation, since common and simple phenomena are likely to be more educative for young pupils than those which are uncommon and complex. The materials needed are listed in connection with each exercise. It is hoped that teachers will encourage pupils to use their own initiative in devising new ways to perform the experiments, as well as in working out additional problems which are sure to be suggested in the discussion of the experiments here outlined. At the close of the directions for work, one or more additional problems are suggested, and the use of these as topics for discussion will make the work more valuable. The exercises have been planned so that each one requires a shorter period of continuous atten tion than is usually true in the more advanced laboratory work in high-school science. Experience has shown that first-year pupils work more effectively when the units of work assigned are relatively short and definite. This plan results in a larger number of exercises than would be used in a more advanced course inscience. In many cases, however, two or more exercises may be performed in a single laboratory period. Supplementary or alternative experiments, which sometimes require more complex apparatus, are often given. These supplementary experiments are indicated by the same arabic number as the preceding experiment, but with a letter added. Thus 22a is an experiment which may be used in addition to or instead of Exercise 22. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Laboratory Manual, Arranged to Accompany: Second Edition of a Course From an educational point of view, chemistry is really the oldest of the experimental sciences. The problem as to what laboratory work should constitute the first year's course is therefore one to which a great deal of thought has been devoted, and many educational experiments have been made in an endeavor to solve it. Much ingenuity has been exercised in the development of suitable laboratory experiments and in the invention of simple apparatus adapted to a beginner's inexperience, and a great wealth of admirable illustrative experiments is now at the command of every teacher. Book Physical Laboratory Manual

Download or read book Physical Laboratory Manual written by S. E. Coleman and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2019-01-13 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Physical Laboratory Manual: For Secondary Schools The number and variety of laboratory manuals in physics now on the market are so large that the merits of a new one are hardly to be sought in novelty of content, but rather in the utility of the material chosen from the abundant common store and in the method of presenting it. Believing that these are both matters Of great importance and that the possibilities of improvement in them have not yet been exhausted, the author has written this manual in the hope that it will con tribute toward this end. Since both the choice of material and the method of treat ment are in a large measure determined by the view enter tained in regard to the place and function of the laboratory work in the course in physics, a brief statement on this point seems desirable. Rejecting the extreme view that little im portance is to be attached to any part of the work except the laboratory course, as well as the opposite extreme which rele gates this part of the work to the position of a supplementary adjunct to the old form of text-book instruction, the author has adopted in his teaching and has assumed as the controlling principle in the preparation of this manual the View that the laboratory course should stand in coordinate relationship to the work of the class room; which, in his opinion, should include as important elements qualitative experimental work by the teacher, the systematic study of a good text-book, as large a use of reference books as time and opportunity permit, a constant appeal to the everyday experience of the pupils, and, finally, the recitation or quiz, in which the information gleaned from the several sources is classified, organized into scientific knowledge, and assimilated.
