Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Laboratory Guide in Histology The purpose of this book is to furnish laboratory instructions adapted for use in any standard course of normal Histology. With the exception of gross anatomy, no laboratory subject today enjoys more uniformity of presentation than does Histology. In the study of the fundamental tissues greater flexibility of treatment exists than in the microscopic anatomy of organs, yet in both definite routine structures must be observed and their inter-relations and significance emphasized. For this reason it is hoped that a laboratory guide designed to accomplish these ends, without reference to the peculiarities of any particular course, may prove useful. For the most part, directions involving fresh tissues and organs, or specially stained and treated preparations, illustrative of uncommon features, have been omitted. This is done not with the intention of minimizing their importance, but because it is in these minutiae that courses vary most. An attempt has been made to put the treatment throughout on an inductive basis. Rather than presenting a mere list of structures to be identified, in so far as is practicable, the student is led to scrutinize, explain, and reach independent conclusions. The frequent interjection of appropriate queries should relieve the instructor of much tedious and often belated individual quizzing and directing. Y. It is the third that has been arranged for such use, the first two having been prepared under the direction of the former head of the Department, Professor S. H. Gage. Naturally, therefore, in the selection of many of the type specimens and in the choice of methods his ideas are prominent in the present one. So closely are they interwoven with my own that no attempt to give credit has been made further than this general acknowledgment by one who was his pupil and later his assistant. While planned for courses offered by the writer, the guide is believed to have a wider usefulness. The aim has been to place before the student an outline which will assist him in the study of the specimens furnished in the course as well as facilitate the work of instruction. The well known plan has been followed of introducing questions which may usually be answered in the study of the specimen or from collateral reading. Numerous drawings are called for. Opportunity of gaining a practical knowledge of general histological methods is given. In brief, the plan of instruction long in operation in the Department is adhered to in the present directions. The only distinct rearrangement in the order of presentation is the attempt to bring more closely together the blood and blood-forming organs usually so separated in textbooks of histology. Students are furnished with microscopes, reagents, and all necessary apparatus, with the exception of razors, slides, cover-glasses, and boxes for the preservation of specimens. So little time is usually at the disposal of medical students for collateral reading, and so necessary is it to occupy as little of the laboratory time as possible in oral descriptions of tissues and methods, that these notes have been prepared with the expectation that students will anticipate each lesson by reading beforehand the brief section devoted to its theme, and thus be ready to commence the practical work of the lesson hour without loss of time. It is not to be expected that epitomized descriptions of structures as elaborate as are many of those with which we have to deal in histology, will be in all cases perfectly clear and intelligible without the aid of figures; but the actual specimens prepared, and the sketches from them which are made in the laboratory by the students themselves, will make good, it is hoped, the lack of illustration in the text. There are many points in this as in every developing science which are still unsettled - opinion in regard to them changing or being modified as new facts and investigations are recorded. These have been treated, for the most part, very briefly in the text, it being left for the supplementary oral instruction to enlarge upon and explain them as the light thrown upon each by new researches may seem to require.
