Download or read book Excuse Me While I Disappear written by Joanna Scott and published by Little, Brown. This book was released on 2021-04-20 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From a Pulitzer Prize finalist and "greatly gifted and highly original artist" comes a masterful collection of stories about the timeless universal struggle to connect (New York Times). Joanna Scott, the critically acclaimed author of ten novels and two collections, turns her “incandescent imagination” (Publishers Weekly) back to the craft of the short story, with breathtaking results. Ranging across history from the distant past to the future, Scott tours the many forms our stories can take, from cave wall paintings to radio banter to digitized archives, and the far-reaching consequences of our communications. In Venice in the Late Middle Ages, a painter's apprentice finds a way to make his mark on canvases that will survive for centuries. In the near future, after the literary canon has been preserved only on the cloud and then lost, a scholar tries to piece together a little-known school of writers committed to using actual paper. In present day New England, a radio host invites his electrician to stay for dinner, opening up new narrative possibilities for both men. Written in prose so naturally elegant, smooth, and precise that it becomes invisible, Excuse Me While I Disappear asks what remains of our stories—as individuals and civilizations—after we are gone.

This book was released on 2023-05-30 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this memoir, childhood recollections become the springboard for depicting the challenges of a Latina, an immigrant, and a bicultural mother in the United States. The vignettes of life under communist rule in her native Cuba help readers glean a harsh contrast with the civil liberties Americans enjoy. Infused with humor and candid introspection, the writing tackles the pitfalls, the contradictions, and the cultural scrimmages that emerge after marriage to an Anglo man and during the upbringing of their bicultural daughter. When her enthusiasm for Spanish language immersion at home meets with the child's resistance, the author is forced to question the visceral attachment she feels for her birth language. Stumbling through motherhood, she ponders how to live an authentic sense of self while mothering in English. She resolves not to push the daughter to speak Spanish and risk damaging their mother-daughter bond. Instead, the author begins to write and crafts this family legacy as an invitation for her daughter to embrace her Cuban-Spanish lineage. This Latina mother's journey of self-reflection dredges memories of her birthplace, family, exile, cultural adaptation, and social integration. Through the narrative lens of a child, refugee, daughter, wife, mother, professor, and an acculturated Cuban American, the author depicts the culture-clashing complexities of her biculturalism. It is while examining the precariousness of family relationships that the author arrives at a deeper understanding of the nuances of ethnic identity. Through this writing, she achieves a genuine embrace of the extraordinary adoptive country that irrevocably ties her to her beloved American daughter. May you, reader, be inspired to collect and stitch for posterity your tapestry of family stories.

Download or read book The Dead Man s Finery written by Ramón del Valle-Inclán and published by Aris and Phillips Hispanic Cla. This book was released on 2013 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ramon del Valle-Inclan is one of Spain's greatest dramatists. His particular legacy is the esperpento, a satirical mode combining tragedy and farce and characterised by its use of the grotesque. The Dead Man's Finery (1926) and The Captain's Daughter (1927) are two short esperpentos that satirise the military, which for Valle-Inclan encapsulated the worst and most retrogressive qualities of the Spanish nation. In The Dead Man's Finery, Johnny Bluster is a decommissioned veteran of the Spanish American War who steals a dead man's clothes in order to woo a prostitute. A parody of the Don Juan legend, the play takes the problematic, protean and devilish Don Juan and sets his outrageous behaviour in a very particular social and historical context. The Captain's Daughter is the most historically and politically oriented of Valle-Inclain's works for the theatre. A man is killed and the accident of his death sets off a chain of events in which exploitation and self-interest are the orchestrating forces, concluding in a military coup that topples the government. An overt satire of the rise to power of General Primo de Rivera in 1923, the play dispenses with the individual protagonist and portrays a society in crisis. Notorious for his recondite use of language, Valle-Inclain emphasises the popular idiom without ever falling into picturesque realism. Rather than recreate accurate modes of speech he creates a mode of expression that highlights incongruity and contrast, emphasising the puppet-like quality of his characters. Translated here for the first time into English, the plays are accompanied by a critical introduction and notes to guide the reader or director of these plays.Notorious for his recondite use of language, in these plays Valle-Inclan emphasises the popular idiom without ever falling into picturesque realism; rather than recreate accurate modes of speech he creates a mode of expression that brings together all the play's characters, regardless of their status or place in society. The emphasis on incongruity and contrast creates a peculiarly sarcastic tone that permeates the dialogue. The plays are accompanied by a critical introduction and notes to guide the reader or director of these plays, both fine examples of Valle-Inclan's expressionistic and experimental theatre.
