Download or read book Current Trends in Child Second Language Acquisition written by Belma Haznedar and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2008-07-09 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents recent generative research on the nature of grammars of child second language (L2) acquirers -- a learner population whose exposure to an L2 occurs between the ages of 4 to 8. The main goal is to define child L2 acquisition in relation to other types of acquisition such as child monolingual and bilingual acquisition, adult L2 acquisition, and specific language impairment. This comparative perspective opens up new angles for the discussion of currently debated issues such as the role of Universal Grammar in constraining development, developmental sequences in L2, maturational influences on the 'growth' of grammar, critical period effects for different linguistic domains, initial state and ultimate attainment in relation to length of exposure, and L1-transfer in relation to age of onset. These issues are explored using longitudinal, cross-sectional, and experimental data from L2 children acquiring a range of languages, including Dutch, English, French, and Greek.
Download or read book Education and Migration written by Prue Holmes and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-06-04 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From an international, research-led perspective, this book explores how languages are foregrounded in education in different countries and educational sectors, and among different groups of people in contexts of migration. It is concerned with the movement of people and their languages as they migrate across borders, and as languages—and their speakers—are under threat, pressure and pain, even to the point of being silenced. The contributors explore the multilingual possibilities and opportunities that these situations present. For example: where children’s education is neglected because of displacement or exclusion; or in classrooms where teachers and educational leaders seek to meet the needs of all learners, including those who are new citizens, refugees, or asylum seekers. Together, the findings and conclusions emerging from these studies open up a timely space for interdisciplinary, inter-practitioner, and comparative researcher dialogue concerning languages and intercultural education in times of migration. Originating from an Arts and Humanities Research Council funded project "Researching multilingually at the borders of language, the body, law and the state", this book provides readers with a natural impetus for exploring how languages and their speakers create new imaginaries and new possibilities in educational contexts and communities, as people engage with one another in and through these languages. This book was originally published as a special issue of Language and Intercultural Communication.

Download or read book The Fabrication of the Autonomous Learner written by Judith Hangartner and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-10-06 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a thorough and detailed analysis of how the figure of the ‘autonomous learner’ shapes educational practices. It unpacks the impact of current educational reform discourse that focuses on the individual pupil as a learner, while neglecting the social dimensions of classroom practices. In view of the yet unknown requirements of the knowledge economy, students are demanded to take more responsibility for their learning and to become self-reliant, independent, lifelong learners. In turn, teachers are asked to tailor education to the individual needs of their students and to foster their individual learning trajectories. Based on in-depth fieldwork and long-term observation of interactions in classrooms and other scholastic settings, scholars from three European countries – France, Germany and Switzerland – show how the translation of the figure of the ‘autonomous learner’ into classrooms is shaped by distinct cultural traditions. Chapters analyse teaching routines and conceptions of self-reliance involved in autonomy-oriented settings and discuss how these change the sociality of the classroom. They scrutinize how autonomy is used to differentiate between students and how it contributes to the reproduction of social inequality. The book brings into dialogue two neighbouring research traditions that research autonomous learning from a sociological perspective and which have largely ignored each other until now. In so doing, the contributions engage a critical perspective for a careful empirical analysis in order to better understand what is being done in the name of autonomy. Providing insight into the many facets of developing and nurturing self-standing pupils across various educational contexts, this is ideal reading for scholars in the field of education, as well as teachers and decision-makers across the educational sector.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is representative of a fraction of what we have learned over the years in various countries around the world. We study various things related to human resource development in various countries to understand the problems, solutions, and forms of perfect education for our students. We also study issues related to food because food has an important relationship with health, namely adequate nutrition and human energy sources. Health and including food are important factors in building human capital. We found many food problems in various countries including developed countries. A very popular issue related to labor. This book presents a small part of our study in 22 countries on 5 continents in this book we focus on looking globally to see comparisons between countries by vectoring human variables and the performance of the agricultural industry for each country. We conduct qualitative studies to understand the problems in each country we visit and study so that we can provide solutions or suggestions that might be a solution for the country where we live and study. Sometimes the solution is a collaboration between countries. Because we find that every country, whether developed or developing country, has strengths and weaknesses and has the potential for beneficial collaboration. To understand globally and comprehensively or in aggregate, we use quantitative studies with official data from the world bank. Both qualitative and quantitative have their own strengths and weaknesses because they have different points of view.

Download or read book Origins of the Alphabet written by Claudia Attucci and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2015-09-18 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the fact that writing has arisen independently many times in various different regions of the world, including Egypt, Sumer, China, and Mexico, the concept of the alphabet was invented only once, somewhere between Egypt and Phoenicia, with all known alphabets going back to this single source. While it is possible, up to a certain point, for scholars to provide an answer as to how the alphabet came about, it is much more difficult to understand the cause of its origin: why did it come about? In February 2013 Polis – the Jerusalem Institute of Languages and Humanities invited some of the leading experts studying the origins of the alphabet to Jerusalem for an interdisciplinary debate on this topic. Although the birth of the alphabet has been the subject of numerous international conferences and symposia, studies offering a linguistic, sociological or psychological perspective on the development of writing are extremely rare. This volume, bringing together the proceedings of this conference, shows that a broad consensus is emerging concerning the main factors and circumstances that surrounded the birth of the alphabet, accounting for such facets as the date of the first-known alphabetic inscriptions, the cultures involved in its invention, and the influence of the linguistic structure of the language spoken by the inventors.
