Download or read book Conceptual Design Support Tool written by Dereje Engida Woldemichael and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2011-12 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conceptual design is considered as the most critical and important phase of design process. It is the stage where product's fundamental features are determined, large proportion of the life cycle cost of the product is committed, and other major decisions are made, which have significant impact on the downstream design and manufacturing processes. It is a knowledge intensive process where diverse knowledge and several years of experience are put together to design quality and cost effective products. Unfortunately, computer support systems for this phase are lagging behind compared to the currently available commercial computer aided design tools for the later stage of design. This book presents a framework of computer based computational tool known as conceptual design support tool to address these problems. The tool assists designers, mainly mechanical engineers, in performing functional modelling, concept generation, displaying the generated concepts on the morphology chart, concept combination, and concept evaluation in the early stage of design. The book also addresses design knowledge management system by using design reuse philosophy for future design.

Book Modeling Creativity and Knowledge Based Creative Design

Download or read book Modeling Creativity and Knowledge Based Creative Design written by John S. Gero and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2013-05-13 with total page 351 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the last decade research into design processes utilizing ideas and models drawn from artificial intelligence has resulted in a better understanding of design -- particularly routine design -- as a process. Indeed, most of the current research activity directly or indirectly deals only with routine design. Not surprisingly, many practicing designers state that the level of understanding represented by these models is only of mild interest because they fail to embody any ideas about creativity. This volume provides a set of chapters in the areas of modeling creativity and knowledge-based creative design that examines the potential role and form of computer-aided design which supports creativity. It aims to define the state-of-the-art of computational creativity in design as well as to identify research directions. Published at a time when the field of computational creativity in design is still immature, it should influence the directions of growth and assist the field in reaching maturity.

Book Design Computing and Cognition 12

Download or read book Design Computing and Cognition 12 written by John S. Gero and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-09-03 with total page 636 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Design thinking, the label given to the acts of designing, has become a paradigmatic view that has transcended the discipline of design and is now widely used in business and elsewhere. As a consequence there is an increasing interest in design research. This is because of the realization that design is part of the wealth creation of a nation and needs to be better understood and taught. The continuing globalization of industry and trade has required nations to re-examine where their core contributions lie if not in production efficiency. Design is a precursor to manufacturing for physical objects and is the precursor to implementation for virtual objects. At the same time, the need for sustainable development requires the design of new products and processes, which feeds a movement towards design innovations and inventions. The papers in this volume are from the Fifth International Conference on Design Computing and Cognition (DCC’12) held at Texas A & M University, USA. They represent the state-of-the-art of research and development in design computing and design cognition. They are of particular interest to researchers, developers and users of advanced computation in design and those who need to gain a better understanding of designing.

Book Bisociative Knowledge Discovery

Download or read book Bisociative Knowledge Discovery written by Michael R. Berthold and published by Springer. This book was released on 2012-06-27 with total page 491 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern knowledge discovery methods enable users to discover complex patterns of various types in large information repositories. However, the underlying assumption has always been that the data to which the methods are applied to originates from one domain. The focus of this book, and the BISON project from which the contributions are originating, is a network based integration of various types of data repositories and the development of new ways to analyse and explore the resulting gigantic information networks. Instead of finding well defined global or local patterns they wanted to find domain bridging associations which are, by definition, not well defined since they will be especially interesting if they are sparse and have not been encountered before. The 32 contributions presented in this state-of-the-art volume together with a detailed introduction to the book are organized in topical sections on bisociation; representation and network creation; network analysis; exploration; and applications and evaluation.

Book Biologically Inspired Design

Download or read book Biologically Inspired Design written by Ashok K Goel and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-07-16 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From simple cases such as hook and latch attachments found in Velcro to articulated-wing flying vehicles, biology often has been used to inspire many creative design ideas. The scientific challenge now is to transform the paradigm into a repeatable and scalable methodology. Biologically Inspired Design explores computational techniques and tools that can help integrate the method into design practice. With an inspiring foreword from Janine Benyus, Biologically Inspired Design contains a dozen chapters written by some of the leading scholars in the transdisciplinary field of bioinspired design, such as Frank Fish, Julian Vincent and Jeannette Yen from biology, and Amaresk Chakrabarti, Satyandra Gupta and Li Shu from engineering. Based in part on discussions at two workshops sponsored by the United States National Science Foundation, this volume introduces and develops several methods and tools for bioinspired design including: Information-processing theories, Natural language techniques, Knowledge-based tools, and Functional approaches and Pedagogical techniques. By exploring these fundamental theories, techniques and tools for supporting biologically inspired design, this volume provides a comprehensive resource for design practitioners wishing to explore the paradigm, an invaluable guide to design educators interested in teaching the method, and a preliminary reading for design researchers wanting to investigate bioinspired design.

Book AI System Support for Conceptual Design

Download or read book AI System Support for Conceptual Design written by John E.E. Sharpe and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is well-known that some 85% of the resources necessary to design and bring to market a product are committed by decisions taken in the first 10% of the design activity. This together with the wish to reduce further the time-to-market of high quality innovative products has increased the need for computer support at the conceptual design stage of the engineering design process life-style. This proceedings firmly focuses on the continuing research into new uses of Artificial Intelligence (AI) during the conceptual design process. It shows how novel applications of AI may be integrated with aspects of solid modelling, simulation optimisation and multiple criterion decision- making. A particular emphasis is placed on the use of AI methods in the overall design of products from major Civil Engineering structures to Consumer Electronics.

Book Engineering Design

Download or read book Engineering Design written by Clive L. Dym and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2014-04-17 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contrary to popular mythology, the designs of favorable products and successful systems do not appear suddenly, or magically. This second edition of Engineering Design demonstrates that symbolic representation and related problem-solving methods, offer significant opportunities to clarify and articulate concepts of design to lay a better framework for design research and design education. Artificial Intelligence (AI) provides a substantial body of material concerned with understanding and modeling cognitive processes. This book adopts the vocabulary and a paradigm of AI to enhance the presentation and explanation of design. It includes concepts from AI because of their explanatory power and their utility as possible ingredients of practical design activity. This second edition has been enriched by the inclusion of recent work on design reasoning, computational design, AI in design, and design cognition, with pointers to a wide cross section of the current literature.
