Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Knot of Citrus Trees Caused by Sphaeropsis Tumefaciens In 1906 one of the writers (hedges) visited several of the larger Jamaican pens (estates) on which limes and oranges were culti vated, for the purpose of studying the disease in the field. It was found, however, that although in previous years the disease had caused much trouble in the northern and western parts of the island, the majority of the growers had been able to keep it under control by cutting and burning and no longer considered it very serious. Download or read book Gum Diseases of Citrus Trees in California Classic Reprint written by Howard Samuel Fawcett and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-10 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Gum Diseases of Citrus Trees in California Previous investigators had come to the conclusion that all gum diseases of citrus trees in California originated independently of micro-organisms.1 It was held that these diseases were largely auto genous in their nature, and frequently induced through the effects of certain climatic or soil conditions alone. It now appears evident that these environmental conditions cannot by themselves initiate the severe forms of gummosis in citrus earlier attributed to them, although certain factors are found to play (as they do in most para sitio diseases) an important role as contributing conditions which favor infection and invasion of the host by the causal parasites. Book Red Spiders and Mites of Citrus Trees Classic Reprint

Download or read book Red Spiders and Mites of Citrus Trees Classic Reprint written by Henry Josef Quayle and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-09-04 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Red Spiders and Mites of Citrus Trees Next to the scale insects, red spiders and mites are the most important pests of citrus trees in California. On account of their small size, and because the foliage and fruit of the tree are not conspicuously marred either by their presence or by the covering of sooty mold fungus, as is the case with some of the scale insects, the actual injury done by red spiders and mites is not always appreciated. _their distribution is very general over the citrus sections, and they may be found in some numbers at most any season of the year. So long as they do not become numer ous the injury they do is, not important and in such cases it is not good economy to apply treatment. Because of their more orless continual presence in scattering numbers some growers take red spiders as a mat ter of course, and fail to recognize their importance when they become abundant and do damage, or come to a realization of their injurious nature after most of the damage has been done and the spiders them selves begin to disappear, as they often do. While, therefore, the presence of spiders in scattering numbers should be the cause Of no par ticular concern, the presence of. Excessive numbers of spiders should be the cause of enough concern for the grower to start immediately to apply control measures. Dropping of the leaves and fruit is the ultimate result of red spider injury. But the cause should be checked long before this extreme effect is evident. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Gum Disease of Citrus Trees in California Digestion.-starch being a solid material, it is necessary that it be made soluble before it can pass out of the leaves or be further utilized by the plant. This process takes the place in the same manner as in ani mals, namely, by the action of the substance called diastase, which converts starch into sugar and thus makes it soluble in water. Further changes of a very complicated nature then go on in the nutritive materials, through which a combination is effected of those materials obtained respectively by the roots and leaves, forming various soluble substances of a nutritive nature. This book was released on 2017-12-09 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Some Abnormal Water Relations in Citrus Trees of the Arid Southwest and Their Possible Significance The method used in obtaining the data here presented consisted in the main of simple moisture determinations of leaves and fruits of various kinds taken at different hours of the day. The material was gathered and quickly placed in weighing cups fitted with ground glass covers. After weighing, the material was thoroughly dried and then reweighed. For convenience in the case of fruits and large leaves, the material was cut into small pieces. The calculations are based on the dry weight of the material, except as otherwise stated. The data obtained are shown in condensed form in table 1. The figures shown represent averages of at least ten duplicate determina tions, and in most instances of more. Book Current Trends in Plant Disease Diagnostics and Management Practices

Download or read book Current Trends in Plant Disease Diagnostics and Management Practices written by Pradeep Kumar and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-04-28 with total page 471 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plant diseases play an important role on our daily lives. Most of plant diseases are visible and are caused by biotic and/or abiotic factors. Symptoms are usually the results of a morphological change, alteration or damage to plant tissue and/or cells due to an interference of the plant’s metabolism. All basic structures of vascular plants are subject to attack by pathogens. The failure in accurate disease diagnosis and management may lead to huge losses in plant production and related commodities, which causes nutritional food scarcity. Typically, the appearance of a biotic symptom will indicate the relatively late stage of an infection and/or colonization of a pathogen. Expert detection, accurate diagnosis, and timely management play a significant role in keeping plants free from pathogens. In this book expert scholars share their research knowledge and key literature which are vital toward the diagnosis of plant diseases across the globe, addressing traditional plant pathology techniques, as well as advanced molecular diagnostic approach.

Book Induced Resistance for Plant Defence

Download or read book Induced Resistance for Plant Defence written by Dale Walters and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2008-04-15 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plant diseases worldwide are responsible for billions of dollarsworth of crop losses every year. With less agrochemicals being usedand less new fungicides coming on the market due to environmentalconcerns, more effort is now being put into the use of geneticpotential of plants for pathogen resistance and the development ofinduced or acquired resistance as an environmentally safe means ofdisease control. This comprehensive book examines in depth the development andexploitation of induced resistance. Chapters review currentknowledge of the agents that can elicit induced resistance, genomics, signalling cascades, mechanisms of defence to pests andpathogens and molecular tools. Further chapters consider thetopical application of inducers for disease control, microbialinduction of pathogen resistance, transgenic approaches, pathogenpopulation biology, trade offs associated with induced resistanceand integration of induced resistance in crop protection. The bookconcludes with a consideration of socio-economic driversdetermining the use of induced resistance, and the future ofinduced resistance in crop protection.

Achieving this is where horticulture, natural flora and fauna and the environment interact in achieving sustainable development. Horticulture is the fundamental partner of ecological and environmental science and provides an understanding of eco-system services. Live plant networks are essential for rural and urban life. They are integral parts of natural communities, the context of historic and modern architecture and a means for rejuvenating cities and uniting communities. Plants provide urban, peri-urban and rural employment, business and tourism opportunities, leisure, rest and relaxation. These facets of Environmental Horticulture are clearly described in this book.
