Book The Knights Templars Illustrated Edition

Download or read book The Knights Templars Illustrated Edition written by Charles Greenstreet Addison and published by Echo Library. This book was released on 2020-09-22 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Charles Greenstreet Addison (1812-66) was an English barrister and historical, travel, and legal writer. He was born in Maidstone, Kent and was called to the bar in 1842 by the Inner Temple, joining the home circuit and Kent sessions. In 1848 he married Frances Octavia, the twelfth child of the Honourable James Wolfe Murray, Lord Cringletie, with whom he had seven children. In 1838 Addison published his first book, Damascus and Palmyra, in which he described a journey in the Middle East. He then wrote A History of the Knights Templar, the first two editions of which appeared in 1842 and a third in 1852. In 1843 he published another historical wortk on the Temple Church. Aside from these works, Addison was the author of two legal text-books: A Treatise on the Law of Contracts (1845), and Wrongs and Their Remedies, a Treatise on the Law of Torts (1860). Both books went through several editions in the UK and US and it is for these he is best remembered today. Addison's interest in the Knights Templars, sparked during his pilgrimage to the Holy City of Jerusalem when he gained admission to the courts of their ancient Temple, and on his visits to the ruined fortresses and castles of the ancient order of the Temple in Palestine and in Syria, was further piqued by the restoration of the Temple Church in the City of London in 1841. Having examined numerous documents and texts, he became an expert on the Templars' history, giving a clear account in this book, starting with the origins of the brotherhood, and the foundations and ideals of the order. He goes on to explain their role in protecting pilgrims travelling to the Holy Land, their feats during the Crusades, and their ultimate downfall, leading to the abolition of the order and disposal of its property. This edition of The Knights Templars is reprinted from the third edition of 1852 and includes a facsimile of the original cover together with five illustrations in black and white.

Download or read book The Knights Templar written by Rudolf Steiner and published by Rudolf Steiner Press. This book was released on 2013-05-16 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Founded in the early twelfth century, allegedly to protect pilgrims to the Holy Land, the Knights Templar became famous for their pioneer banking system, crusading zeal, and strict vows of obedience, chastity and poverty. Having grown to some 15,000 men, they came to be perceived as a threat by Philip the Fair, who in 1307 disbanded the group and tortured their leaders for confessions. The French king accused the order of heresy, sodomy and blasphemy. Recent works of fiction and popular histories have created a resurgence of interest in the mysterious Knights Templar. Numerous contradictory and fantastic claims are made about them, adding to the enigma that already surrounds the warrior monks of France. In this unique collection of lecture material and writings from Rudolf Steiner, a new perspective emerges. Based on his spiritual perceptions, Steiner speaks of the Templars' connection to the esoteric tradition of St John, their relationship with the Holy Grail, and their spiritual dedication to Christ. He describes the secret order that existed within the Templars, and the strange rituals they performed. He also throws light on the Templars' attitude to the Roman Church, and the spiritual forces that inspired their torture and confessions.

Book excerpt: Illustrated. Having some years ago, during a pilgrimage to the Holy City of Jerusalem, gained admission to the courts of the ancient Temple of the Knights Templars, which still exists on Mount Moriah in a perfect state of preservation as a Mussulman Mosque, and having visited many of the ruined fortresses and castles of the ancient order of the Temple, whose shattered walls are still to be seen at intervals in Palestine and in Syria, from Gaza to Antioch, and from the mountains of the Dead Sea to the shores of the Mediterranean, I naturally became greatly interested in the history of the order, and in the numerous remains and memorials of the Knights Templars still to be met with in various stages of decay and ruin in almost every part of Europe. The recent restoration of the Temple Church at London, the most beautiful and the best preserved of all the ancient ecclesiastical edifices of the western provinces of the Temple, first suggested to me the idea of writing a short historical account of the varied fortunes of that great religious and military fraternity of knights and monks by whom it was erected, and of their dark and terrible end. Born during the first fervour of the Crusaders, the Templars were flattered and aggrandized as long as their great military power and religious fanaticism could be made available for the support of the Eastern church and the retention of the Holy Land; but when the crescent had ultimately triumphed over the cross, and the religious and military enthusiasm of Christendom had died away, they encountered the basest ingratitude in return for the services they had rendered to the Christian faith, and were plundered, persecuted, and condemned to a cruel death by those who ought in justice to have been their defenders and supporters.

Book First Templar Nation

Download or read book First Templar Nation written by Freddy Silva and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2017-11-21 with total page 592 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Overturns the long-established historical narrative about the origins and purpose of the Knights Templar • Explains how and why the Templars created Europe’s first nation-state, Portugal, with one of their own as king • Reveals the Portuguese roots of key founding members, their relationship with the Order of Sion, the Templars’ devotion to Mary Magdalene and John the Baptist, and the meaning and exact location of the Grail • Provides evidence of Templar holy sites and hidden chambers throughout Portugal • Includes over 700 references, many from new and rare sources Conventional history claims that nine men formed a brotherhood called the Knights Templar in Jerusalem in 1118 to provide protection for pilgrims traveling to the Holy Land. Overturning this long-established historical narrative, Freddy Silva shows that the Order of the Temple existed a decade earlier on the opposite side of Europe, that the protection of pilgrims was entrusted to a separate organization, and that, in league with the Cistercian monks and the equally mysterious Order of Sion, the Templars executed one of history’s most daring and covert plans: the creation of Europe’s first nation-state, Portugal, with one of their own as king. Including over 700 references, many from new and rare sources, Silva reveals Portugal, not Jerusalem, as the first Templar stronghold. He shows how there were eleven founding members and how the first king of Portugal, a secret Templar, was related to Bernard de Clairvaux, head of the Cistercians. The author explains the Templars’ motivation to create a country far from the grasp of Rome, where they could conduct their living resurrection initiation--whose candidates were declared “risen from the dead”--a secret for which the Church silenced millions and which the Templars protected to the death. Placing the intrepid Knights in a previously unknown time and place, Silva’s historical narrative reveals the Portuguese roots of key founding members, their relationship with the Order of Sion, the Templars’ unshakeable devotion to Mary Magdalene and John the Baptist, and how they protected a holy bloodline in Portugal. He also provides evidence of secret Templar holy sites, initiation chambers, and hidden passageways throughout Portugal, often coinciding with pagan and Neolithic temples, and explains how their most important site forms a perfect triangle with the Abbey of Mont Sion in Jerusalem and the Osirion temple in Egypt. The author also reappraises the meaning of the Grail and reveals its exact location, hidden in plain sight to this very day.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Knights Templars The favourable reception given to the first edition of the ensuing work, and the interest that was taken in the extraordinary and romantic career of the Knights Templars, induced me to publish a second edition greatly enlarged, and to introduce various collateral matters of an antiquarian and local character, interesting only to a comparatively small number of readers. This enlarged edition having been exhausted, it occurred to me, in preparing a third edition for the press, that the work might be materially shortened and reduced in price without in anywise detracting from its value and interest as a record of the chief events of one of the most remarkable and interesting periods of history, and of the extraordinary and romantic achievements of the first and most ancient of the great religio-military orders of knights and monks established during the crusades. The dry matters of detail, of local and partial interest, which interfered with the continuity of the main narrative, have been struck out of the body of the work, and the more striking incidents of the history have been thus brought into greater prominence. The long Latin and French extracts from the old chronicles have also been discarded from the notes, but the historical references have been preserved to enable the reader, if he thinks fit, to study the quaint and curious language of the originals. By these means, and by enlarging the size of the page, the work has been compressed into a smaller compass, and the price reduced nearly one half. It is hoped that these alterations will be found to be improvements. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Secrets of the Knights Templar

Download or read book Secrets of the Knights Templar written by Susie Hodge and published by Quercus. This book was released on 2013-12-03 with total page 461 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Secrets of the Knights Templar is the compelling chronicle of the warrior monks and their fight to defend the Catholic faith, and of their participation in the efforts to vie for control of the Holy Land with the Muslim armies of Kurdish military genius Saladin and his successors. Informally organized in 1119 to protect pilgrims on their journeys to visit the Holy Land, and officially sanctioned by the Catholic Church in 1129, the medieval Knights Templar grew into an elite fighting force that played a central role in the battles of the Crusades. They were highly trained, well equipped, and unafraid to take up the sword to defend the church at the limits of western civilization. Though Templar was initially celebrated for their military acumen and acts of bravery, the once-celebrated order was eventually dismantled in disgrace, accused of political crimes as well as crimes against the faith. With its concise, authoritative, and accessible narrative--amplified by extensive citations from contemporary sources, and accompanied by generously captioned and stunning images of the period--Secrets of the Knights Templar brings a distant era of history dramatically and vividly to life. It is the perfect gift for anyone with a love of medieval, religious, or military history. From the Hardcover edition.

Book A Brief History of the Knights Templar

Download or read book A Brief History of the Knights Templar written by James Burnes and published by Ozymandias Press. This book was released on 2018-01-19 with total page 59 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It was in the year 1119, the twentieth of the Christian dominion in Syria, that nine pious and valiant Knights, the greater part of whom had been the companions of Godfrey de Bouillon, formed themselves into an association, the object of which was to protect and defend Pilgrims on their visits to the holy places. These Knights, of whom the two chief were Hugo de Payens and Godfrey de St. Omer, vowed, in honour of the sweet Mother of God, to unite Monkhood and Knighthood; their pious design met with the warm approbation of the King and the Patriarch, and in the hands of the latter they made the three ordinary vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience; and a fourth, of combating without ceasing against the heathen, in defence of Pilgrims and of the Holy Land; and bound themselves to live according to the rule of the canons of St. Augustine, at Jerusalem. The King assigned them for their abode a part of his palace, which stood close by where had stood the Temple of the Lord. He and his barons contributed to their support, and the abbot and canons of the Temple assigned them for the keeping of their arms and magazines the street between it and the royal palace, and hence they took the name of the soldiery of the Temple, or Templars. When Fulk, Count of Anjou, in the year following the formation of the society, made a pilgrimage to the Holy Land, the Order was even then in such repute that he joined it as a married brother, and on his return home remitted them annually thirty pounds of silver to aid them in their pious labours, and his example was followed by several other Christian princes.

Book The True Story of the Templars

Download or read book The True Story of the Templars written by Rocco Mela and published by Rocco Mela. This book was released on with total page 131 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Finally available the first complete book to know everything, but really everything, about the history of the Knights Templar. In this book we put black on white the true history of the Templars, without getting lost in legends and half-truths. The Templars were a monastic order devoted to the use of weapons to ensure the safety and freedom of the pilgrimage of Christians throughout the Promised Land, at the time of the Crusades. Not against Muslims as non-Christians, but as executioners of the pilgrims' safety. They were the saviors of Christendom for several centuries, until, out of envy and resentment, their order was disbanded. Since then, rivers of ink have been spent to besmirch the Templar order or, even if in good faith, to incense them with abstruse theories used to depict them as a kind of caste that reigns supreme in the world. Is the truth in the middle? Not really. The Templars have a great history, but from the end of the Middle Ages onwards, the order was disbanded. In other words, the Templars are part of the past, a glorious and mythical past, but there is no dietrology that can assume, in our days, their existence. In this book you will therefore find only the truth, no ramifications and assumptions based on nothing. Among other topics, the book will also talk about the Chivalric Ideal, the birth of Chivalry, the Templar Mysteries and the Infamous Trial. Plus, there will be a bonus section dedicated to another order of chivalry! ✓ Buy the book now! What are you waiting for? Don't you want to finally enjoy the history and myth of the Knights Templar?
