Rob Chalmers (1929-2011) entered the Federal Parliamentary Press Gallery in 1951 as a twenty-one-year-old reporter for the now-defunct Sydney Daily Mirror and would retire from political commentary 60 years later - an unprecedented career span in Australian political history. No parliamentary figure - politician, bureaucrat or journalist - can match Chalmers' experience, from his first Question Time on 7 March 1951 until, desperately ill, he reluctantly retired from editing the iconic newsletter Inside Canberra sixty years, four months and eighteen days later. As well as being considered a shrewd political analyst, Chalmers was a much-loved member of the gallery and a past president of the National Press Club. Rob Chalmers used to boast that he had outlasted 11 prime ministers; and a 12th, Julia Gillard described him as 'one of the greats' of Australian political journalism upon his passing. Rob Chalmers is survived by his wife Gloria and two children from a previous marriage, Susan and Rob jnr.

Lives and properties were lost in the spring and summer of 2019 and 2020, when catastrophic bushfires burnt through millions of hectares of mainland Australia. Nearly 3 billion native animals died. And for millions of Australians, and others worldwide, it was through the Australian megafires that the global climate emergency became tangible and concrete, no longer a comfortably deferred, albeit problematic abstraction which could be consigned to future generations to deal with. This book explores the legal and other implications of new understandings of climate emergency arising from the fires, and the emergence of a hierarchy of emergencies as the pandemic came to dominate global and domestic political discourses. It examines narratives of culpability, and legal avenues for seeking retribution from government and big fossil fuel emitters. It also considers the impact of the fires on the burgeoning phenomenon of climate activism, particularly in Australia, and the ways in which pandemic restrictions curtailed such activism. Finally, the book reflects on the fires through the lenses offered by climate fiction, and apocalyptic fiction more generally, in order to consider how these shape, and might shape, our responses to them. This important and timely book will appeal to environmental lawyers and socio-legal theorists; as well as other scholars and activists with interests in climate change and its impact. Book excerpt: Between 1989 and 2013 every industry sector covered by the Transport Workers Union in New South Wales was utterly transformed by processes of globalisation and technological and market change. Large players consumed small firms; in turn, the bigger companies were often acquired by global players. The lesson that emerges from Organising Union is simple: the value of solidarity. In 2001 redundant Ansett workers were told they would never see their entitlements. In 2006 Tooheys owner-drivers were suddenly terminated by the company; the goodwill invested in their trucks and business was declared worthless. Ansett workers received almost all their entitlements—an unprecedented 95 cents in the dollar. The Tooheys drivers’ jobs were saved, the value of their goodwill upheld. Those outcomes were possible only because of the solidarity of transport workers and the support of their union. No one else stood alongside the workers at Ansett and Tooheys as consistently and tenaciously as their own union. Organising Union explores the relationship between the union and key industry players, and between the union and governments. The TWU has often been at the centre of controversy: the turbulent 1989 union election punctuated by accusations of rorts and fist fights; the clashes with the Hawke and Keating governments over the Accord and enterprise bargaining, resulting in the TWU disaffiliating from the ACTU and a truck blockade of the Reserve Bank’s Sydney headquarters; the devastating 2001 Ansett closure and the long industrial war with Qantas culminating in the dramatic 2011 airline shutdown; the struggle to achieve ‘safe rates’ for truckies against the resistance of employers and governments. In the face of these challenges solidarity—the strength of an organising union—has held the TWU together.
