Book Placing Charlotte Smith

Download or read book Placing Charlotte Smith written by Jacqueline M. Labbe and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2020-12-30 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A lively and far-ranging interest in place, space, and situation characterizes the work of Romantic-era British author Charlotte Smith (1749-1806). Featuring ten original essays, an introduction and an epilogue, this volume offers new insights into Smith’s life and work by exploring two central issues: Smith’s place as a foundational writer in her period, and her contribution to the creation of “place” as a concept of social and literary importance. The contributors analyze themes such as itineracy, the natural world, and patriotism; they also explore the position of Smith’s work and authorial identity in terms of genre, aesthetics, and market dynamics. With its innovative approach to place as a material location, symbolic principle, and literary device, this volume advances our understanding of Smith’s work. Placing Charlotte Smith reveals Smith as an author who not only energizes our interest in domestic concerns, but who also shapes a global discourse constituted by changing ideas about borders, travel, national, and international identities.

Book James Malcolm Rymer Penny Fiction and the Family

Download or read book James Malcolm Rymer Penny Fiction and the Family written by Rebecca Nesvet and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-07-30 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: James Malcolm Rymer, Penny Fiction, and the Family is the first monograph focusing on Sweeney Todd and Varney the Vampyre’s creator James Malcolm Rymer (1814–1884). It argues that Rymer wrote his so-called ‘penny bloods’ and ‘dreadfuls’ for and about British urban working families. In the 1840s, the notion of the family acquired unprecedented prominence and radical potential. Raised in an artisanal artistic-literary family, Rymer wrote for and edited family magazines early in that genre’s history, deployed Chartist domesticity to liberal ends, and collaborated with cheap publisher Edward Lloyd to define and popularise the domestic romance genre. In 1850s–1860s penny serials published by George W.M. Reynolds, John Dicks, and Lloyd, Rymer showed how families might sustain Empire and advocated for patriarchal family dynamics in response to literary and political change. During the fin-de-siècle, Rymer’s penny fiction was demonised as hyper-masculine ‘bloods’ and ‘dreadfuls’, a reputation it retains today. Reading Victorian penny fiction’s most indicative author’s works as a corpus and with attention to their original textual, cultural, and political contexts reveals it as the family-oriented phenomenon it in fact was.

Book The Country House Library

Download or read book The Country House Library written by Mark Purcell and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2019-09-03 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beginning with new evidence that cites the presence of books in Roman villas and concluding with present day vicissitudes of collecting, this generously illustrated book presents a complete survey of British and Irish country house libraries. Replete with engaging anecdotes about owners and librarians, the book features fascinating information on acquisition bordering on obsession, the process of designing library architecture, and the care (and neglect) of collections. The author also disputes the notion that these libraries were merely for show, arguing that many of them were profoundly scholarly, assembled with meticulous care, and frequently used for intellectual pursuits. For those who love books and the libraries in which they are collected and stored, The Country House Library is an essential volume to own.

Book The English Farmhouse and Cottage

Download or read book The English Farmhouse and Cottage written by M. W. Barley and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-05-30 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1961, The English Farmhouse and Cottage brings together the evidence collected by those who have studied vanished buildings by excavation, and also examined surviving houses with a gentler instrument, the measuring tape. A change is taking place in the attitude towards the old buildings of the countryside. Into the place of the sentimentalist in search of the picturesque and the architect looking for a style have stepped the local historian and the archaeologist. Mr. Barley has built up a picture of the English countryman and his housing needs. He is concerned particularly with the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries since they were the most formative period in the evolution of the modern house. This book is an essential tool in the hands of those who wish to pursue, whether as tourists or as students, an important and fascinating aspect of the history of Rural England.
