And to regard them as carried by some glacial movement from the northern orifice would seem a much simpler explanation. It is interesting to note that this whole valley, by the way, was free from snow and covered with luxuriant vegetation. And, as was indeed the case generally in these explorations, there was an abundance of animal life observed. BUTTERFLIES AND BEES A little later Greely passed to the other side of this valley and found that he had reached the water shed of this part of Grinnell Land, the other side of the ridge draining into Lake Hazen. Here he did actually see a glazier on the north side of that lake--which ought to have given him a hint about the two trees he had so recently discovered. He also caught, at that point, a butterfly, and saw three shuas, two bumble bees and many flies. A little later a member of his party saw two tern and a long-tailed duck. What was even more remarkable, they next came across a flock of twelve to fifteen birds which resembled snipe but were unlike any actual species of that bird he had ever seen or read of. Other ducks were also seen and nine musk-oxen. Incidentally, a few nights the party were unable to obtain much sleep owing to the large number of flies which bothered them incessantly. The temperature was as. high as 50 degrees Farenheit, and never went below 47 degrees and there was always enough dead willow around for fuel. As the days went on, more muskoxen were seen, a great variety of birds, and quite a little reindeer moss--although it was considered that it never grew as far north as Discovery Harbor. Near Lake Hazen a deserted Eskimo encampment was found, its surroundings "marked by luxuriant vegetation of grass, sorrel, poppies, and other plants. Some specimens of the sorrel...

Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Journey to the Earth's Interior, or Have the Poles Really Been Discovered The Copernican system of astronomy was a step in advance of the Ptolemaic system just be cause it enabled scientists to discover many new facts about the solar system which the error of the old view had hidden from their gaze. My own theory adds to the valuable results gained by the Copernican System, not by subverting it - for I imagine that no sane person would now try to do that - but by accepting it fully, and adding to it a different theory of the evolution of the several planets from their nebulae, and from this new theory of evolution deducing cer tain presumptions about the interior of the earth. These presumptions I have supported by a wealth of facts discovered by the telescopic observations of astronomers of nebulae and one of our sister planets, Mars, and made by ex plorers of the most fascinating parts of our own planet - the polar regions. Book excerpt: The city of "Eden" is located in what seems to be a beautiful valley, yet, in fact, it is on the loftiest mountain plateau of the Inner Continent, several thousand feet higher than any portion of the surrounding country. It is the most beautiful place I have ever beheld in all my travels. In this elevated garden all manner of fruits, vines, shrubs, trees, and flowers grow in riotous profusion.-from The Smoky GodOne of the oddest books ever written, this 1908 work purports to tell the tale of Norwegian sailor Olaf Jansen, who claims to have visited the hollow insides of the Earth through an opening in the North Pole. This land, in which Jansen is said to have lived for two years, is a paradise, inhabited by willowy humans and magnificent creatures-such as 100-foot-long elephants and 20-foot-wide tortoises-a utopia to which we surface-dwelling humans can only aspire.A classic of the literature of the weird, The Smoky God will intrigue everyone fascinated by paranormal theories of alternate realities, hidden truths, and the lost histories of humanity.WILLIS GEORGE EMERSON (1856-1918) also wrote The Builders (1909).

Book excerpt: An NPR Best Book of the Year, Hollow is the story of a professor whose life is unended after an unspeakable tragedy. When Oliver Bonds, a revered religious studies professor at the University of Texas, loses his toddler son and undergoes intense legal scrutiny over his involvement, grief engulfs him completely. His life as he knows it is over; Oliver loses his wife, home, and faith. Three years after his son's death, Oliver lives in a shack without electricity and frequents the soup kitchen where he used to volunteer. It's only when befriended by Lyle, a con artist with a passion for theories of Hollow Earth, that Oliver begins to reengage with the world. Oliver too becomes convinced that the inside of the planet might contain a different realm. Desperate to find a place where he can escape his past, Oliver chases after the most unlikely of miracles. With unforgettable characters, wild imagery, and dark humor, Hollow explores the depths of doubt and hope, stretching past grief and into the space where we truly begin to heal. "With the kind of grace not usually seen in accessible modern fiction, Egerton also invokes many other things with this central metaphor . . . Ollie's voice is one of the most believable I've encountered this year, sustained by honesty, realism, and compassion. In his exile, Ollie has taken stock. His reckoning with the past creates the story's exquisite tension and makes the final scene bloom with tenderness . . . The core of Hollow is anything but." --NPR
