Book A Journey through the World of Leviticus

Download or read book A Journey through the World of Leviticus written by Mark W. Scarlata and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2021-11-18 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Leviticus is often seen as one of the most uninviting books of the Old Testament. Who wants to read about blood sacrifice, infectious diseases, or ancient dietary restrictions? Yet like visiting any foreign country, to truly appreciate its culture one must become familiar with the language, customs, and ways of the people. This book guides the perplexed reader through the foreign signs, symbols, and beliefs of the ancient Israelites. From blood and atonement to the loveable rock badger, we begin to discover the sacred world of Leviticus and its relationship to a holy God who dwells with his people. The rituals and commands God gave to Israel form the deep roots of the biblical tradition that were not meant to be left in the past. Tapping into these roots helps us understand the life and ministry of Christ and how we might pursue holiness today. Each chapter surveys key aspects of Leviticus and then explores how these relate to the New Testament and the life of faith in the twenty-first century. In this accessible and engaging travel log, Scarlata introduces the depth and beauty of Israelite practices prescribed by God that were further revealed in Christ and continue to speak to the life and faith of Christians today.

Book A History of the End of the World

Download or read book A History of the End of the World written by Jonathan Kirsch and published by Harper Collins. This book was released on 2006-08-22 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "[The Book of] Revelation has served as a "language arsenal" in a great many of the social, cultural, and political conflicts in Western history. Again and again, Revelation has stirred some dangerous men and women to act out their own private apocalypses. Above all, the moral calculus of Revelation—the demonization of one's enemies, the sanctification of revenge taking, and the notion that history must end in catastrophe—can be detected in some of the worst atrocities and excesses of every age, including our own. For all of these reasons, the rest of us ignore the book of Revelation only at our impoverishment and, more to the point, at our own peril." The mysterious author of the Book of Revelation (or the Apocalypse, as the last book of the New Testament is also known) never considered that his sermon on the impending end times would last beyond his own life. In fact, he predicted that the destruction of the earth would be witnessed by his contemporaries. Yet Revelation not only outlived its creat∨ this vivid and violent revenge fantasy has played a significant role in the march of Western civilization. Ever since Revelation was first preached as the revealed word of Jesus Christ, it has haunted and inspired hearers and readers alike. The mark of the beast, the Antichrist, 666, the Whore of Babylon, Armageddon, and the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse are just a few of the images, phrases, and codes that have burned their way into the fabric of our culture. The questions raised go straight to the heart of the human fear of death and obsession with the afterlife. Will we, individually or collectively, ride off to glory, or will we drown in hellfire for all eternity? As those who best manipulate this dark vision learned, which side we fall on is often a matter of life or death. Honed into a weapon in the ongoing culture wars between states, religions, and citizenry, Revelation has significantly altered the course of history. Kirsch, whom the Washington Post calls "a fine storyteller with a flair for rendering ancient tales relevant and appealing to modern audiences," delivers a far-ranging, entertaining, and shocking history of this scandalous book, which was nearly cut from the New Testament. From the fall of the Roman Empire to the Black Death, the Inquisition to the Protestant Reformation, the New World to the rise of the Religious Right, this chronicle of the use and abuse of the Book of Revelation tells the tale of the unfolding of history and the hopes, fears, dreams, and nightmares of all humanity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few treatments of the death of Jesus Christ have made a point of accounting for the gruesome, degrading, public manner of his death by crucifixion, a mode of execution so loathsome that the ancient Romans never spoke of it in polite society. Rutledge probes all the various themes and motifs used by the New Testament evangelists and apostolic writers to explain the meaning of the cross of Christ. She shows how each of the biblical themes contributes to the whole, with the Christus Victor motif and the concept of substitution sharing pride of place along with Irenaeus's recapitulation model.

Download or read book The Tabernacle Temple and Sanctuary written by Dennis Herman and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2015-11-18 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This third book in the series on the Tabernacle, Temple, and Sanctuary covers the Book of Leviticus. During that part of the journey to the promised land, God continued to reach out to Israel on a number of levels. One of the most predominant levels involved Aaron, the first high priest, and of course his sons, the priests under Aaron. God used symbols of the family on many levels to convey the relationship He held out to the entire camp crossing the wilderness. Many other lessons are taught in the fact, Aaron waited for instructions from his younger brother Moses. When we examine the sequence of lessons God taught on that journey, we see why God chose the younger son as His prophet, and the elder son as the first high priest. Those lessons are personal and still apply to Christian ministry today. The main theme of this book is to identify and take an in depth look at each story related to the priesthood and services inside the Tabernacle. Most people look at the services and symbols, never noticing Moses omitted explanations revealing the spiritual meaning of those symbols. Missing that little detail omits one of the most important questions in scripture. Why didn't Moses explain the symbols in the Tabernacle? Once we see what appears to be missing in the books Moses recorded, we can begin to see and understand the concise sequence God used to teach Moses the prophet, Aaron the high priest, Aaron's sons, the Levites, and other people in the community. God used a distinct pattern to teach each of them. Of course God had a good reason to follow those patterns. Each of those sequences equips us with valuable information we need to effectively reach the world today. In essence, Moses recorded a handbook for teachers of all ages. How that information is used is up to you. Think of the spiritual implications. Israel and a host of other people just left Egypt where they lived as slaves for 400 years. All they knew was how to take orders and preform tasks assigned since birth. Apply that style of life to a life of sin. Then apply that symbolism to a journey across the wilderness to the promised land. We also have to pay attention to the sequence Moses recorded the sacrifices. When Moses recorded them, what the specific steps were, and why Moses presented particular sacrifices at a specific time. Each of those details has a direct bearing on their spiritual meaning.

Book Reflections on the Book of Leviticus

Download or read book Reflections on the Book of Leviticus written by Martin Sicker and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2013-10-28 with total page 541 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The theme that unifies the diverse contents of this biblical work is that of holiness, as the text asserts: Ye shall be holy; for I the Lord your God am holy (Lev. 19:2). The burden of the work is set forth guidelines as to how the children of Israel were to attain that goal. One of the great practical issues dealt with in Leviticus is the problem of connecting with the one and only God through the practice of a form of worship that is superficially similar to but at the same time radically different from the modes of worship practiced by the other peoples of the ancient world, which almost universally included sacrificial rites. Because it was extremely difficult for one to relate to a deity that could not be depicted graphically, sacrificial rites were also prescribed for the children of Israel as a concession to human weakness, but were designed in a manner to leave little if any room for human inventiveness, which if left unchecked would likely result in idolatrous practices. Accordingly, the ancient rites were infused with layers of detailed instructions and obscure symbolisms that make the text difficult to comprehend, while raising important ethical considerations that are an essential aspect of the biblical concept of holiness. This study explores some of the profound ideas that lie buried beneath the surface of this extremely complex biblical text.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Have you been told Leviticus is the most boring book in the entire Bible? It may lack the excitement and the action of Genesis and Exodus, but it contains important teachings for all of us today. In this third volume of A Journey through Torah, the authors examine the world as it was then--a world where people lived in tents or small communities. Here, they gathered in the open spaces of the Tabernacle and brought animals to the priests for slaughter and offerings to God. This was a world and time when people were told how to dress, what they could and could not wear, and how they were to worship God. The authors explore how we can find relevance in the reading of the Book of Leviticus as they seek to answer an essential question: How can we make meaningful connections with God in the world we live in today?
