Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Journey Godward of Doulos Iesou Kristou (a Servant of Jesus Christ) Many parts of Boston have undergone changes, not merely social and structural, but geographical and almost geological. Water has been made into land and hills carried into the sea. But the site of the house where Bishop Grafton was born is still occupied by a habitation, being a part of that upon which the Touraine, the chief hotel, now stands. Book The Character and Purpose of Luke s Christology

Download or read book The Character and Purpose of Luke s Christology written by Douglas Buckwalter and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1996-08-28 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Luke's christology is carefully designed. Luke portrays the exalted Jesus as God's co-equal by the kinds of things he does and says from heaven. Through the Holy Spirit, the divine name and personal manifestations, Jesus behaves toward people in Luke-Acts as does Yahweh in the Old Testament. His power and knowledge are supreme. Jesus sovereignly reigns over Israel, the church, the powers of darkness and the world. Luke deepens this portrait by depicting Jesus as deity who by nature behaves as servant: the earthly Jesus acted among his people as one who serves; the exalted Jesus continues serving his people by strengthening and encouraging them in their witness of him to the world. That the believers in Acts resemble the way Jesus behaved in the Gospel means that they too are now imaging some of his servant-like character in their witness of him.

Book Proclamation from Prophecy and Pattern

Download or read book Proclamation from Prophecy and Pattern written by Darrell L. Bock and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 1997-01-01 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Luke is here presented as contributing to New Testament Christology through his treatment of Old Testament Christological texts. This redaction-critical study argues that Luke's use of the Old Testament is not so much a 'proof from prophecy' as a 'proclamation' that draws both upon prophecies and upon patterns. This proclamation as it is developed in Luke-Acts serves to turn the reader's attention from seeing Jesus as Messiah to seeing him eventually as Lord.

Book New Testament Christology

Download or read book New Testament Christology written by G. E. Gorman and published by Greenwood. This book was released on 1988-12-08 with total page 512 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The New Testament doctrine of the dual nature of Jesus Christ--his historical existence as a man and his simultaneous reality as a god--has stimulated a resurgence of christological studies by twentieth-century scholars and theologians. This bibliography is the first work to provide a thorough critical examination of this important body of modern scholarship. Containing more than 1,900 annotated entries, it will be an essential reference guide for anyone with an interest in early Christianity, Christian doctrine, or biblical studies. In his introduction, Hultgren summarizes trends in New Testament christology as reflected in twentieth-century European, British, and American works. Sensitively arranged in subject categories, the bibliography begins with nine chapters relating to the foundations of christological studies. The remaining forty-one chapters are divided into three sections dealing with specific topics: the titles given to Christ, the treatment of Christ by New Testament writers, and primary christological themes. Many of the entries include extensive commentary as well as passages quoted from the sources. Authors, titles, and subjects are listed in comprehensive indexes. Reflecting both the depth and breadth of Dr. Hultgren's scholarly analysis, this new bibliography is an appropriate choice for New Testament scholars as well as library reference collections.
