Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Journey Across the Continent by the Scenic Route: Colorado, Utah, and New Mexico Via the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railways Located at the very base of Pike's Peak, and shut in on three sides by the foot hills which hide it from view until a sudden turn exposes its hotels, cottages and green surroundings. Known as the Saratoga of the West, on account of the medicinal springs which it possesses, Manitou in reality is far superior in attractiveness to its namesake. It lies within easy reach of Nature 5 grandeurs, and the different rides and rambles are full of surprises and delights. A narrow trail leads by steep grades to the summit of Pike' 5 Peak, following all the whilethe banks of a mountain stream, and affording extended views, through clefts in the range, of the cloud-patched plains beyond. From the snow-covered top of this grand peak, Colorado is spread out at the observer's feet in all its harmon ious confusion. Mountains, plains, parks, rivers and lakes meet the eye at every turn, and the sight is one to linger in one's memory forever. Another pathway, the Ute Pass, extends to Manitou Park, where a mountain-hemmed valley, watered by a twisting stream, reposes in the midst of odorous forests. Near the hotels is Williams Canon, a red-rock gorge worn by the waters long ago, and containing in one side of its high walls the mysterious Cave of the Winds. The hundred or more chambers of this cave are filled with stalactites and stal. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Railroads, tourism, and government bureaucracy combined to create modern religion in the American West, argues David Walker in this innovative study of Mormonism's ascendency in the railroad era. The center of his story is Corinne, Utah—an end-of-the-track, hell-on-wheels railroad town founded by anti-Mormon businessmen. In the disputes over this town's frontier survival, Walker discovers intense efforts by a variety of theological, political, and economic interest groups to challenge or secure Mormonism's standing in the West. Though Corinne's founders hoped to leverage industrial capital to overthrow Mormon theocracy, the town became the site of a very different dream. Economic and political victory in the West required the production of knowledge about different religious groups settling in its lands. As ordinary Americans advanced their own theories about Mormondom, they contributed to the rise of religion itself as a category of popular and scholarly imagination. At the same time, new and advantageous railroad-related alliances catalyzed LDS Church officials to build increasingly dynamic religious institutions. Through scrupulous research and wide-ranging theoretical engagement, Walker shows that western railroads did not eradicate or diminish Mormon power. To the contrary, railroad promoters helped establish Mormonism as a normative American religion.

Book Rhetorical Landscapes in America

Download or read book Rhetorical Landscapes in America written by Gregory Clark and published by Univ of South Carolina Press. This book was released on 2021-11-24 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A panoramic explanation of "civic tourism" and the shaping of a national identity At the same time a reading of Kenneth Burke and of tourist landscapes in America, Gregory Clark's new study explores the rhetorical power connected with American tourism. Looking specifically at a time when citizens of the United States first took to rail and then highway to become sightseers in their own country, Clark traces the rhetorical function of a wide-ranging set of tourist experiences. He explores how the symbolic experiences Americans share as tourists have helped residents of a vast and diverse nation adopt a national identity. In doing so he suggests that the rhetorical power of a national culture is wielded not only by public discourse but also by public experiences. Clark examines places in the American landscape that have facilitated such experiences, including New York City, Shaker villages, Yellowstone National Park, the Lincoln Highway, San Francisco's 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exposition, and the Grand Canyon. He examines the rhetorical power of these sites to transform private individuals into public citizens, and he evaluates a national culture that teaches Americans to experience certain places as potent symbols of national community. Invoking Burke's concept of "identification" to explain such rhetorical encounters, Clark considers Burke's lifelong study of symbols—linguistic and otherwise—and their place in the construction and transformation of individual identity. Clark turns to Burke's work to expand our awareness of the rhetorical resources that lead individuals within a community to adopt a collective identity, and he considers the implications of nineteenth- and twentieth-century tourism for both visual rhetoric and the rhetoric of display.
