Book excerpt: A Jongleur Strayed: Large Print Richard Le Gallienne irrored salon of a queen, Flashes from glass to glass, as she walks by, In sweet reiteration still--the queen! So is the world for thee to walk in, sweet; But to see thee is all things to have seen. And, as the moon in every crystal lake, Walking the heaven with little silver feet, Sees each bright copy her reflection take, And every dew-drop holds its little glass, To catch her loveliness as she doth pass, So do all things make haste to copy thee. I, then, to see thee thus over and over, Am wistful too all lovely shapes to see, For each thus makes me more and more thy lover. Book Robert Louis Stevenson Literary Networks and Transatlantic Publishing in the 1890s

Download or read book Robert Louis Stevenson Literary Networks and Transatlantic Publishing in the 1890s written by Glenda Norquay and published by Anthem Press. This book was released on 2020-01-31 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Robert Louis Stevenson, Literary Networks and Transatlantic Publishing in the 1890s investigates Stevenson and the geographies of his literary networks during the last years of his life and after his death. It profiles a series of figures who worked with Stevenson, negotiated his publications on both sides of the Atlantic, wrote for him or were inspired by him. Using archival material, correspondence, fiction and biographies it moves across these literary networks. It deploys the concept of ‘literary prosthetics’ to frame its analysis of gatekeepers, tastemakers, agents, collaborators and authorial surrogates in the transatlantic production of Stevenson’s writing. Case studies of understudied individuals and broader consideration of the networks they represent contribute to knowledge of transatlantic publishing in the 1890s, understanding of transatlantic culture, Stevenson studies, current interest in the workings of literary communities and in nineteenth-century mobility.

Book Literary and Cultural Alternatives to Modernism

Download or read book Literary and Cultural Alternatives to Modernism written by Kostas Boyiopoulos and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-03-20 with total page 457 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our collection of essays re-evaluates the much critically contested term of Modernism that, eventually, came to be used of the dominant, or paradigmatic, strain of literary discourse in early-twentieth-century culture. Modernism as a category is one which is constantly challenged, hybridised, and fractured by voices operating from inside and outside the boundaries it designates. These concerns are reflected by those figures addressed by our contributors’ chapters, which include Rupert Brooke, G. K. Chesterton, E.M. Forster, Thomas Hardy, M. R. James, C.L.R James, Vernon Lee, D.H. Lawrence, Richard La Galliene, Pamela Colman Smith, Arthur Symons, and H.G. Wells. Alert to these disturbing voices or unsettling presences that vex accounts of an emergent Modernism in late nineteenth-century and early twentieth-century literary cultures predominately between 1890-1939, our volume questions traditional critical mappings, taxonomies, and periodisations of this vital literary cultural moment. Our volume is equally sensitive to how the avant garde felt for those living and writing within the period with a view to offering a renewed sense of the literary and cultural alternatives to Modernism.
