Book The Art of Dialogue in Jewish Philosophy

Download or read book The Art of Dialogue in Jewish Philosophy written by Aaron W. Hughes and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aaron W. Hughes presents the first major study of dialogue as a Jewish philosophical practice. Examining connections between Jewish philosophy, the literary form in which it is expressed, and the culture in which it is produced, Hughes shows how Jews understood and struggled with their social, religious, and intellectual environments. In this innovative and insightful book, Hughes addresses various themes associated with the literary form of dialogue as well as its philosophical reception: Why did various thinkers choose dialogue? What did it allow them to accomplish? How do the literary features of dialogue construct philosophical argument? As a history of philosophical form, context, and practice, this book will interest scholars and students working at the intersections of religious studies, philosophy, and literature.

Book Jewish Thought in Dialogue

Download or read book Jewish Thought in Dialogue written by David Shatz and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The essays collected in this volume present carefully crafted and often creative interpretations of major Jewish texts and thinkers, as well as original treatments of significant issues in Jewish theology and ethics. Conversant with both Jewish philosophy and the methods and literature of analytic philosophy, the author frequently seeks to bring them into dialogue, and in addition taps the philosophical dimensions of Jewish law.. The book opens with a philosophical analysis of biblical narratives. It then investigates the relationship between Judaism and general culture as conceived by Rabbi Abraham Isaac Kook and Rabbi Joseph B. Soloveitchik, followed by interpretations of Maimonides' moral theory and his views on human perfection. The remainder of the volume examines both critically and constructively the relationship between religious anthropology and theories of providence; the problem of evil; the challenges that neuroscience poses to religion; law and morality in Judaism; theological dimensions of 9/11; the limits of altruism; concepts of autonomy in Jewish medical ethics; and the epistemology of religious belief.

Book Is There a New Imbalance in Jewish Christian Relations

Download or read book Is There a New Imbalance in Jewish Christian Relations written by António Barbosa da Silva and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Asserts that three preconditions have produced an imbalance and created difficulties in conducting Christian-Jewish dialogue since 1967: that Christians should renounce antisemitism, abstain from proselytizing among Jews, and recognize Israel's right to exist within the boundaries accepted by the UN. Discusses Rosemary Ruether's thesis that Christian anti-Judaism implies the concept of antisemitism, arguing that the intention to eradicate the roots of antisemitism from the New Testament could shake the foundations of Christian teaching and produce a relativization of Christianity. States that some passages of the New Testament are anti-Judaic only with respect to Jesus' contemporaries, and are not inherently anti-Jewish. Ch. 8 (pp. 293-305) discusses the Holocaust from a Christian theological perspective, considering it "absolutely inhuman, anti-biblical and anti-Christian". Concludes that all forms of antisemitism (including the Holocaust) are a rejection of the biblical concept of God, of man, and of Judeo-Christian ethics.

The team of American, Australian, German, Israeli, Palestinian, and Swedish scholars sought to answer: "What understandings might the project develop that could serve as resources for constructive dialogue about Israeli-Palestinian issues?" Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dialogue in the Book of Signs offers a polyvalent analysis of John 1:19-12:50 at the micro-, meso-, and macro-levels. With the help of several synchronic methods, including genre, narrative, rhetorical, and dramatic studies, the author analyzes the content, form, and function of John’s dialogue. Thus, the divine-human dialogue, which is interwoven within the text, provides a key to the understanding of the dialogue between the narrator and the reader. In this volume, after setting a background and a theoretical framework, an extensive exploration of dialogue at the exchange, episode, and narrative levels is offered. The connection of dialogue with other literary aspects such as monologues, signs, I AM sayings, and metaphors is also established. Thus, this study provides a comprehensive understanding of dialogue in John 1-12.
