Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Jewel of Ynys Galon: Being a Hitherto Unprinted, Chapter in the History, of the Sea Rovers To the ordinary English-reading public it may appear somewhat strange to find pirates located in Wales. That, however, must be laid to the account of the writers of fiction, and not to that of the chroniclers of fact. A merely casual eye, running over the pedigrees of the families of note bordering the Welsh coasts, will scarcely fail to find, in the majority of cases, one or more instances of fine, imprisonment, or outlawry suffered for the crime of piracy upon the high seas. Some of these punishments were inflicted to satisfy the clamours of foreign ambassadors at the English Court, notably in early Stuart days, while at a comparatively late date special measures were taken to put down the Welsh pirates and to clear out their nests in the chief ports, amongst which Cardiff is especially mentioned. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Idylls of the Sea IN these little sketches of a few out of the innumerable multitude of ways in which the sea has spoken to me during my long acquaintance with it, I have tried with 'prentice hand to repro duce for shore-dwellers some of the things it has told me. If I were to stop and consider what other men, freeholders upon the upper slopes of the literary Olympus, have done in the same direction, 'i should not dare to put forth this little book. Let my plea be that I have not seen with their eyes nor heard with their ears, but with mine own. This may have some weight with my judges those who will buy the wares I have to sell. Book The Sea and Its Wonders Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Sea and Its Wonders Classic Reprint written by Cyril Hall and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-14 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sea and Its Wonders Very few people know much about the sea. They that go down to the sea in ships, that do business in great waters; these see the works of the Lord, and His wonders in the deep. Yet, though ships have been sailing up and down the world for thousands of years, the Psalmist's words are true of only the merest handful of men in any generation. Even in our own age - the age of transport - comparatively few people have been to sea. The vast majority can never do so, for they live too far away from it. I read in the news paper the other day an appeal by a Leeds clergyman for funds to enable him to send to the seaside children in that city Who had never seen the sea. Yet the coast is within a train journey of an hour and a half! About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from White Shadows in the South Seas It is not given to every man to start on the quest of the rainbow's end. Such fantastic pursuit is not for him who is bound by ties of home and duty and fortune to-make. He has other adventure at his own door, sterner fights to wage, and, perhaps, higher rewards to gain. Still, the ledgers close sometimes on a sigh, and by the cosiest fireside one will see in the coals pictures that have nothing to do with wedding rings or balances at the bank. His historical romances of frontier and Indian life in the early American days created a unique form of American literature. Before embarking on his career as a writer, Cooper served in the U.S. Navy, which greatly influenced many of his novels. The novel that launched his career was The Spy, tale of espionage in Revolutionary War. He also wrote numerous sea stories, and his best-known works are five historical novels of the frontier period known as the Leatherstocking Tales. Among his most famous works is the Romantic novel The Last of the Mohicans.
