A Buffalo Hunter. 253 CHAPTER XII. A buffalo hunter--Singular native customs at royal marriages-- Difficulty of continuing our journey--A legion of rats--We encounter Blangellas--Peaceful arrangements--I shoot a hippopotamus--We proceed on our journey to the mountains of Messuate--Joy of the negroes on beholding the mountain of Lebombo. Arrival at Lourenco Marques. Towabds evening we arrived at a small kraal of only seven palhotas, inhabited by one family. This family consisted of a very old man, four women, and four children. The old man was extremely tall and thin, his skin shrunken and yellow. He must have been at least a hundred years old, yet he walked briskly though he stooped slightly. This kraal, although it was so small, looked like a general store for the hunters of some large city, judging from the immense quantity of horns which I saw both outside and inside the huts. From the roof of each palhota depended a circle of horns of the gazelle, fallow deer, and different varieties of wild goats, completed in front by two enormous buffalo horns. Soon after entering the kraal, this old man, who was sitting at the entrance of one of the huts, rose up and came to greet me. On my asking him whether any men besides himself lived in this kraal, he replied that he had a son and a grandson, but that they had both gone hunting. I was glad to learn this, as we should then have some one to guide us on the road. The old man then asked me whether I iutended to remain in this kraal for the night, and, on my replying in the affirmative, he bade one of the women go and get four palhotas ready for our use. I then asked him if he could give me any news concerning the war with Mahueoe. The information which I elicited from this old man was very...

Book Women in African Colonial Histories

Download or read book Women in African Colonial Histories written by Jean Allman and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2002-04-01 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How did African women negotiate the complex political, economic, and social forces of colonialism in their daily lives? How did they make meaningful lives for themselves in a world that challenged fundamental notions of work, sexuality, marriage, motherhood, and family? By considering the lives of ordinary African women -- farmers, queen mothers, midwives, urban dwellers, migrants, and political leaders -- in the context of particular colonial conditions at specific places and times, Women in African Colonial Histories challenges the notion of a homogeneous "African women's experience." While recognizing the inherent violence and brutality of the colonial encounter, the essays in this lively volume show that African women were not simply the hapless victims of European political rule. Innovative use of primary sources, including life histories, oral narratives, court cases, newspapers, colonial archives, and physical evidence, attests that African women's experiences defy static representation. Readers at all levels will find this an important contribution to ongoing debates in African women's history and African colonial history.

Before the phenomenal success of The President's Keepers, he spent years tracking down apartheid death squads. Into the Heart of Darkness, first released in 1997, was the result of this work. Despite official denials and cover-ups, the rumours of apartheid's death squads have now been proved to be all too real. Hundreds of anti-apartheid activists were killed and thousands tortured by a group of bizarre assassins, the foot soldiers of apartheid's secret war. Jacques Pauw has been more closely involved with apartheid's killers than any other journalist. For more than seven years, he has hunted them down and become a witness to their secret and forbidden world. Into the Heart of Darkness will take you on a journey into the minds and lives of the men who went out to kill and kill again. What caused these souls to become so dark and guided them to so much evil?
