Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Hunt on Snow Shoes "Hark!" A low, wailing sound came faintly through the forest of oaks and pines, and borne on the wintry air, reached the ears of the two brothers who, on this moonlight night many years ago, were gliding swiftly over the gleaming surface of the Kennebec, on their ringing skates, which had already carried them full ten miles from their home. It was Clarence Landon, the elder, who had uttered the exclamation that arrested the laughter and conversation of himself and Sydney. On the instant they ceased striking out, and the rasping whir of the keen-edged steel grew softer and still softer, until the two came to a stand, side by side. Still they spoke not, but stood looking and listening. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On Snow-Shoes to the Barren Grounds: Twenty-Eight Hundred Miles After Musk-Oxen and Wood-Bison And why I turned my face towards a country which seemed to hold naught for the traveller but hardship? Well - certainly to hunt musk-ox, the most inaccessible game in the world, and to look upon his habitat at the period of its uttermost desolation; certainly also to study the several tribes of Indians through which I must pass on my way to the Barren Grounds; and en route to hunt wood bison, undoubtedly now become the rarest game in the world; Possibly, too, I went that I might for a time escape the hum and routine sordidness of the City, and breathe air which was not surcharged with convention and Civilization. If others, like him, should regard it as desirable to search out a private boarding-place, it will be by no means difficult to accomplish that end. Along the main road, between Bloomingdale and St. Regis Lake, are scattered numerous farm-houses, in almost any one of which comfortable accommodation could probably be had. The village of Bloomingdale itself contains a good-sized inn and several dwellings of more pretentious appearance than those on the road. There are two or three stores in the place, a telegraph station, post-office, public school, and church. Certain advantages are gained if one prefers the seclusion of a private house by living on the stage road, although pleasant quarters can, no doubt, be found in many of the more remote houses.
