Book excerpt: "The Silla Kingdom, which flourished in Korea from 57 B.C. to 935 A.D., is known for its intricately crafted ornaments, many in resplendent gold, and for the creation of prominent Buddhist temples. Silla focuses on the striking artistic traditions of the Old and Unified Silla Kingdoms (4th-8th century), and is the first publication in English to explore the artistic and cultural legacy of this ancient realm. Among the topics explored are Korea's position as the eastern culmination of the Silk Road in the first millennium A.D. and the character and evolution of Buddhism, as illuminated by objects from major monuments, temples, and tombs. The book also presents new research about Silla's ancient capital, Gyeongju, which is known for the Gyerim-ro Dagger, as well as the pottery, glass, and beads discovered in tombs located there." -- Publisher's description.
Download or read book Korea written by James Hoare and published by Oxford, England : Clio Press. This book was released on 1997 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The two Korean states are heirs to a great artistic and cultural tradition. Moreover, they share a long, sometimes bitter historical experience, culminating in forty years of Japanese colonial rule. Although liberated in 1945, Korea was divided. Two states emerged, a communist North and an autocratic South. In 1950, the North failed in an attempt at reunification by force and the resultant Korean War intensified the hostility which continues to this day. Since the end of the war, South Korea has become one of the world's economic success stories. North Korea has been less successful, but attracts interest for its unique development as a Marxist state.

Download or read book A Representation of Nationhood in the Museum written by Sang-hoon Jang and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-01-20 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Representation of Nationhood in the Museum examines how the National Museum of Korea, as a national repository of material culture and the state’s premier exhibition facility, has shaped and been shaped by Korean nationalism. Exploring the processes by which the museum has discovered and interpreted material culture, using concepts of ethnic nationalism in the historical and political contexts of South Korean society, the book analyses how this nationalist interpretation has regulated South Koreans’ understanding of their material culture. Issues considered include: cultural and political relations with China; Japanese colonial rule, cultural imperialism and its legacy; the division of Korea since 1945; the Korean War and nation building since liberation in 1945; and domestic political upheavals, including military coups in 1961 and in 1979. Demonstrating that authoritarian regimes’ emphasis on the promotion of national unity drove national museums to establish national identity through material culture, Jang argues that international political and diplomatic factors also affect the process of the formation of national identity in a specific political context. Concerning itself with issues such as the relationship between politics and identity, museums and authoritarian regimes, this book should be essential reading for academics, researchers and postgraduate students in museum studies, nationalism studies, Asian studies and history departments.
