Book A HUMAN RELATIONS APPROACH TO MULTICULTURALISM IN K 12 SCHOOLS

Download or read book A HUMAN RELATIONS APPROACH TO MULTICULTURALISM IN K 12 SCHOOLS written by George Henderson and published by Charles C Thomas Publisher. This book was released on 2013-06-01 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Explicit in this book is the author’s belief that it is not enough to say that Americans live in culturally diverse and stratified communities in which educational opportunities are not distributed fairly; nor is it enough to reiterate that most educational opportunities are not based solely on students’ academic abilities. Rather, elementary and secondary school personnel must be involved in abating these problems. The book is not meant to be read passively by teachers and teacher candidates; it is intended to be a dialogue that encourages discussion and, when possible, action. Explicit throughout each chapter is the belief that how teachers teach a course matters as much as what is taught. Each chapter is written to achieve four major objectives: (1) to discuss key societal factors that positively or negatively affect the quality of instruction students receive in elementary and secondary schools; (2) to discuss selected racial and ethnic groups’ beliefs, attitudes, and behaviors that characterize teaching personnel, students, and parents; (3) to present seminal research studies and their implications for educating elementary and secondary students; and (4) to provide practical suggestions for abating or preventing selected human relation problems in schools. Chapters include: Challenges for Educators; Human Relations in Education; Caring About All Students; Teachers as Professional Helpers; Stress, Anxiety, and Coping; Parents Are People, Too; and Student Teachers. In addition, the text seeks to: (1) discuss educational reforms that served well in the past but must be altered or abandoned to fit current educational imperatives; (2) discuss a wide variety of issues, problems, and strategies for change that offer readers a balanced view of challenges affecting administrators, teachers, counselors, students, and parents; (3) employ a scaffolding, or spiral, approach to topics; and (4) offer special attention to the effects of race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, nationality, and family income on students, their parents, and teachers. Although the book is written primarily for students interested in pursuing careers as elementary or secondary school teachers, it should also be of value to experienced teachers, as well as school administrators, counselors, parents, and policy makers. The text may also complement and supplement other textbooks used in university courses focused on human relations-related topics.

Book excerpt: This text provides the philosophical foundation for multicultural teaching while offering practical workbook activities, exercises, games, and checklists for classroom application. Multicultural Education and Human Relations asks pre-service teachers to diagnose their present knowledge and skills, reflect on experiences, actively participate in exercises, discuss relevant theory and research, and integrate this information into their behavioral repertoires, they can then enter classroom situations from a background of first-hand awareness and experience. Book Multicultural Education as Social Activism

Download or read book Multicultural Education as Social Activism written by Christine E. Sleeter and published by SUNY Press. This book was released on 1996-01-01 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Connecting multicultural education with political issues of power and struggle, this book explores what multicultural education means to white people, given the unequal racial power relations in the U.S. and worldwide. It examines connections between race, gender, and social class, particularly as these connections play out for white women. While taking a feminist perspective, the author is also wary of the power white middle class women exercise in defining what counts as gender issues. Throughout the book, Sleeter argues that multicultural education was born in political struggle and can never meaningfully be disconnected from politics. Ultimately the quest for schooling for social justice is a political quest rather than a technical issue.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book introduces multiculturalism and its relationship to education and schooling, while also highlighting current approaches to multicultural education and placing them in a broad comparative and international context. Through a comparative view that is both domestic and international, the book explores ethnicity, race, class, and education (kindergarten through higher education) as they interact to integrate populations, while also serving vested interests and enhancing group identity and status. The authors position multiculturalism as a political and social phenomena that affects and interacts with education and its institutions. To do this, they draw upon international cases as well as the history of segmentation and integration in the United States.

Book The Global Purpose Approach

Download or read book The Global Purpose Approach written by Tarece Johnson Ed.D. and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2018-02-15 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I created The Global Purpose Approach to help people gain the interest, knowledge, and skills needed for them to become more global-minded individuals. The idea for the book evolved from the need to enhance instruction in multicultural education so that people may be more knowledgeable, respectful, and appreciative of the geographies, languages, and cultures of people across the globe. The principles, content, and strategies that result comprise The Global Purpose Approachan instructional framework to introduce and integrate multiculturalism in schools, classrooms, private corporations, public agencies, and individuals daily lives. The purpose of The Global Purpose Approach is to foster multicultural awareness and education by helping to understand, respect, and appreciate similarities and differences across cultures. It consists of six guiding principlespurpose, environment, observation, perspective, language, and exploration (PEOPLE)together with an outline (NO FEAR) and resources for interactive and immersive learning of the core elements of culture. The intended impact of The Global Purpose Approach is to develop people who have enhanced knowledge and appreciation of diverse cultures and who can, therefore, interact and contribute innovatively in an interconnected, global society. Human resource professionals, organizational leaders, school districts, and teachers may use this book as a guide to integrate multicultural education in their departments, organizations, school systems, and classrooms. It also allows for educators to easily adapt the approach to fit their curriculum requirements and existing teaching plans and to implement it within their daily teaching. In this way, The Global Purpose Approach can be seen as a way to strengthen current teaching practices by adopting a set of philosophies and utilizing activities to foster more globally connected, engaged citizens without the need to fully revise or change.
