But the son, for whose sake the story was chiefly written, knew all these common things for himself. He had been born in the midst of civil war and grew up in a clash and turmoil which wellnigh led to the very disintegration of the kingdom of France; but through the fury of public affairs all the ordinary things went on, all the daily routine of living, and the only regret is that the writer of the memoirs thought these homely matters so little worth relating. Thus many things remain Obscure for present-day readers which were too obvious to need a mention nearly four hundred years ago, and it is not only the language, with its page long sentences and use of now Obsolete words, which may present difliculties to them. Something more than translation is needed for those who have made no special study of the time, some slight aid to render the memoirs as vivid in modern days as they were to those who had lived through the scenes they describe. Stillman explores this paradox in relation to Philip Sidney's Defence of Poesy, the first Renaissance text to argue for the preeminence of poetry as an autonomous form of knowledge in the public domain. Offering a fresh interpretation of Sidney's celebration of fiction-making, Stillman locates the origins of his poetics inside a neglected historical community: the intellectual elite associated with Philip Melanchthon (leader of the German Reformation after Luther), the so-called Philippists. As a challenge to traditional Anglo-centric scholarship, his study demonstrates how Sidney's education by Continental Philippists enabled him to dignify fiction-making as a compelling form of public discourse-compelling because of its promotion of powerful new concepts about reading and writing, its ecumenical piety, and its political ambition to secure through natural law (from universal 'Ideas') freedom from the tyranny of confessional warfare. Intellectually ambitious and wide-ranging, this study draws together various elements of contemporary scholarship in literary, religious, and political history in order to afford a broader understanding of the Defence and the cultural context inside which Sidney produced both his poetry and his poetics.

Phillippy emphasises the period's textual and cultural constructions of male and female subjects as predicated upon gendered approaches to death. She argues that while feminine grief is condemned as immoderately emotional by male reformers, the same characteristic that opens women's mourning to censure enable its use as a means of empowering women's speech.
