Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Huguenot Family in the XVI Century: The Memoirs of Philippe Du Mornay, Soeur Du Plessis Marly Those who read them in the present day could Often wish for more details, for a fuller mention of the little things which more than anything else transform the past into the present. But the son, for whose sake the story was chiefly written, knew all these common things for himself. He had been born in the midst of civil war and grew up in a clash and turmoil which wellnigh led to the very disintegration of the kingdom of France; but through the fury of public affairs all the ordinary things went on, all the daily routine of living, and the only regret is that the writer of the memoirs thought these homely matters so little worth relating. Thus many things remain Obscure for present-day readers which were too obvious to need a mention nearly four hundred years ago, and it is not only the language, with its page long sentences and use of now Obsolete words, which may present difliculties to them. Something more than translation is needed for those who have made no special study of the time, some slight aid to render the memoirs as vivid in modern days as they were to those who had lived through the scenes they describe. Book The Huguenot A Tale of the French Protestants I III

Download or read book The Huguenot A Tale of the French Protestants I III written by G. P. R. James and published by anboco. This book was released on 2016-09-10 with total page 744 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Huguenots are member of a French Protestant denomination with origins in the 16th or 17th centuries. Historically, Huguenots were French Protestants inspired by the writings of John Calvin (Jean Cauvin in French) in the 1530s, who became known by that originally derisive designation by the end of the 16th century. The majority of Huguenots endorsed the Reformed tradition of Protestantism. Hans J. Hillerbrand in his Encyclopedia of Protestantism: 4-volume Set claims the Huguenot community reached as much as 10% of the French population on the eve of the St. Bartholomew's Day massacre, declining to 7-8% by the end of the 16th century, and further after heavy persecution began once again with the Revocation of the Edict of Nantes by Louis XIV of France.

Book Pierre s Journey to Florida

Download or read book Pierre s Journey to Florida written by Thomas N. Tozer and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2012-08-02 with total page 141 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This historical fiction book is about the life adventures of Pierre de Bré, a young French Huguenot, at the time when European and Native Americans first came into contact with each other. His family and community were massacred by the Spanish and, as a consequence, he lived among the Timucuan Indians of Florida for several years before returning to France. It is a story of harsh times in Europe - a time with divisive, indeed tumultuous religious and political problems, and a time when exploration of the unknown parts of the world was so exciting, romantic, and adventurous. The book should be of interest to anyone fascinated by the original Native American culture or with a curiosity of the historic events leading to the settling of North America. The author’s motivation for writing this book came from four distinct sources: a visit to St. Augustine, Florida, where he became captivated with the early contribution of the French Huguenots to the founding of the United States; knowledge that Huguenot ancestors on his mother’s side came to the United States from France in the late 17th century; visiting most of the places in France and Florida mentioned in the book; and going to elementary and high school with numerous Native Americans.

Download or read book Story of the Huguenots written by F. A. Mann and published by . This book was released on 2017-06-19 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Huguenots are French Protestants, a product of turmoil during the early sixteenth century. The Huguenot community oscillated between celebration and persecution in France. On August 24, 1572, while celebrating Saint Bartholomew's Day, thousands of Huguenots were massacred. After decades of fighting occurred, an edict of peace was issued, which largely remained in place until October 18, 1685 when Louis XIV revoked the Edict of Nantes. Many Huguenots fled France, then, or before, to escape persecution. Some came to the United States, with the majority deciding to reside in Massachusetts, New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and South Carolina. Others settled in England, Sweden, Denmark, and Switzerland. This work offers an interesting account of the Huguenots in Florida and their interactions with the local populace. This edition is dedicated to Sam Hier, who knows about communities in strife.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The French Reformation seemed well-placed to succeed: there was a vigorous pre-reform movement, an apparent welcome for the work of French-speaking reformers in many quarters despite severe persecution, and the beginnings of a powerful and well-organized church structure. Yet, French protestantism remained the faith only of a minority. This book seeks to understand this apparent contradiction and to explain why protestantism failed to take hold in France.
