This book was released on 2018-10-07 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Condenses History of the Mexican War and Its Glorious Results Since the printing of this book it has come to my knowledge that comrade James C. Carleton, secre tary of the National Association of Mexican War Veterans of Bedford, Indiana, under-ranks me in age 14 days. He was born on the 17th of June, 1882, while I saw the light first on the 3rd of June of the same year. This knocks the conceit out of me as to being the youngest veteran of the Mexican War, and I take my hat off to my dear young com rade Carleton, late of the 5th Regiment Indiana Volunteers, Colonel Lane, and I am relegated to a back seat. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mexican War IT has been wisely remarked by a distinguished American statesman, that the commencement of the Mexican War was the opening of a new volume of American history. Nations, like individuals, are often borne along in their progress, without pausing to consider the particular acts which are to shape and control their future destiny; and perhaps there is no subject on which the public mind is less likely to act with caution and deliberation than on the momentous question of peace or war. Book The Mexican War by an English Soldier

Download or read book The Mexican War by an English Soldier written by George Ballentine and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-30 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mexican War, by an English Soldier: Comprising Incidents and Adventures in the United States and Mexico With the American Army The writers of both classes have "cast discreetly into shade" whatever would "offend the eye" of the readers they sought to appreciate. As a partial remedy for the evil complained of by the gallant officer above referred to, the publishers put forth the present volume. If it does not rise to the dignity of history, it at least partakes of that faithfulness of record and clearness of detail which give history its value. The author is manifestly superior to that class of his countrymen ordinarily found in the rank and file of an army, in intelligence, in education, in observation, in descriptive and narrative power, and in candor and liberality of sentiment. Something of foreign misapprehension, possibly some degree of foreign preference or prejudice, may be found in his pages; and it is by no means improbable that some of his criticisms upon men and events may be unjust; but there is throughout the volume an evident desire to be just as well as independent, both in criticism and in narration. I learned the carpenter trade in Uniontown, Fayette county, and in 1844 I went to Lexington, Lafayette county, Missouri, where I followed my trade up to the time of my enlistment, on the sixth day of June, 1846, at which time I became a member of Company B., First Missouri Cavalry, Captain Wil liam Walton, in the regiment commanded by Colo nel Doniphan, and a part of The Army of the West, under General Kearney. After being mus tered out of service I returned to my home, near Latrobe, Westmoreland county, this state, where I have since resided. Quisenberry, the author of this series of the State Historical Society, republished from the May Register, needs no introduction to the readers of Kentucky. For some years he has been known as one of the most charming writers the State has produced. His style is that of Macaulay - enlisting the attention of the reader at once, and holding it with the spell of his ele gant diction, and authentic presentation of the facts of history. In this account of the Mexican war he supplies a great want in Kentucky history. He has obtained data and facts for it, beyond the reach of the ordinary historian, having access to the Government records in the War Department at Washington, and upon these he has drawn for much information that will be new to our read ers, to whom the Mexican War is almost a for gotten chapter ln American history. There are a few survivors of the Mexican War now, and more than one of these has written to. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Address to the Veterans of the Mexican War Classic Reprint

Download or read book Address to the Veterans of the Mexican War Classic Reprint written by Charles Edward Pickett and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-10 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Address to the Veterans of the Mexican War The author of the following exposition was a soldier in the Mexican War, the field of such performance lying in California. A member of the Yerba Buena Volunteers, which Company he took a leading part in organizing, and was tendered the Captaincy, but declined it, preferring to serve as a private. The Company was recruited at this place, and acted, during the Winter of 1846-'7 under orders of Capt. J. B. Hull, of the United States sloop of war Warren, Hull being then titled "Governor and Commander-in-Chief of the Northern Department of California." The Company was not marched further than Santa Clara, and had but one engagement with the Hispano-California enemy, which, fortunately, proved bloodless; strategy, and a tender of the olive branch, securing us a victory. The hardest service rendered, was in standing guard, during the cold and rainy nights of that dreary Winter, in the outskirts of the little village of Yerba Buena, and scouting in vicinity - since, changing its name and somewhat grown. Though not attached to any Mexican Veteran Association, some members of the one here requested me to prepare an address for their anniversary, on the 14th of September, (taking of the City of Mexico by the American army in 1847); but such Association not having arranged for any public oratorical exercises, on that occasion, it is sent forth, somewhat amplified, to the Veterans throughout the Union, and to my fellow-citizens at large, through the medium of the multi-tongued types. Persons desirous of learning some condensed interesting history - a portion, hitherto, unpublished - and penned by a participant in much of it - should peruse this pamphlet. That it shall prove a valuable adjunct in aid of the Democratic party, must be attributed to the fact that the truth of history and glory of the American people, as revealed in its pages, lie upon that side. The two old parties should, like individuals, be judged by their general character and well established reputations - by their long antecedent records of actions and results. Settlement of the Oregon Question and war with Mexico opened a new volume in American history, of a grand and startling character. No speaker nor writer can treat upon that history without alluding to the position of such parties in it. But whilst the Republican speakers and writers are boldly falsifying this history, as well as assailing the whole proud record of the Democratic party, and defaming its illustrious representatives, anterior to our late sectional conflict, and so grossly misrepresenting the causes of that conflict, I rarely meet with the faintest defence of such record, or maintenance of the old Democratic creed. Instead, there has been a cowardly evasion of the subject, and an indirect admission of the justness of Republican allegations and arguments, false as they arc, by nearly all our side speakers and writers. Perusers of this pamphlet will find its author cannot be ranked among such lilly-livered defenders of its ancient faith, nor of those illustrious expounders of it. Book An Artillery Officer in the Mexican War 1846 7

Download or read book An Artillery Officer in the Mexican War 1846 7 written by Robert Anderson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-07-27 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Artillery Officer in the Mexican War, 1846-7: Letters of Robert Anderson, Captain 3rd Artillery, U. S. A HE story of the war which was carried on between the United States and Mexico during the years 1846, 1847, and 1848 constitutes an interesting and' brilliant chapter in the history of the nation. The record of the campaigns of the little American army makes also a distinctive contribution to the history of war. Since this war was brought to a close, more than half a century has passed. Two generations have come and gone, and the scenes and events of these campaigns now belong to history or to tradition, While the art of war itself has been very materially modified. The deeds of brave men belong, however, to all genera tions and a record of heroism and of patriotism serves to maintain the noblest impulses of human nature. The narrative in question falls naturally into three divisions: first, an analysis of the causes of the war, second, an account of the conduct of the campaign, and third, the actual consequences of the war. This book was released on 2017-11-23 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reminiscences of the War of the Rebellion, and of the Mexican War In the summer of 1861 three young patriot officers found themselves fellow-captives of war within the gloomy walls of the old tobacco-warehouse. In Richmond. One of these, Colonel J. R. Hurd, then Captain, was a Ken tuckian, faithful found among many faithless. The love of adventure had lured him in very early years from his home, and, reveling in the wild and semi-barbaric life of a frontiersman, he had become inured to hardship, peril and self-reliance. As we have mentioned, Colonels Hurd and Raynor had been companions and friends in childhood. They now became inseparable. Through a friend ly guard they obtained a few yards of calico, and some cotton and thread, with which they made a quilt, which, with a block of wood for their pillow, constituted their only bed. Mr. Murphy was regarded as a surgeon by the rebels, and was consequently allowed, under close surveillance, to visit the hospitals where our wounded were languishings He was thus enabled to con tribute very much not only to their relief, but_to the aid of his suffering com panions in the warehouse. In one of these hospitals he found Mrs. Major General Ricketts, who had heroically consented to become a prisoner-of - war that she might attend upon her wounded husband. This noble woman moved through the Sad wards of that hospital at Richmond an angel of mercy, an other Florence Nightingale, sharing the misery she attempted to alleviate. Officers and soldiers alike were cheered by her tender hand\ and her sympa thizing heart. She was obliged, writes Mr. Murphy, to quarter in the same room with her husband and some six other officers, with only a small shawl used as a screen to shield her from observation.
