Download or read book British Untouchables written by Mr Paul Ghuman and published by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.. This book was released on 2013-01-28 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dalits, formerly called 'untouchables', remain the most oppressed community in India, and indeed in South Asia and have, until recently, been denied human and civic rights. On emigration to the UK and other Western countries they faced a double disadvantage: caste discrimination and racial discrimination from 'white' society. However, in the late 1990s, second-generation Dalit professionals challenged their caste status and Brahmanism in the West and in South Asia. This work provides a major study on the issues facing the education of Dalit children and young people growing up in Britain. The book is based on extensive fieldwork and uses a qualitative research methodology, including in-depth interviews with parents, teachers and children, and detailed observations in homes, schools and places of worship e.g. gurdwaras. It offers a detailed view of areas such as socialisation of children, schooling and education, examination success, parental perceptions of education, bilingualism, acculturation patterns, cultural conflicts and caste and social identities. Central to this work, too, is a thorough introduction to the religious concepts that underpin the notion of 'untouchability' in Hinduism. This is a significant contribution to this under-researched community by a scholar who is one of the leading authorities on the education of South Asian children in Britain.

Book Two Tales of Crow and Sparrow

Download or read book Two Tales of Crow and Sparrow written by Alan Dundes and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 1997 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This provocative book by a leading folklorist offers a new analysis of caste in India, focusing on the rationale underlying the customs surrounding untouchability. Drawing on clues contained in two fascinating folktales, Alan Dundes goes beyond Dumont's classic Homo Hierarchicus in deconstructing the pervasive pollution complex that prevents millions of individuals from entering temples or drawing water from community wells. His graceful and erudite explanation of caste also illuminates the mysterious worship of the sacred cow as well as sati/suttee, or widow burning. The author concludes by relating caste to the theory of marginal survival, drawing on Gypsy concepts of pollution. This controversial book offers a fresh perspective for anyone interested in India, folklore, and psychoanlytic anthropology_a detailed case study documenting how folklore, as a source of native categories and symbols, can yield unique insights into the unconscious functioning of a culture through time. In this comprehensive textbook, renowned philosopher J. N. Mohanty examines the range of Indian philosophy from the Sutra period through the 17th century Navya Nyaya. Classical Indian Philosophy is divided into three parts that cover epistemology, metaphysics, and the attempt to transcend the distinction between subject and object. Mohanty focuses on the major concepts and problems dealt with in Indian philosophy, including ethics, social philosophy, law, and aesthetics. Students of Indian philosophy at every level will find this a rich and rewarding text.

Book If Only God Used His Brain

Download or read book If Only God Used His Brain written by Snofla Sacul and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2011-08-15 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In order to understand this provocative article as my personal analogy, that is, concerning my outlook on life and religion, especially my critical view referring to the creation of our universe and life, including all diseases here on earth. I will try my best to present my analogy in a most rational way, explaining all the short comings, in reference to our life including my belief in the Judeo - Catholic religion. I will especially scrutinize the Judeo-Christian religion, to which I was introduced in my childhood. Unfortunately, history and my passed life are now in a distant passed. Yes, I soon realized, that I had to change my stalemated view on life to which I was introduced in my childhood. I had to bring it to a platform of a new concept to view Nature and religion from a different angle, to a platform of reality. As for myself, I sense a negative opinion as to my most open and forward references concerning religion and God. Some may call me “The Diablo’s Incarnates” Surely; each one of us has the privilege to his own opinion. This book has no intention to change anyone’s mind. Its porpoise is to expose the hidden truth, which may never be exposed to you otherwise. I also would like to point out, that in many instances I have repeated myself only to accentuate and highlight the subject in a given paragraph. In anticipated criticism and religious hate I am asking to stay anonymous for various reasons. If truth is the reason to hate and cause mental unhappiness, then one must have objection to the existence of God, as God is the only truth!

Book excerpt: First Published in 1963, Holy Mother presents the life and teachings of an extraordinary saint of modern India, who lived outwardly the life of an ordinary Hindu woman. Sri Sarada Devi (1853-1920) was brought up in poverty but also in contentment. She gained her sainthood not through unusual austerities, but through regular practice of prayer and meditation, utter devotion in the service of her husband, and discharging her duties towards her demanding worldly-minded relatives. Yet her spiritual experiences were as deep as those of Sri Ramakrishna (1836-1886). Her life was a demonstration of the inner peace that comes from communication with God, even to one who is occupied with the activities of the world. Sri Ramakrishna trained her for her future role as his spiritual successor and through her he demonstrated the Motherhood of God. Her advent acted as a leaven silently raising the newly awakened consciousness of womanhood everywhere. This book is indispensable for scholars and researchers of Hinduism, religion, Indian philosophy, Indian culture, and heritage.

  • Pages : 489 pages

Download or read book Exiles written by Michael Frost and published by Baker Books. This book was released on 2006-08-01 with total page 489 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exiles: Living Missionally in a Post-Christian Culture presents a biblical, Christian worldview for the emergent church--people who are not at home in the traditional church or in the secular world. As exiles of both, they must create their own worldview that integrates their Christian beliefs with the contemporary world. Exiles seeks to integrate all aspects of life and decision-making and to develop the characteristics of a Christian life lived intentionally within emerging (postmodern) culture. It presents a plea for a dynamic, life-affirming, robust Christian faith that can be lived successfully in the post-Christian world of twenty-first century Western society. This book will present a Christian lifestyle that can be lived in non-religious categories and be attractive to not-yet Christians. Such a worldview takes ecology and politics seriously. It offers a positive response to the workplace, the arts, feminism, mystery and worship. Exiles seeks to develop a framework that will allow Christians to live boldly and courageously in a world that no longer values the culture of the church, but does greatly value many of the things the Bible speaks positively about. This book suggests that there us more to being a Christian than meets the eye. It explores the secret, unseen nooks and crannies in the life of a Christian and suggests that faith is about more than church attendance and belief in God. Written in a conversational, easy-to-read style, Exiles is aimed at church leaders, pastors and laypersons and seeks to address complex issues in a simple manner. It includes helpful photographs and diagrams.

Book MULK RAJ ANAND

    Book Details:
  • Author : KETAKI GOSWAMI
  • Publisher : PHI Learning Pvt. Ltd.
  • Release : 2009-02-16
  • ISBN : 8120337638
  • Pages : 97 pages

Download or read book MULK RAJ ANAND written by KETAKI GOSWAMI and published by PHI Learning Pvt. Ltd.. This book was released on 2009-02-16 with total page 97 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today, Indian writing in English or Indo-Anglian writing has certainly come of age, with the novel having a pride of place and names such as Salman Rushdie, V.S. Naipaul, Vikram Seth, Kiran Desai, Amitav Ghosh, Arundhati Roy, and Arvind Adiga prominently figuring in the list. But the credit for placing Indo-Anglian writing on a high pedestal should go to earlier writers like Rabindranath Tagore, Mulk Raj Anand, R.K. Narayan and Raja Rao. Among these, Mulk Raj Anand has a unique place because of the ideals and ideas he espoused through his novels. This concise book deals with Anand’s three early novels — Coolie, Untouchable, and Two Leaves and a Bud — and a few short stories, which were conceived, written and published during the colonial period — the Raj. It also includes critical essays on such themes as Life and Art, Themes and Applications, Anand and His Use of Language and a study on the Women in Anand’s Short Stories. Dr. Ketaki Goswami, with her erudition and scholarship and research findings on Mulk Raj Anand’s works, brings out the quintessential Anand — the messiah of the downtrodden, the unwanted and the unloved. For, Anand intricately weaves through his novels, the theme of exploitation and the apathy, the indifference and the condescending attitude of the affluent towards the marginalized sections of the society whose pangs and pains wrenched his heart. Anand’s life-long quest was to show love and compassion to the poor as also to alleviate their pains and give a magic touch to the downtrodden to make their lives bearable. In all the three novels and the short stories discussed in the book, the author shows that the novelist believed that the Summum bonum of a human being is living a life with dignity which has been denied to the lower castes and the outcasts — the lower dregs of humanity — because of the repulsive attitude of the rich. Being a humanist of the highest order, Anand concerns himself with the whole man, his development, sense of dignity and decency in living. This book should be extremely useful and invaluable to the students of English Literature who opt for the paper on Indian Writing in English. The academic community also will find reading the book highly interesting, stimulating and ennobling.

Book Divine Enterprise

Download or read book Divine Enterprise written by Lise McKean and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 1996-05-15 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through shrewd marketing and publicity, Hindu spiritual leaders can play powerful roles in contemporary India as businessmen and government officials. Focusing on the organizations and activities of Hindu ascetics and gurus, Lise McKean explores the complex interrelations among religion, the political economy of India, and global capitalism. In this close look at the business of religion, McKean traces the ideological and organizational antecedents to the Hindu nationalist movement. The Indian state's increasing patronage of Hindu institutions makes competition for its support greater than ever. Using materials from guru's publications, the press, and extensive field research, McKean examines how participation by upper-caste ruling class groups in the Divine Life Society and other Hindu organizations further legitimates their own authority. With a remarkable selection of photographs and advertisements showing icons of spirituality used to sell commodities from textiles to cement to comic books, McKean illustrates the pervasive presence of Hindu imagery in India's burgeoning market economy. She shows how gurus popularize Hindu nationalism through imagery such as the goddess, Mother India, and her martyred sons and daughters.

Book Future of the Prophetic

  • ISBN : 1451472374

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Future of the Prophetic argues that in the persistence of the prophetic, the legacy of the ancient Jewish world spread beyond the boundaries of the Jewish community and took root throughout the world. As a way of wisdom and hope, this dual rooting—its grounding in the tradition of ancient Israel and its uncontained itinerancy—unveils a startling but promising new context: a re-presentation of the prophetic from outside the Jewish world to the Jewish community. The new situation of contemporary prophetic challenges the fixed religious landscape by reversing traditional boundaries, eschewing power and privilege, and brokering peace through solidarity and common struggle in ecumenical and interfaith contexts.
