This book was released on 2018-03-06 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Virginia, for the Use of Schools In the preparation of this volume for the use of schools, I have been actuated by an earnest desire to place before her youth a faithful record of the past history of the old Mother of States and Statesmen, a record so full of honor that her children may well be proud of it. I have attempted no dry details, no po litical dissertations, but have adopted the familiar style of a story from the stores of incident, in which the past of Virginia is so rich, such narrations as would be most apt to stamp upon the youthful mind the graver facts of history, interspersing such explana tions as were absolutely necessary with a simplicity and clearness which will I hope, render them easy of com prehension even to the youngest student of these pages. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Virginia: A Brief d104 Book for Schools In this volume, I have endeavored to present in a clear and connected manner the leading facts in the history of Virginia. The materials have been drawn from the most reliable authorities, and much time has been spent in comparing them so as to render the narrative as accurate as possible. In the colonial period, the richness of the sources of information proved a continual embarrassment; and I found myself compelled to leave out many, interesting incidents, to prevent the book from exceeding the well-defined limits within which a state history for school use should be kept. Virginia was the cradle of the English race in America, and for this reason her history is of more than ordinary interest. Besides this, the great variety of romantic and important events that have taken place within her borders, the immortal characters that have been nurtured upon her soil, and the unswerving manner in which her people have always contended for their rights, render her history specially worthy of being studied. Book Makers of Virginia History Classic Reprint

Download or read book Makers of Virginia History Classic Reprint written by J. A. C. Chandler and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-16 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Makers of Virginia History Virginia has been called the Mother of States and of Statesmen - a compliment justly due the Old Dominion. In this little book an effort has been made to give biographical sketches of some of those great leaders who have placed Virginia in the forefront of American states. One great difficulty, however, has presented itself to the author in preparing these sketches: the impossibility of treating the many great men whom our state has produced. When we consider, in ad dition to those who are treated here, such names as Morgan the Thunderbolt, Wythe, Giles, the Barbours, Cary, Carrington, the many Lees, Doddridge, Baldwin, Tazewell, Taylor, the Masons, Stewart, Leigh, Grayson and scores of others, there seems to be no end to Virginia's distinguished sons. Each locality in the state undoubtedly has some citizen who can truly rank as a maker of Virginia history, though his name is not men tioned in this book. Our purpose, therefore, has been to select only a few characters in the different periods of our history, and to narrate the chief events in their lives in such a way as to give the story of Virginia history from 1607 to the present day. We believe that the best way to teach V.rginia history is by holding up before the boys and girls the deeds of those men who have done so much in the making of our history. Book Stories From Virginia History for the Young Classic Reprint

Download or read book Stories From Virginia History for the Young Classic Reprint written by Mary Tucker Magill and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stories From Virginia History, for the Young In sending out this little book, I find myself much interested in the teachers and pupils who will use it, and am impelled to write a word to my Fellow Teachers. I have tried to make my language as simple as possible, but I really do not like the books in words of three or four letters. Children should be taught language, and if the teacher will explain the meaning of the words to the class, taking them in connection with the rest of the sentence, they will be much more easily remembered than when studied in the columns of a dictionary. I would also suggest that the children be encouraged to tell the stories in their own language. They will thus learn to express themselves with ease and fluency. In the sketches of Virginians, I am greatly impressed with the salutary lessons their lives contain; young children catch so readily at things of that kind. Many a boy will dream of being a Patrick Henry, a Washington, an honest man like Monroe, or a hero like Lee or Jackson.
