Download or read book The Walter Scott Publishing Company written by John R. Turner and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 656 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1882, Walter Scott, a successful businessman with little formal education, found himself the surprised owner of a nearly bankrupt publishing company. Scott had agreed to act as mortgagor for the growing Tyne Publishing Company, but it soon became apparent that Tyne's programme of expansion was too ambitious - the company was hopelessly overcommitted. Scott appointed David Gordon, a dynamic Scotsman, as manager, and the Walter Scott Publishing House was born. Gordon began to improve the list by adding series: the Canterbury Poets Series, the Camelot Classics Series, the Great Writers Series, and the Contemporary Science Series. The company later published Tolstoy and Ibsen translations, as well as works by Bernard Shaw, Robert Blatchford and George Moore.

Download or read book Wendy written by Walter Scott and published by Drawn & Quarterly. This book was released on 2022-02-10 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Walter Scott’s Wendy comics have become a critical sensation, with rave reviews in The New Yorker and The Guardian, and an appearance in the Best American Comics anthology. Learn Wendy’s origin story as Scott hilariously plumbs millennial culture, creative ennui, and the nepotism of the art world’s institutions. Wendy’s an aspiring artist in a party city, and she’s in a rut. She spends her time snorting mdma in gallery bathrooms and watching Nurse Jackie reruns on her laptop while hungover. So when she’s accepted into the prestigious Flojo Island residency, Wendy vows to buckle down and get working. But during the remote, woodsy residency, Wendy and her collaborator/bff Winona put on a performance piece that becomes the centre of an art world controversy, and so Wendy returns to Montreal, getting a job in a coffee shop to make ends meet. With Wendy, Scott launches the Wendyverse, brimming with painfully relatable characters like the back-stabbing frenemy Tina, the name-dropping Paloma, the cool drummer Wendy obsesses over, Jeff, and of course, our treasured Wendy, the hot mess we can’t live without. In blunt, laugh out loud funny vignettes with perfect punchlines, Scott illuminates the opacity of artspeak and the ceaseless anxieties plaguing a largely privileged generation.

Download or read book A History of British Publishing written by John Feather and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2003-09-02 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive history (first published in 1987) covers the whole period in which books have been printed in Britain. Though Gutenberg had the edge over Caxton, England quickly established itself in the forefront of the international book trade. The slow process of copying manuscripts gave way to an increasingly sophisticated trade in the printed word which brought original literature, translations, broadsheets and chapbooks and even the Bible within the purview of an increasingly broad slice of society. Powerful political forces continued to control the book trade for centuries before the principle of freedom of opinion was established. In the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries the competition from pirated USA editions - where there were no copyright laws - provided a powerful threat to the trade. This period also saw the rise of remaindering, cheap literature, and many other 'modern' features of the trade. The author surveys all these developments, bringing his history up to the present age.

Download or read book Walter Scott At 250 written by Caroline McCracken-Flesher and published by EUP. This book was released on 2023-02-18 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At 250, Walter Scott points toward our possible futures. Scott, although we necessarily look on his times as past, of course experienced them as present. His times were times of crisis. Scott, then, has much to share in the experience, narration, anticipation and response to change as a condition of life - a condition our era, with its existential challenges to climate, to public health, to civilization knows only too well. In Scott at 250, major scholars foreground the author as theorist of tomorrow - as the surveyor of the complexities of the present who also gazes, as we do, toward an anxious and hopeful future.
