Book The Shenandoah Valley and Virginia 1861 to 1865

Download or read book The Shenandoah Valley and Virginia 1861 to 1865 written by Sanford C. Kellogg and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-01 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Shenandoah Valley and Virginia, 1861 to 1865: A War Study No section of the United States furnishes a fuller picture of the extraordinary operations of two American armies, pitted against each other for four long years, than does the beautiful "Valley of Virginia," from Harper's Ferry south to Staunton. Its most important city, Winchester, in the lower valley, was occupied or abandoned sixty-eight times by the troops of both armies, as has been said by men of the period of 1861 to 1865, still living there. Indeed, that city changed commanders so frequently and so suddenly that it became customary for the inhabitants to ascertain each morning, before leaving their dwellings, which flag was flying - the Stars and Stripes or the Stars and Bars. Aside from its superb location, framed in by the Blue Ridge on the east and the Alleghenies on the west, the bottom lands watered by the two branches of the Shenandoah on either side of the main valley, it produced wonderful crops of grain and droves of horses, cattle and swine, proving a bountiful granary to either army that occupied it. Book History of Wetzel County West Virginia Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2017-11-02 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Wetzel County, West Virginia The History of vvetzel County runs from the year of 1772 to the present time. The author has used great pains in securing the most important events during that time, and has succeeded as far as the interesting matter is concerned, though there may be a few incidents left out for the want of data. The most im portant ones have been secured. There may be incidents in the history of the county that would not only speak bad of the morality of the county, but would bring back remembrances of unhappy days, and things that would sadden the pages of Wet zel's History. Wetzel county for years has been suffering with a'name that she does not deserve, and she is gradually blotting it out. In the history of the county there are a great many men whose lives should have been mentioned in the book but were not, from the fact that the author could not secure anything concerning them. The author has put-in four months in se curing information and in writing this history. It does not require very much of an education to write a book of this kind. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Scotch-Irish Settlers in the Valley of Virginia: Alumni Address at Washington College, Lexington, Va Our Alma Mater was born of the habitual esteem for learning among the Scotch Irish settlers of this Valley. It had a genial nurture in the classic taste and training of their pastors - hereditary exemplars for their people, not more in piety than in political virtue. Its primal dowry was a tribute from the Father of his country to patriotism and valor, so long and often illustrated under his own eye, from the fatal day of Braddock's defeat till Freedom's crowning con ict on the plains of Yorktown.
