He will read widely, ponder deeply, and tune his spirit with care to the task which he undertakes. Book American Military History Volume 1

Download or read book American Military History Volume 1 written by Army Center of Military History and published by . This book was released on 2016-06-05 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: American Military History provides the United States Army-in particular, its young officers, NCOs, and cadets-with a comprehensive but brief account of its past. The Center of Military History first published this work in 1956 as a textbook for senior ROTC courses. Since then it has gone through a number of updates and revisions, but the primary intent has remained the same. Support for military history education has always been a principal mission of the Center, and this new edition of an invaluable history furthers that purpose. The history of an active organization tends to expand rapidly as the organization grows larger and more complex. The period since the Vietnam War, at which point the most recent edition ended, has been a significant one for the Army, a busy period of expanding roles and missions and of fundamental organizational changes. In particular, the explosion of missions and deployments since 11 September 2001 has necessitated the creation of additional, open-ended chapters in the story of the U.S. Army in action. This first volume covers the Army's history from its birth in 1775 to the eve of World War I. By 1917, the United States was already a world power. The Army had sent large expeditionary forces beyond the American hemisphere, and at the beginning of the new century Secretary of War Elihu Root had proposed changes and reforms that within a generation would shape the Army of the future. But world war-global war-was still to come. The second volume of this new edition will take up that story and extend it into the twenty-first century and the early years of the war on terrorism and includes an analysis of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq up to January 2009.

This book was released on 2017-01-08 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Civil War in America, or the Slaveholders' Conspiracy: An Address But while thus gratefully declaring my gain from seven years' experience in this favored land, never was I so proud and glad to be a citizen of the United States, - never so resolved to uphold the Star-spangled Banner, - never so ready to give the best of life I have, in its defence, whether by tongue or pen, by counsel, or by deeds. For never was I so confident as now, that the Republic of the United States is a free nation, and that it is about to prove this fact conclusively to the civilized world. Together let us acknowledge, that the People of Great Britain and the People of the United States are really but two branches of one Great Nation, - one in blood and brain, in moral tendency and practical power, - one by a common parentage and close ties of kindred, - one by language, literature, arts, laws, religion, - one in relative duties to our race, - and one in Providential destiny. God grant that, we may ever become more closely united, in mutual recognition, sympathy and interchange of good. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Civil War in America: An Address Read at the Last Meeting of the Manchester, Union and Emancipation Society I went to the United States believing, I returned firmly convinced, that not democracy in America, but free Chris tianity in America, was the real key to the study of the people and their institutions. Democracy is a political arrangementfdealing, like all political arrangements, with the shallower interests of man. It would be reversing the order of causation to deduce from it the deeper parts of the character of the people. Book To the Immortal Name and Memory of George Washington

Download or read book To the Immortal Name and Memory of George Washington written by Louis Torres and published by . This book was released on 2010-09-01 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Washington Monument is one of the most easily recognized structures in America, if not the world, yet the long and tortuous history of its construction is much less well known. Beginning with its sponsorship by the Washington National Monument Society and the grudging support of a largely indifferent Congress, the Monument's 1848 groundbreaking led only to a truncated obelisk, beset by attacks by the Know Nothing Party and lack of secured funding and, from the mid-1850s, to a twenty-year interregnum. It was only 1n 1876 that a Joint Commission of Congress revived the Monument and entrusted its completion to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. In "To the Immortal Name and Memory of George Washington": The United States Corps of Engineers and the Construction of the Washington Monument, historian Louis Torres tells the fascinating story of the Monument, with a particular focus on the efforts of Lieutenant Colonel Thomas Lincoln Casey, Captain George W. Davis, and civilian Corps employee Bernard Richardson Green and the details of how they completed the construction of this great American landmark. The book also includes a discussion and images of the various designs, some of them incredibly elaborate compared to the austere simplicity of the original, and an account of Corps stewardship of the Monument up to its takeover by the National Park Service in 1933. First published in 1985. 148 pages, ill.

Book Destruction and Reconstruction Personal Experiences of the Late War

Download or read book Destruction and Reconstruction Personal Experiences of the Late War written by Richard Taylor and published by . This book was released on 2012-11-21 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of the United States, as yet unwritten, will show the causes of the "Civil War" to have been in existence during the Colonial era, and to have cropped out into full view in the debates of the several State Assemblies on the adoption of the Federal Constitution, in which instrument Luther Martin, Patrick Henry, and others, insisted that they were implanted. African slavery at the time was universal, and its extinction in the North, as well as its extension in the South, was due to economic reasons alone. The first serious difficulty of the Federal Government arose from the attempt to lay an excise on distilled spirits. The second arose from the hostility of New England traders to the policy of the Government in the war of 1812, by which their special interests were menaced; and there is now evidence to prove that, but for the unexpected peace, an attempt to disrupt the Union would then have been made. The "Missouri Compromise" of 1820 was in reality a truce between antagonistic revenue systems, each seeking to gain the balance of power. For many years subsequently, slaves-as domestic servants-were taken to the Territories without exciting remark, and the "Nullification" movement in South Carolina was entirely directed against the tariff.Anti-slavery was agitated from an early period, but failed to attract public attention for many years. At length, by unwearied industry, by ingeniously attaching itself to exciting questions of the day, with which it had no natural connection, it succeeded in making a lodgment in the public mind, which, like a subject exhausted by long effort, is exposed to the attack of some malignant fever, that in a normal condition of vigor would have been resisted. The common belief that slavery was the cause of civil war is incorrect, and Abolitionists are not justified in claiming the glory and spoils of the conflict and in pluming themselves as "choosers of the slain."

Book Cause and Probable Results of the Civil War in America

Download or read book Cause and Probable Results of the Civil War in America written by William Taylor and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-05 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cause and Probable Results of the Civil War in America: Facts for the People of Great Britain The chastisement is both retributive and disciplinary. In regard to discipline I may simply say, that no man, or corporation or nation can attain to humble permanent greatness without great struggles in the school of adversity. If they cannot stand the ordeal, they cannot reach the end to which it is a means. In regard to God's retributive dealing with the American people, it is generally admitted by all concerned, that as a nation we have been very ungrateful, haughty, and wicked in the sight of the Lord. We have sinned grievously against God and humanity, not only by our complicity with slavery, but in numerous ways besides. Proportionate to the light enjoyed, and the consequent responsibility involved, so is the guilt of disobedience; hence we may reasonably expect that the retributions of God to be visited upon the nation will be terribly severe. The Secessionists are the principal rod used by the Lord for the chastisement of the loyal states, not simply by the action of armies in the field, but also by all the humiliating concomitants of the war at home and abroad. Had the Federal armies been uniformly successful, the chastening purpose of God would not have been realized at all. Why, as late as last June I travelled extensively through the northern.
