This book was released on 2018-02-03 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Grammar-School History of the United States Long experience in public school work has afforded the author ample opportunity for appreciation of the needs of children and teachers in our academies and common schools, and the grammar school his tory OF the united states has been prepared with special reference to those needs. To write? A history free from sectional prejudice, brief and accurate in statement, though always attractive and interesting, and yet so simple in style as to be readily within the comprehension of the children who are to use it, has been the constant aim in its prepa ration. Only leading facts have been presented; but the effort has been to give these in such a way as to make a clear picture in the mind of the pupil, and to keep the thread of the story unbroken by needless details. Cause and effect are carefully traced, showing how each event is the result of preceding incidents, becoming in turn an active cause in the chain of following events. After an account of the early discoveries, the history of each of the English colonies to the beginning of the Revolution is concisely given. Then follows a description of the chief actions and results of that war, including an account of the condition of the country at its close and of the events which led to the adoption of the Federal Constitution. The development of the new government, and the rapid expansion of its territory, are described through successive presidential administra tions. The steps leading to secession are carefully traced through the sectional controversies prior to the civil war, in order that the princi ples by which the men of the South were actuated may be clearly understood. The war between the states is treated in a brief and impartial manner. The closing period contains an account of the development of the South and lvest, of our wonderful advancement in invention, and of our progress in literature and art. Book excerpt: Excerpt from New Grammar School History of the United States In that year N arvaez (nar - vali'-eth), excited by Pineda's ac counts of the Mississippi Indians and their golden orna ments, set forth with 400 men to conquer the north coast of the Gulf of Mexico. At Apalachee Bay he landed, and made a raid inland. On returning to the shore, he missed his ships, and after traveling westward on foot for a month, built five rude vessels, and once more put to sea. For six weeks the little eet hugged the shore, till it came to the mouth of the Mississippi, where two of the boats were upset and Narvaez was drowned. The rest reached the coast of Texas in safety. But famine and the tomahawk soon reduced the number of the survivors to four. These were captured by bands of wan dering Indians, were carried over eastern Texas and western Louisiana, till, after many strange adventures and vicissitudes, they met beyond the Sabine River.1 Protected by the fame they had won for sorcery, and led by one Cabeza de Vaca, they now wandered westward to the Rio Grande 2 (ree'-o grahn'-da) and on by Chihuahua (chee-wah'-wah) and Sonora to the Gulf of California, and by this to Culiacan, a town near the west coast of Mexico, which they reached in 1536. They had crossed the continent. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A School History of the United States This book is intended for use in the upper grammar grades and in the junior high school. Its authors have borne in mind the double fact that While American schools still retain - it is to be hoped will always retain - a wholesome variety in their detail of instruction, they are nevertheless approaching a national conformity in main features. Espe cially is this true in history. The time for a school course in American history truly nationalized, broadly speaking, both in matter and method has arrived. The recent discussions of the subject in the National Education Association, in the American Historical Association, and by a host of individual critics have cleared the atmosphere as never before. The World War has worked as a powerful solvent to precipitate a new consensus of opinion. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Our Republic: A History of the United States for Grammar Grades It is presumably the object of every author of such a book to show properly the trend of our country's devel opment - how colonies grew into States, and they in turn into a united nation; to show, furthermore, how the people have lived, how the methods of making a liveli hood have been changed by discoveries and inventions, producing new social conditions; and to set forth, in the course of such narrative, the acts of heroism and states manship that are conspicuous in our national biography. Presumably, too, school histories have been written to create an interest in the nation and the duties of citizen ship - to foster patriotism and a sense of civic duty; to fix standards of morality by a comparison of human deeds; and, lastly, to stimulate love of the study itself. These common ideals of the historian and the teacher are fundamental in the present book. But in offering to the schools of the United States a new book on American history, the authors have considered also certain other conditions to be met. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the United States for Schools The function of both the writer and the teacher of his tory is to explain the meaning of human life as revealed in the records of the past. In the case of both the historian and the teacher much depends upon a nice discrimination in choosing typical facts, for their nature rather than their number Should be the guiding principle. This is especially true in the teaching of history in grammar grades, where the purpose is not so much to acquire a considerable body of knowledge as to develop in the pupil an interest in history and a taste for historical reading. In this book care has been taken not only to select typical events but so to group them that their full value may be appreciated as causes or as results. Download or read book A History of the United States Classic Reprint written by William C. Doub and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-24 with total page 578 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the United States During recent years there has been much written and much said about making the study of history and civics in the ele mentary schools something more than committing to memory dates, facts and events. Many newspapers and educational journals and many of those educators Who talk publicly on school questions have criticised severely the results secured from the time devoted to history and civics in the grammar schools. The method used and the lack of proper preparation on the part of the teacher have been held responsible for the poor results secured in these subjects. It has been customary to hold the teacher responsible for the method used and for her poor preparation, and thus to place the entire blame on her. Many have promptly and justly replied that they cannot be expected to expend from two to three thousand dollars in securing a higher education for the purpose of receiving the small salaries paid in the elementary schools. They have also replied - and this is even more to the point - that not being specialists in history and civics, they cannot, With any degree of success, teach these subjects by the topical method When every grammar school history text-book in print adopts, almost entirely, the cut and-dried chronological-event method. In relation to all these conditions, special attention is called to the fact that in this book the topical treatment is used Without any reserve What ever. No teacher can use this book as a text-book and use any other than the topical method, and no pupil can study this book without becoming interested in the real spirit of our history and having cultivated in him the desire to perform to the best of his ability the duties of American citizenship. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from New American History for Grammar Schools: In Three Parts, I. From the Old World to the New; II. The Birth of the Nation; III. The Nation's Life and Progress But you must remember that so great a thing as the discovery of a new world was not accomplished by one man alone, nor was it accomplished in the single day when Columbus first saw land after his long voyage. Sometimes we' think of it as if a great curtain had been rolled away from before the eyes of Columbus, disclosing the whole continent of America; so that he had only to go home and tell the king of Spain that the New World was discovered. This is a very wrong idea. We must look back many years before the time of Columbus to find the beginning of the great work, and we must study on to a time many years after his death before we can say that Europe had really found America. Years of toil, great sums of money, the suffering and death of many brave men, were necessary before the work was done. And even then it took centuries more to find What the new continent was like, to settle it with white people, and to make it useful to the world. This book was released on 2017-11-29 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of American History for Elementary Schools Some sort of a first book on American history is now quite generally used in schools as a preparation for the more intelligent study of a larger and more formal text-book in the higher grammar grades. For beginners, a mere compilation of facts is dry and unsatisfactory. Such books have now given place, for the most part, to those prepared on a more attractive and judicious plan. The real aim in a first book should be to interest boys and girls in the history of their country, and to encourage them to cultivate a taste for further study and reading. This book is intended for use in the earlier grammar grades and to be preliminary to the study of a more advanced work in the higher grades. The author has also kept in mind the fact that the school life of many children is brief, and that all their instruction in Amer ican history must come from a text-book of this kind.
