Book North Carolina Disciples of Christ

Download or read book North Carolina Disciples of Christ written by Charles Crossfield Ware and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-27 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from North Carolina Disciples of Christ: A History of Their Rise and Progress, and of Their Contribution to Their General Brotherhood Disciples in North Carolina, it nevertheless has a much wider interest common to the entire Brotherhood. If the other states which have a valuable historic past would appoint a commission similar to that of the North Carolina brethren and gather all available material as accurately and as carefully as this has been done, it would then be possible to assemble in a two or three volume set a thoroughly dependable history of the Disciples of Christ. This would be a colossal undertaking, but one entirely possible of achievement. Thus there would be preserved for the centuries to come an accurate history of this great Church which in a few more years it will be impossible ever to compile without a joint effort such as this. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Church of the Atonement and the Chapel of the Cross, at Chapel Hill, North Carolina I think of the students Who Will worship here. For them this structure is more like home than any building on the campus. Here they will share in the precious things of family life. Here they will feel the invisible presence of loved ones, especially in the mystical fellowship of the Holy Communion. Here they will join in the refrain of favorite hymns or lift their hearts in prayerfamily devotion around the fireside altar.. We stand on the spot where students will make their life decisions and dedicate them selves to idealistic service. Already, in anticipation of the crises of youth that this new church will look upon, we feel that we stand on holy ground. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the Church of God: Eastern North Carolina The State of Eastern North Carolina has had a significant involvement in the Pentecostal movement and Church of God organization since its inception in the Twentieth Century movement. Therefore, it becomes important that data be researched and preserved as it relates to the Church of God. The state Council of Eastern North Carolina commissioned the State Centennial Committee which consists of the Reverend W. P. Pope, Jr., Millard Maynard, and L. L. Reeder. These men are to be commended for the excellent research material and data which they have completed. On behalf Of the State Council and Ministry of Eastern North Carolina, I express deep appreciation to Reverend W. P. Pope, Chairman, for his leadership and direction to Reverend Maynard and Reverend Reeder for their diligent involvement. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Synagogue and Jewish Church: A Congregational History of North Carolina Emigrating from the self-governing Jewish communities of their European homelands, the immigrants made a first break with a traditional society. When they debarked in Richmond, Bal timore, and Charleston, they found Jewish communities with Viable congregations. Moving. Into the agrarian hinterland, they made a second break from cornmunal constraints and rabbinic authority. The country Jew, Rabbi Edward Calisch of Richmond wrote in 1900, is in measure cut off from the house of his breth ren. Like the limb of a tree that no longer draws nourishment from a life-giving trunk.3 Kosher food and a minyan were avail able in Baltimore or Richmond, but not reliably in New Bern or Rocky Mount. Jewish religious life in North Carolina organized slowly, as was the case generally in the South. In 1861 there were only 21 congregations in the region, and only Baltimore had a rabbi with verifiable c'fedentials.4 Before the Civil War not one congregation existed in North Carolina.
