Book excerpt: Fairfax is surrounded by oak-draped glens that have enchanted many, including its early owner and namesake, Lord Charles Snowden Fairfax. The hereditary baron, whose family once owned much of Virginia, entertained guests in grand Southern style on his lovely estate known as Bird's Nest Glen. Later the home became Pastori's, the beloved local landmark hotel and restaurant visited by famous guests like Irving Berlin, who once serenaded diners from a piano perched on a tree house. The 1906 earthquake chased refugees from San Francisco across the bay, and new Fairfax subdivisions appeared, along with the Fairfax Incline Railway, built to help sell hillside lots. In the same era, its meadows, hay fields, and dairy ranches provided the setting for early silent movie Westerns. Today Bird's Nest Glen is known as the Marin Town and Country Club property, and the city boasts a thriving business district and prosperous residential areas. But it has never lost its rustic charm and hospitality.

On site he discovers that Ross was murdered, the first in a string of four corpses to show up. Victims and suspects have two points in common: they are all connected to a gay guesthouse for wealthy clients where anything is permitted, and most have some connection to Buddhism. Although Brad investigates on his own, his boss at the mysterious agency for which he works feels certain the murderer is implicated in an assassination plot against the Dalai Lama, who is to speak soon in New York's Central Park. The possibility of romance comes with the appearance of a young, blue-haired Buddhist. But Brad will have to learn the meaning of trust and to overcome his irrational bouts of jealousy before there can be any hope of a real connection.

Book American Houses The Architecture of Fairfax Sammons

Download or read book American Houses The Architecture of Fairfax Sammons written by Mary Miers and published by Rizzoli International Publications. This book was released on 2006-11-07 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anne Fairfax and Richard Sammons are at the forefront of a movement among architects today who draw inspiration from the wellspring of the classical traditions in architecture. They have developed a body of work that reflects and adheres to the long-held theories of proportion and order passed down through many past generations of scholarship and practice. The firm's office also served as the headquarters for Henry Hope Reid's Classical America, the only organization offering an alternative to modernist aesthetics until the establishment of the Institute of Classical Architecture in 1992. The twenty-four projects in this volume show the firm's consistent focus on classical architectural beauty, whether the chosen style be Palladian, Tuscan, Mediterranean, Georgian, Adamesque, Neo-classical, British or Dutch Colonial, Colonial Revival, or even East Coast Shingle Style, in all of which Fairfax & Sammons are eminently proficient. The projects selected out of the firm's large body of work include country houses located in Connecticut, New York, Virginia, and Florida, including the renovation of town houses and apartments in New York City—all presented in new color photography.

Download or read book Mantua written by Sue Kovach Shuman and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2021-06-14 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mantua, Virginia, sprouted outside Washington, DC, after World War II because of its convenient location between the Little River Turnpike and US Route 50, roads that made commuting into the nation's capital easy. But Mantua's roots go back to a 1685 Northern Neck of Virginia land grant. Gristmills operated along the Accotink Creek, which still defines the terrain. Civil War major John Henry Chichester's family named Mantua, which stretched south to Glenbrook Road farms, under three miles from the Fairfax Court House, where the first Confederate soldier was killed. The area gradually changed from farms where grain grew and livestock grazed to a wooded suburb with Mid-Century Modern houses. Federal workers and military personnel put down roots, establishing a community. An underground oil spill in 1990 united residents determined to overcome unwanted national attention and continue a small-town America lifestyle in the shadow of the nation's capital.
