Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the Town of Dunstable, Massachusetts: From Its Earliest Settlement to the Year of Our Lord 1873 In the fathers of New England we behold a body of men who, for the liberty of faith alone, resolutely and deliberately exchanged the delights home and the comforts of civilized life for toil and danger, for an ungenial climate and a rugged soil. Gulian C. Verplanck. We have no title-deed to house or lands Owners and occupants of earlier date From graves forgotten stretch their dusty hands, And hold in mortmain still their old estates. H. W. Longfellow. The early English settlements, commenced along the shore of Massachusetts Bay, as that of Plymouth, 1620; of Salem, 1626; of Boston, 1630 and of Newbury, 1633, were gradually extended into the wilderness, then infested with wild beasts, and tribes of wandering savages who justly held themselves to be the rightful owners of the soil. Book Early Generations of the Founders of Old Dunstable Massachusetts

Download or read book Early Generations of the Founders of Old Dunstable Massachusetts written by Ezra S. Stearns and published by . This book was released on 2009-06 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dunstable was originally granted by Massachusetts and was a part of that province until 1741, when a revision of the province line transferred the greater part of the original grant to the jurisdiction of New Hampshire. The early families of this ancient town at the time it was established were living in Nashua, and parts of Hollis, Hudson, Litchfield and Merrimack in New Hampshire and in Dunstable and Tyngsborough in Massachusetts. At the beginning of King William's War (1689-1697), a majority of the families of the settlement, in about 1695, fled from Dunstgable to the older and better fortified towns. In some instances it was a temporary absence, but in some cases the families did not return. This fact accounts for the brevity of the record for several of the families. This work includes references to approximately 2,000 individuals. The principal families addressed in this volume include: Acres, Beale, Blanchard, Cooke, Cromwell, Darbeyshire, French, Galusha, Gould, Harwood, Hassell, Honey, Lovewell, Lund, Marks, Parris, Perry, Read, Robbins, Searles, Smith, Swallow, Taylor, Temple, Tyng, Usher, Waldo, Warner, Weld, and Whiting. Softcover, (1911), repr. 2009, Index, 109 pp.
