Book The American State Normal School

Download or read book The American State Normal School written by C. Ogren and published by Springer. This book was released on 2005-04-30 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The American State Normal School is the first comprehensive history of the state normal schools in the United States. Although nearly two-hundred state colleges and regional universities throughout the U.S. began as 'normal' schools, the institutions themselves have buried their history, and scholars have largely overlooked them. As these institutions later became state colleges and/or regional universities, they distanced themselves from the low status of elementary-literally erasing physical evidence of their normal-school past. In doing so, they buried the rich history of generations of students for whom attending normal school was an enriching, and sometimes life-changing experience. Focusing on these students, the first wave of 'non-traditional' students in higher education, The American State Normal School is a much-needed re-examination of the state normal school. This book was subject of an annual History of Education Society panel for best new books in the field.

Download or read book The Kansas State Normal School Emporia Kansas Vol 5 written by Kansas State Teachers College and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-07 with total page 798 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Kansas State Normal School, Emporia, Kansas, Vol. 5: Year-Book Number, June, 1906 Some facts-for the period covered in this year-book should be mentioned in its introduction to throw light on what follows. The branch normal schools at Hays and Pittsburg, which have been represented more or less in recent year-books, are not included in this. The sugges tion has sometimes been made that since the three schools are controlled by the same Board of Regents and have the same President they might present their printed matter in a joint volume. Force is given to this suggestion by the fact that the branch schools print, as a large part of the outline of their course of study, work prepared for the curriculum of the main school. But even the short course leading to a one-year certificate has differentiated to some extent in the three schools, and the differences in the three year courses leading to the three-year state certificate are still more marked. The main school is able to offer, be cause of the greater number of subjects taught there, a wider range of electives for its three-year course; and, as it does not give graduation with its three-year state certificate. Book The Kansas State Normal School Vol 8

Download or read book The Kansas State Normal School Vol 8 written by and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Kansas State Normal School, Vol. 8: April, 1910; Supplement; Issued by the Latin Department Pupils of high-school age need advice and guidance. In this period of freedom making there can be developed a profound respect for sound and wholesome leadership. Pandering to whimsical and changing desires, licensing in free electives for the purpose of pleasing, or evading hard studies, failing to use native interests as a basis for education, present distressing problems. It is the business of the school to create interest in things worth while even if they are hard and require great effort. The doctrines of total de pravity, innate goodness and inherited mental capacities lead respectively to severity, lawlessness and despair. During the past ten years, Officials of the Santa Fe railway have been warm in their praise of the graduates of the Topeka high school who have found employment with them. They say our young people have been trained to think. The ideals of work developed here are carried over. There is no horrible inefficiency of the high-school graduates. They find their work and their Opportunities for advancement are increased by their training. What the business man wants is not a classroom-trained book keeper merely, but a man who thinks and has a capacity for work and who puts conscience into his work, and we shall not exclude bookkeeping, prop erly taught, from contributing its quota to this training; but we shall in clude just that essentially practical element which Marshall Field in cluded when he was solicitous that his head bookkeeper had studied Greek for the ideal of work which the study of that subject developed and the practice of weighing, considering and contrasting all possible situations in one thing gave reasonable assurance of the same careful work in con ducting this department of the great enterprise of the merchant prince of Chicago. The business man is calling for the man who can think, and he will take care of the methods of his own business. It was a college-trained man who never took a course in commercial lines who was recently em ployed in New York city to revise the system of accounting for some large business firms there. Book Emporia State University

Download or read book Emporia State University written by Steven Hanschu and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2013 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On February 15, 1865, eighteen anxious students gathered on the second floor of a stone building belonging to School District No. 1 of Lyon County to begin their quest for learning at the Kansas State Normal School. It was less than two years after Gov. Thomas Carney signed the bill creating what has become one of the most renowned teacher education universities in the nation. Despite economic setbacks and the loss of the main building to fire in the 1870s, the normal school attracted students from every county within the state. By the end of 1892, the board of regents reported that the Kansas State Normal School was the largest in the nation. In 1923, the school's name was changed to Kansas State Teachers College, recognizing its importance in teacher education. Today, Emporia State University continues to offer outstanding academic programs and an energetic campus environment that has been changing lives since that day in 1865.
