Book History of the Speedway Hoskins

Download or read book History of the Speedway Hoskins written by Ian Hoskins and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Speedway enthusiasts are sure to find this an informative read and even readers who don't know much about this hair-raising sport are in for an entertaining treat. In 1923 Johnnie Hoskins pioneered the hair-raising sport of Speedway in New South Wales, Australia. In those early days this was one of the few businesses one could break into with modest capital. As he discovered, fortunes were made and lost with the trick being to know when to get out of the game. Some fifty years later his services to the sport were officially recognised when he was awarded an MBE. Following in his father's footsteps, Ian Hoskins embarked on a career promoting and creating speedway venues in Scotland, England, Majorca and Zimbabwe. He admits to being broke when he retired from the sport but went on to launch a new career in the entertainment industry. Ian suggests that despite the highs and lows of the sport once the 'cinder bug' bites you are addicted for life.

Book The Golden Age of Speedway

Download or read book The Golden Age of Speedway written by Philip Dalling and published by The History Press. This book was released on 2011-03-09 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The post-war era was British speedway’s golden age. Ten million spectators passed through the turnstiles of a record number of tracks at the sport’s peak. With league gates as high as 80,000, speedway offered a colourful means of escape from the grim austerity of the times.A determinedly clean image, with no betting and rival fans mingling on the terraces, made speedway the family night out of choice. The sport thrived despite punitive taxation and Government threats to close down the speedways as a threat to industrial productivity.A three-division National League stretched from Exeter to Edinburgh and the World Championship Final attracted a capacity audience to Wembley. Test matches against Australia provided yet another international dimension.Even at the height of its popularity, speedway was a sporting edifice built on unstable foundations, which crumbled alarmingly as the 1950s dawned and Britain’s economic and social recovery brought competing attractions like television.

Book Sport Culture and History

Download or read book Sport Culture and History written by Brian Stoddart and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-09-13 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In addition to being an internationally recognised pioneer of sports history, Brian Stoddart has also been a leading thinker and influence in the field. That influence has crossed several areas of history, sociology, business, politics and media aspects of sports studies, and has drawn deeply upon his own training in Asian studies. His work has been characterised by cross-disciplinary work from the outset, and has encompassed some very different geographical areas as well as crossing from academic outlets to media commentary. As a result, his influential work has appeared in many different locations, and it has been difficult for a wide variety of readers to access it fully and easily. This volume draws together, in the one place for the first time, some of his most important academic and journalistic work. Importantly, the pieces are drawn together by an intellectual/autobiographical commentary that locates each piece in a wider social and cultural framework. This book was previously published as a special issue of Sport in Society
