Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1840 edition. Excerpt: ... Note.--There are 31, or 32 Associations in Alabama; several of them, however, are only so partially. If we calculate in a proportional manner, the number baptized last year, in the Associations, whose minutes we have received aince 1838, with those of 1839, we shall have more than 4000 baptized in the last associations! year. And from the many revivals, with which the churches in different parts of the state, have been visited, in the last four or five months, we are satisfied, that we may safely calculate the whole number of Baptists in Alabama, to be 26,000. The New Test party, or as they ignorantly, and arrogantly style themselves, Old School Baptists, are more or less scattered through the most of the Associations in the state; but a number of them are inquiring for truth, and will, no doubt, attain it. At the same time, there are many effort, or missionary brethren, in most, if not in all of their Associations, of which they have nine or ten. We have made as accurate a calculation of their numbers, as we could under existing circumstances, and we estimate their churches at 150, ministers 65, and total number of members 6250. One more remark is necessary. It will be seen by the statistical table, that the Baptist ministers are few when compared with the number of churches; but it should be recollected that a number of Associations never put the names of ministers on their minutes, unless they are delegates; and it is often the case that ministers are not delegated. We shall not probably exceed the real number, if we estimate it at 300, including licentiates. CHAPTER XXXIV. AN ADDRESS TO THE BAPTIST CHURCHES IK ALABAMA. Dearly Beloved in the Lord.--But little more than thirty-one years have elapsed since the organization of the first...

Tull's study and critique of the history and teachings of Landmarkism has established itself as a classic treatment of this important movement. Tull did not finish the revision before he died in 1989, but Morris Ashcraft has now completed that task according to Tull's directions and notes. Ashcraft has also added a helpful preface. With this new edition of Tull's invaluable work on Landmarkism, a new generation of historians, students, and all seeking to understand Baptists have at hand a most helpful teacher: Tull on Landmarkism.

Book excerpt: The Southern Baptist Convention has been torn by internal strife since 1979. This book traces the origins of Southern Baptist theology to its roots in seventeenth-century England, then turns its attention to the backgrounds of two forces which have embroiled the convention in controversy: fundamentalism and neo-orthodoxy. The author identifies the doctrinal stances which divide the two camps and suggests what the future may hold in the light of the dissension.
