Our story includes Francis Makemie, a colonial-era missionary pastor and church planter who gathered with colleagues to form the first Presbytery in 1706. Book excerpt: There are an estimated of 1.3 million Brazilian immigrants living in the United States (approximately 460,000 Brazilian Americans as of mid-2019). The Brazilian population in the United States is relatively small, and the lack of knowledge of Brazilian immigrants and the tendency to stereotype based on the perception and assumption has had a negative impact on many Brazilian ministries. There are only thirteen Brazilian ministries within the Presbyterian Church (USA), and the total number of Brazilians' membership within the PC(USA) is approximately seven hundred people. Some of these ministries have existed for over twenty years, but very little information has been given about their existence and experiences. Brazilian ministries that thrive most in the PC(USA)'s body cherish their own identity, understand what those essential factors and keys are, and embrace the challenges and opportunities in a cross-cultural experience. Every thriving Brazilian ministry is made of people who reflect the image of God in the migration context and plays a unique model to love outcast Brazilians living in this promised land.

Beginning with the work of Stanley Hopper in the late 1960s, and addressing the early scholarship of key theopoetics authors like Rubem Alves and Amos Wilder, this text explores how theopoetics was originally developed as a response to the American death-of-God movement, and has since grown into a method for engaging in theological thought in a way that more fully honors embodiment and aesthetic dimensions of human experience. Most of the extant literature in the field is addressed to allow for a cumulative and comprehensive articulation of the nature and function of theopoetics. The text includes an exploration of how theopoetic insights might aid in the development of tangible church practices, and concludes with a series of theopoetic reflections.

Although the Mission structures were designed to function like scaffolding during the construction of a building, to be removed when the building is complete, the Presbyterian Mission structure in Brazil remained in place for 126 years, long after the Brazilian Presbyterian Church it founded became independent and self-supporting. It was the last of the Presbyterian Missions in the world to be dissolved. The story told here documents the contributions made by North American Presbyterians in Brazil and tackles the missiological question of just why it remained in place so long, and whether it should have.
