Book excerpt: As a port city, Dublin owes much to the labourers who strove against the heavy-duty tide of imports and exports; a league of thousands who were hired on a day-to-day basis for generations, defining the bustle of Dublin city centre – a cornerstone of the urban industrial working class in Ireland. The Dublin Docker is a sumptuously illustrated history that determines the dockers’ and stevedores’ importance as an industrial subculture within the Dublin that they navigated. The authors excavated the archive of the Dublin Dockworkers Preservation Society to discover a wealth of photographs, spanning the mid-nineteenth century to the 1970s, that capture the dockers’ arduous labour and the energy of Dublin port. These evocative images bring this beautifully designed social history to life, complementing the inimitable voices revealed in interviews with the dockers themselves. How they negotiated working hours and pay, the changes that came with epochal events – the Dublin Lockout, the First World War, the Easter Rising and War of Independence – and the innumerable myths and ‘dark stories’ that shrouded their image: The Dublin Docker is a history of the dockers and their deep-woven connection to the city.

Book Dublin Docklands Reinvented

Download or read book Dublin Docklands Reinvented written by Niamh Moore and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the last twenty years, the redevelopment of the docklands has radically altered the physical fabric and social structure of a large part of Dublin City both north and south of the river. What has happened in the city is not entirely unique and has many international parallels in places like New York, London and Sydney. This book sets out to examine how global urban influences have interacted with local processes to transform a former marginal part of Dublin city into an economically successful and vibrant urban quarter. It offers an up-to-date and detailed account of the changes that have taken place and highlights some of the difficulties encountered by a number of agencies along the way, including the controversy over the redevelopment of Spencer Dock, the problems of contamination at the Grand Canal Dock and the future challenges of regenerating the Poolbeg Peninsula. The book places significant emphasis on the politics of redevelopment and the role of particular individuals in re-shaping this urban district.

Book excerpt: As a port city, Dublin owes much to the labourers who strove against the heavy-duty tide of imports and exports; a league of thousands who were hired on a day-to-day basis for generations, defining both the landscape and activity in Dublin's city center and the urban industrial working-class in Ireland. These were the dockers and stevedores of Dublin Port, and this is their history, brought to life through this sumptuously illustrated, social history that defines their importance as an industrial subculture within the Dublin they navigated. Beautifully designed and illustrated throughout, the authors mined the archive of the Dublin Dockworkers Preservation Society to discover a wealth of photographs that capture the dockers arduous labour, spanning the mid-nineteenth century to the 1970s. How they negotiated daily hours and pay, the changes that came with epochal events-the Dublin Lockout, the First World War, the Easter Rising and War of Independence-and the innumerable myths and "dark stories" that shrouded their image, are all revealed in The Dublin Docker, beautifully presented by distinguished historians, Aileen O'Carroll and Don Bennett. Book Dublin Port Chief Engineers

Download or read book Dublin Port Chief Engineers written by Ronald Cox and published by . This book was released on 2023-12-30 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The second half of the nineteenth century and the early years of the following century witnessed a great expansion in world trade and demands by shipping companies for secure deep-water berthage in the major ports that could no longer be ignored. Drawing from the Dublin Port Archive, Dr Ronald Cox explores the lives and great contributions of two of Dublin Port's Chief Engineers, Bindon Blood Stoney and John Purser Griffith, who made Dublin Port the national asset that it is today. Documenting their roles at the forefront of Irish Engineering, Cox reflects on their impact on the construction and history of the port itself; From the revolutionary Diving Bell that allowed the construction of the bridges and quay walls to the reconstruction of the north and south quays and modern dredging operations. As Chief Port Engineer, Bindon Blood Stoney paved the way for the acceleration of engineering work, leading to the creation of a modern deep-water port to serve an expanding economy. He was heavily involved in directing all the engineering work in the port, including the rebuilding of two of the major bridges spanning the river Liffey. John Purser Griffith served as assistant engineer to Bindon Blood Stoney at Dublin Port, before taking over as Engineer-in-Chief in 1898. During his time at the port, Purser Griffith was responsible for the introduction of an extensive system of dredging and land reclamation, and the electrification of the port. During the course of a long career in the port and as an independent consulting engineer, he made a major contribution to the engineering profession and to the development of the Irish nation.

Book excerpt: During the second phase of construction of the new Civic Offices, Dublin, in the early 1990s, an archaeological excavation of the proposed car park area was undertaken by Dr Andrew Halpin, on behalf of Dublin Corporation. The excavation revealed evidence for remains of wooden revetments, dating to the latter part of the 12th century, and also the remains of a substantial masonry structure. Historical research indicates that the stone building may be the remains of the 13th-century Tholsel or Guildhall, indicating continuity of function on this site. Dublin Corporation was delighted to be able to fund this project from its inception to its completion in published form.
