Book A History of the Plymouth Brethren Classic Reprint

Download or read book A History of the Plymouth Brethren Classic Reprint written by William Blair Neatby and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-18 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the Plymouth Brethren It will be seen that I have been very sparing of references to my authorities. This has been partly due to a belief that my readers will in most cases share my dislike to a text encumbered with notes; but partly also to the peculiarities of the special case. The great majority of the authorities are now inaccessible to most readers. I have consulted scores of tracts that very few people could possibly procure. Besides those in my own pos session, or in possession of my relatives, very many have come under my inspection through the cour tesy of friends with whom my articles had brought me into correspondence. To one correspondent, whose connexion with the Brethren dates back to 1845, I am under obligations that I find it quite impossible to adequately acknowledge. Not only has he placed at my disposal a set of tracts that is, I should suppose, almost unrivalled for the period 1845-70, but he has taken the greatest pains to clear up, by the help of private correspondence, various obscurities that I have submitted to him. For the later period, my own resources have been very ample. Instead of constant references, I have furnished at the end of the book a sufficient bibliography, chronologically classified. In one or two instances only, I have mentioned books that I have not succeeded in consulting. On the other hand, I have omitted very many that I have not found of much service, and on the sole authority of which I have stated nothing. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History and Teaching of the Plymouth Brethren Of the day of some portion of her inherit ance of truth which has been forgotten for a season, but for the revival of which the circumstances of the time are imperatively calling; while on the other hand the special character of any false teaching which may accompany such movements demands the attentive and dispassionate examination of all who desire to see their way through the perplexities of their time, and to secure the religious interests of their country. All these considerations apply in full force to the re markable movement with which we are now concerned. Its rapid growth, its wide-spread influence, its tenacious hold on those who join it, all go to Show that it is felt by many both in this and foreign countries to furnish some kind of supply to the religious necessities of the age. An examination of it then may help us to see what these necessities are, and Should lead Churchmen to enquire further whether the Church herself out of the abundant stores committed to her keeping is not fully able to supply them. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Antinomianism Revived: Or the Theology of the So-Called Plymouth Brethren Examined and Refuted The arguments of this book are directed, mainly, against the doctrines inculcated by the so-called Plymouth Brethren. We Shall attempt little more, in this introduction which we are asked to write, than to answer the question, Who are the Plymouth Brethren? They are a sect (if it be proper to call those a sect who repudiate all sects) popularly known as Darbyites, Brethren, Plymouth Breth ren, etc. They originated in England nearly sixty years ago, under the leadership of Mr. John Darby. Mr. Darby was born in England, of wealthy parents. He was educated for the law, and commenced its practice. But his subsequent conversion changed his whole course of life. Book History of the Church of the Brethren of the Western District of Pennsylvania Classic Reprint

Download or read book History of the Church of the Brethren of the Western District of Pennsylvania Classic Reprint written by Jerome E. Blough and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 604 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Church of the Brethren of the Western District of Pennsylvania The title of this book does not hint at the extent of interest that will center in it. Herein is a well-prepared account of the rise and development of the congregations of the Church of the Brethren of Western Pennsylvania; but interwoven in it is an inevitable thread whose strands reach almost Brotherhood-wide. In Western Pennsylvania the Brethren labored long and well in behalf of the Master. Through many hardships in earlier days they established the faith in the midst of the beautiful Alleghanies. No service has ever been rendered more cheerfully and hopefully than theirs. But the valleys were too narrow for all their children and scattered throughout the West in almost even State one finds "Somerset County stock" prosperous and flourishing. All these scattered descendants will be interested in the story of beginnings in the old home District; and thus the usefulness of the book grows and grows until who can forecast where its presence will not be felt? The author is well fitted to write the book. Born and reared in one of the stronger congregations of the District, breathing fully the spirit of his environment, in full sympathy with the ideals of the people who have built up the organization, he could fully enter into a proper appreciation of all the data gathered and give due stress to salient facts.
